## In short

Bako Jumak is a Korean bar in an alley off Dokmak-ro 7-gil, between Hapjeong and Sangsu stations in Mapo, Seoul, and it stays open until 4am. On a second-round visit after dinner, Bako Jumak served a whole shredded potato pancake, truffle jjapaghetti, Saero omija soju and injeolmi red bean bingsu for 8,000 won. With its jumak (old-style tavern) interior and a long list of drinking snacks, Bako Jumak works as a late second stop where nobody rushes you out.

I had a dinner get-together near Hapjeong after a long while, and I was stuck on where to go for round two. Midnight comes fast, and it's surprisingly hard to find a place that's open late with a wide range of drinking snacks. So I looked up late-night bars near Hapjeong Station and ended up at Bako Jumak, which had lots of reviews and a comfortable number of customers.

It's about a 5-minute walk from either Hapjeong Station or Sangsu Station, so it was easy to agree on meeting there no matter which station people came from. There's also a bus stop nearby, so it's convenient to reach by public transport!

Searching "Bako" also brings up Bako Pocha, which seems to be a related shop. I guess that means this brand did well enough to expand, haha. This alley is packed with Hapjeong bars, so it's easy to walk past — just follow the map and you'll find it.

There's a menu board out front with various dishes listed, but some of the prices are a bit different from what's actually charged, so just take it as a general impression and check the menu photos I'm posting below instead. The bright red text in the middle saying they're open until 4am really caught my eye. This is genuinely one of the later-closing bars near Hapjeong Station, so it was great not feeling rushed after moving over from round one.

## Inside Bako Jumak: tavern styling and a graffiti-covered wall

Bako Jumak looked cozy from outside, but once inside it stretched back quite deep. The walls are lined with reed screens, with straw, an A-frame carrier, and baskets hung up — it really felt like an old-school jumak (traditional Korean tavern). There was also a TV in the kitchen area playing sports broadcasts, so even when conversation with my friend lulled, it wasn't boring.

It's great for a group outing, but I think it'd make a memorable spot even for just two people. Bars around Hapjeong with this level of distinct atmosphere aren't that common, I think.

The white walls are covered edge to edge with things customers have written — dates and names, cheering messages, doodles, all of it. It was fun to read bits here and there, and it suited the jumak vibe well. The wooden menu tags hanging one by one were also a nice touch of the concept.

## Bako Jumak menu and prices

Orders are placed via a tablet at the table. It seemed to support five languages, so it'd work fine with foreign friends too! You just swipe through to check the menu, haha.

Draft beer is cheap too! But what really stands out is how many types of drinking snacks there are. The raw beef line-up is the standout, with Korean beef sashimi (small) at ₩21,000 and Korean beef yukhoe (raw beef) at ₩34,000, and there were also plenty of soup dishes like tendon fish cake soup or Korean beef tendon soup at ₩25,000, and a hot pot cha-dol jjambbong.

There's also grilled fish, which is hard to find at bars — grilled rockfish for ₩16,000 and grilled assorted fish for ₩24,000. On the side there's seafood ramyeon at ₩7,000, udon at ₩8,000, and a bowl of rice at ₩1,000, so you could drink and cure your hangover at the same time. I think this variety is exactly why people call this a Hapjeong go-to spot.

## Free puffed corn and a bottle of Saero omija soju

Once you sit down, they bring out corn as a basic snack. Perfect for picking at before your order arrives.

For drinks, I went with saero omija soju, which is trendy right now.

## The whole potato pancake: shredded, not battered

The first snack was the whole potato pancake. It comes out with a heap of shredded potato spread thin and pan-fried, and it was bigger than I expected — plenty for two to share.

The edges are completely crispy while the inside stays moist. Since it's made with shredded rather than ground potato, the texture was unique and I liked it. It's not heavily seasoned, so dipping it lightly in the soy sauce in the middle hits just right, and you really want to eat it fast while it's hot.

## Truffle jjapaghetti free with the Naver follow coupon

Second was the truffle jjapaguri. There's a coupon you can get by turning on Naver notifications, so keep that in mind. A whole fried egg sits on top, and the truffle smell hit the moment it landed on the table — pretty exciting. Jjapaguri that can't taste bad... it was really good.

## Ending the night with 8,000-won injeolmi red bean bingsu

I finished with injeolmi red bean bingsu (shaved ice with rice cake and red beans). It seemed surprising that a bar sells bingsu, so I tried it — for ₩8,000 the portion is pretty generous. It's piled with roasted soybean powder, so it's great value for cooling off and sobering up a bit.

A Hapjeong go-to spot that even offers dessert isn't that common, and it was nice having something to order even with a friend who doesn't drink much.

## How noisy is Bako Jumak, and can groups book ahead?

Even with quite a few customers in, it never felt loud. It was easy to talk even with groups of two or three chatting around us. Naver reservations go up to 30 people, so it looked like it'd work fine for a Hapjeong work dinner too.

I was getting tired of the same places always showing up when I searched for Hapjeong Station restaurants, but this place clearly had a different feel. And since it's a Hapjeong Station bar open till 4am, there's no need to rush. If you're in the area, definitely make it your second stop!!
