Today I headed out toward Eonyang with Kongtteok (my baby) and ended up at a pretty special large café in Ulsan. I went in expecting just a big bakery café, but once I actually arrived, there was a gallery you could browse before even entering the café, and mountains and forest spread out beyond the building — it felt less like a café and more like a whole cultural complex. This is 'MUG (카페 먹)', located in Eonyang!

## What does MUG, the large Eonyang café in the forest, look like?

MUG is a large café on Hyangsandagae-ro in Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan. It's built on the site of a past major forest fire, using charred wood that survived the flames as its design motif — apparently that's why the exterior felt so different in mood from an ordinary café.

The black building, the quiet water feature, and the mountain visible behind it all came together for a pretty striking first impression. The building's overwhelming ceiling height combined with the surrounding nature also made it a great photo spot!

When I visited, the sign said hours were 10:00–20:00, and the outdoor area was being run as a kids' care zone. Pets aren't allowed, so keep that in mind!!

Something surprisingly nice about MUG! Walking through the entrance doesn't take you straight into the café — you first pass through a gallery space with artwork on display. We slowly looked at the pieces while I carried Kongtteok.

Apparently the indoor exhibition space also runs shows featuring up-and-coming artists. It's not just a place to grab coffee and leave — you can browse art and enjoy nature too, which definitely made it feel different from a typical large café.

## How spacious is MUG's ground floor?

Passing through the gallery into the café, I was surprised again — this time by the scale!! It's a single-floor space that spreads out wide, and with the high ceilings it felt even bigger than its actual footprint. The seats weren't cramped, and the floor-to-ceiling windows let you see the surrounding scenery, which gave a nice sense of openness.

Further inside, there were seats where you could just look out at the outdoor scenery. Maybe because the weather was nice, but just sitting there facing the window felt genuinely relaxing 🌿

## Weekday 4pm at MUG: is any bread left?

I'd heard MUG had a wide variety of bakery items, so I went in with high hopes... but we arrived around 4pm on a weekday. And by then, most of the bakery items were already sold out ㅠㅠ

Looking at the display case, I was like, "Wait, it's a weekday and it's already this empty...?" haha. If you want to see the full range of bread, it's probably better to visit a bit earlier than late afternoon like we did. I'd also been curious about their signature fruit cream cheese cinnamon roll, but I didn't get to try it that day — a bit disappointing. FYI, on weekends and holidays they do a limited tiramisu cinnamon roll, so keep that in mind if you're visiting on a weekend!

## MUG black latte and Lamington cake: how they taste

After some deliberation, we ordered an iced americano, a MUG black latte, and a Lamington cake. The MUG black latte was seriously pitch black just like the café's name, haha — it definitely had that signature-menu feel.

And honestly, the thing I had zero expectations for but ended up loving the most that day was... the Lamington cake.

I picked it at first just because it looked cute, but the outside was generously coated in coconut, and inside was sweet strawberry jam — eating it all together was genuinely delicious.

Soft cake, the texture of coconut, and bursts of sweet-tart strawberry jam in between — totally my type...! I'd chosen it without much expectation and ended up thinking "wait, this is actually really good?" and kept eating it! If I go back, I think I'll order the Lamington cake again.

## Visiting MUG with a baby: high chairs and changing station

Since we visited with Kongtteok, I can't skip the baby-friendly info 👶🏻 There were high chairs available inside, so Kongtteok could sit comfortably. The space itself was spacious, so it didn't feel cramped even with a baby. Best of all, there was a separate diaper-changing station! Not a makeshift setup crammed inside the bathroom, but a properly separate space — as someone out with a baby, that was a really welcome touch.

## Forest, café and exhibition in one stop at MUG

I originally went for coffee and dessert, but after actually walking around, MUG turned out to be a place where exploring the space itself was half the fun.

From the distinctive charred-wood-motif architecture to the forest-blended scenery, the indoor gallery, and the spacious café — I could take my time enjoying all of it in one place. Seeing how much of the bakery was already gone on a weekday afternoon, I'd like to come back a bit earlier next time and try the other breads too :D
