## In short

Sanbang Sochan in Jangsu Sanghoe Jeju Sagye-ri Branch is a Korean restaurant in Seogwipo, Jeju, serving beef tangerine naengmyeon and abalone porridge. I enjoyed the tangerine tea–beef broth, rich abalone porridge with its special topping, and dumplings. Verdict: a memorable Jeju meal balancing bright citrus and savory richness.

## Tangerine naengmyeon and abalone porridge in Sagye-ri

I visited Sanbang Sochan in Jangsu Sanghoe Jeju Sagye-ri Branch (산방소찬in장수상회 제주사계리점), a special spot near Sagye-ri in Jeju. When traveling, I always end up seeking out food that captures the character of the area. I heard there was a place serving unusual yet carefully made dishes, so off I went right away.

As you drive along while taking in Jeju’s beautiful scenery, a distinctive building starts to stand out even from afar. With such an open view of the surrounding roads, it was really easy to find. Up close, the exterior is modern, yet it suits the landscape and has a cozy, atmospheric feel.

There is no dedicated parking lot, so you can park along the road beside the restaurant.

## A cozy interior with a mother-of-pearl cabinet and bar seating

Warm lighting welcomed me into a compact but cozy space. It is not huge, but the seating is thoughtfully arranged, from bar seats to tables for larger groups, so it looked comfortable whether you are dining alone or with company. The antique mother-of-pearl cabinet on one side especially caught my eye. A neatly arranged self-service station and cute little ornaments on top added to the restaurant’s distinctive retro mood.

Doesn’t the view outside from inside the restaurant look just like a painting? 😄

As I looked around, I noticed they had also carefully prepared a high chair in one corner. Such a thoughtful touch for families visiting with children.^^

I settled in at a neat table with an antique charm. The tidily set table held a stylish, pretty menu. 👍 We ordered the beef tangerine naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles), a large bowl of abalone porridge, and dumplings on the side—a wonderfully generous spread, haha.

Before long, everything we ordered filled the table. From the abalone porridge with its savory innard hue, to the tangerine naengmyeon neatly topped with garnishes and sliced boiled beef, to the steaming dumplings, it all looked mouthwatering from the start. Don’t the antique mother-of-pearl pattern on the table and the neat side dishes make the whole spread look even more appealing? 😄

## What does the beef tangerine naengmyeon taste like?

This was the signature dish I had been looking forward to most: beef tangerine naengmyeon. The broth blends tangerine-peel tea with a deep beef stock, and from the first spoonful, the savory beef flavor and gentle citrus tang spread across my mouth so beautifully. It has the mild yet deep savoriness of Pyongyang naengmyeon, with a distinctly Jeju-like freshness added for a clean finish.

## Rich abalone porridge mixed with special abalone sotdae

Next came the abalone porridge, a dish with especially deep flavor. Made with plenty of rich abalone innards, it felt like a nourishing meal with a full, intense taste. The special abalone sotdae—a butter-and-soy-sauce-braised abalone topping—was mixed in with sesame oil, and its savory richness and umami were so good that I scraped the bowl clean. It truly tasted like a Sagye-ri favorite.

### Meat dumplings and kimchi dumplings, too

These were the meat dumplings and kimchi dumplings we ordered as sides. They arrived fresh from the steamer with steam still rising, and the thin wrappers were packed generously with filling, making the texture especially appealing. Both the mild meat dumplings and the spicy-tangy kimchi dumplings became even more flavorful dipped in soy sauce, and they paired wonderfully with the mains.

The basic side dishes served alongside the meal also arrived neatly presented in earthenware bowls. The cool, crunchy kimchi was lovely, but the seasoned garlic salad, pungent and pleasantly spicy, was especially memorable. Paired with the boiled beef or noodles, it was the perfect finishing touch to wake up my appetite. 👍

The cool broth, crisp pickled radish, and tender sliced boiled beef gave every bite such varied textures. Best of all was wrapping a big piece of beef in the buckwheat noodles, then topping it with pungent garlic salad or kimchi for one huge bite. Thanks to the subtle tangerine fragrance, it stayed clean and never heavy through the last bite.

This abalone porridge is packed with savory abalone innards, giving it a weighty, deep flavor. Mix the special sotdae, braised with butter and soy sauce, thoroughly into the porridge and the nuttiness and umami are doubled. Adding a bite of spicy garlic salad or kimchi on top of the long-simmered porridge cut through any richness perfectly. What a combination. 👍

These were the dumplings we ordered on the side. The meat dumplings were mild and moist, with juicy filling, while the kimchi dumplings were spicy and peppery for a cheerful contrast. Their wrappers were thin and the filling generous, so the bite was completely irresistible.

## A Jeju sea photo spot in front of the restaurant

This is the photo spot in front of the restaurant. The blue Jeju sea and sky stretch out beyond the frame, making it a perfect place for a lovely proof shot. It is a thoughtful little photo spot to capture a memory during a Yongmeori Coast food tour, haha.

What I remember most from this visit was the fantastic pairing of cool tangerine naengmyeon with its subtle citrus aroma and rich abalone porridge with savory special sotdae. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who wants a distinctive, satisfying meal while touring nearby sights such as Sanbangsan or Yongmeori Coast. If I come back to Jeju, I definitely want to return and try the other signature dishes, too.

The beef tangerine naengmyeon and abalone porridge I had at Sanbang Sochan in Jangsu Sanghoe Jeju Sagye-ri Branch, along with the generously filled meat and kimchi dumplings, made for an even more satisfying meal than I expected. The pretty interior and retro mother-of-pearl tables also made it great for photos and gave the meal an extra-special feel. 👍 If you are looking for a carefully prepared restaurant with a lovely atmosphere near Sanbangsan or Sagye-ri, I really recommend stopping by at least once.
