I had some errands near Seongseo Keimyung, so I stopped by Hyangtaek Seongseo Keimyung University Branch for lunch. This place looks like it hasn't been open long, but I'd already heard there was a wait, so we went straight for an opening rush at 11am. It's located near the main gate of Keimyung University in Seongseo, close to Seongseo Dongsan Hospital across the street, so it wasn't hard to find and access was pretty convenient.

Outside, the big Hyangtaek sign is easy to spot, and there were even chairs set up for waiting on one side. Inside, it was cleaner and brighter than I expected. The wood-tone tables and chairs gave it an uncluttered, tidy feel, so it came across as quite neat for a Korean restaurant. There were plenty of tables too, and by the time we were eating,

## Nearly full by 11:40am: how long is the wait at Hyangtaek?

By around 11:40am, the place was already nearly full! Customers ranged from people in their 20s to 40s and 50s, so despite being right by Keimyung, it's not just a spot for college students. The floor-to-ceiling windows meant it didn't feel cramped at all, since you could see outside. We got in right away from the opening rush, but seeing the people waiting when we left, I was glad we came early, haha.

## What we ordered: two rice bowls and a galbi platter

What we ordered was

- Eggplant doenjang rice bowl
- Wild herb and squid rice bowl

That's what we ordered. The menu is refreshingly simple, as you'd expect from a good spot.

The rice bowls came out first,

and a little while later the galbi platter and mushroom platter arrived,

and once the whole table was set, it looked more generous than I expected.

### How is the eggplant doenjang rice bowl at Hyangtaek?

The eggplant doenjang (soybean paste) rice bowl was one of the dishes I was most curious about. At first I wondered how eggplant and doenjang would work together, but once I tried it, the eggplant was really soft and the doenjang seasoning blended nicely with the rice. It leaned more mild and comforting than intense, so eating it felt like a "healthy meal," and it was easy on the stomach too.

In particular, wrapping a little of the salted fish topping in the basic side-dish gim (seaweed sheets) and eating it together with the eggplant doenjang rice was surprisingly delicious.

### The wild herb and squid rice bowl is the spicy one

The wild herb (chamnamul) and squid rice bowl had a different appeal from the eggplant doenjang one. The squid had a nice charred aroma with a touch of spice added, which really woke up the appetite!!! The chewy squid and fragrant wild herbs went well together, and I just kept eating more rice with it. The spiciness kind of pulls you in... switching back and forth between the two bowls made both taste even better.

### Galbi platter and the free review-event mushroom platter

And then the galbi platter I'd been looking forward to!! There was a subtle charred aroma and the juices burst out — genuinely delicious. It paired well eaten together with the rice bowls, and it was also great just eaten on its own. Meat lovers would be satisfied with this one.

The mushroom platter we got from the review event also came out grilled nice and crispy, with a great texture, and it went even better eaten alongside the meat.

## Worth it for a Korean meal near Keimyung University in Seongseo?

Overall, the food felt clean and well put together, and I cleared everything down to the last bite ☺️. It's a great place to visit when you're craving a hearty Korean meal near Seongseo Keimyung.

From clean rice bowls to meat dishes, there's enough variety here to work for solo diners and family meals alike. Having eaten here myself, I get why there's a wait. Next time, I'd like to try the other rice bowl options too ☺️.
