## Handmade Oranda at Jeju Dongmun Market

When you travel around Jeju, there is one place you are almost certain to visit at least once: Jeju Dongmun Market. It is one of the island's largest traditional markets, with so much to browse—from seafood and fruit to Jeju specialties and ready-to-eat treats. Ellane also stopped by Dongmun Market during a Jeju trip and wandered through it slowly. Then, while looking at the food, one shop made me stop in my tracks: Cheongchuni Oranda.

I already like oranda, a Korean puffed-rice snack bound with grain syrup, so I could hardly walk past it haha. But this shop was a little different from the old-fashioned oranda we tend to picture—hard and sticky on the teeth. There were so many kinds to look at, from oranda made with Jeju ingredients to gwajeul and doughnut-shaped oranda.

Best of all, you can sample before choosing. If you are looking for an easy snack during a Jeju trip as well as souvenirs for family or friends, it is a nice place to browse.

## Cheongchuni Oranda Location and Dongmun Market Parking

Cheongchuni Oranda is on the first floor at 6-8 Dongmun-ro, Jeju-si, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, South Korea, tucked inside Jeju Dongmun Market. The market has several entrances, so it can feel a little confusing on a first visit. Browse as you go; from the seafood market side, head farther inside toward the cluster of souvenir and traditional-snack shops.

Dongmun Market is popular with tourists, so it is easier to think about parking before driving over. There are public parking lots and shared parking facilities for market visitors. If you plan to see the whole market, using a nearby public lot and exploring on foot is convenient. Parking can be busy depending on the time, though, so allow extra time on weekends and at peak tourist hours.

Dongmun Market itself is open year-round, with typical hours of 07:00–21:00, though individual shops inside may keep slightly different hours.

Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch is open daily from 9 AM to 8 PM. It is a good time window for browsing the market in the morning and picking up snacks or gifts, too.

## What Flavors and Prices Do Square Oranda Have?

Now, shall we properly look through the menu? Cheongchuni Oranda has square oranda, gwajeul and yuzu gwajeul, doughnut oranda, bulk oranda, and gift sets. There were honestly more varieties than I expected, so I spent quite a while looking haha. The products made with distinctly Jeju ingredients especially caught my eye, and being able to taste them first made it easy to choose according to my preferences.

Cheongchuni Oranda's handmade oranda came in five flavors, each incorporating ingredients you can find in Jeju. Square yuzu, nut, and garlic oranda cost ₩3,500 each, while gamtae seaweed and Udo peanut oranda cost ₩4,000 each; three were ₩10,000.

However, that ₩10,000 deal applies to only two gamtae or Udo peanut pieces; three made with gamtae or Udo peanut were listed at ₩11,000. From the bright tang of yuzu and tangerine chips to the nutty, lightly pungent garlic, savory gamtae, mixed nuts, and rich Udo peanuts, the added ingredient changed the flavor quite a bit. It was fun choosing among them.

## Doughnut Oranda and Gwajeul Menu

The flavors are hallabong, green tea, peanut, carrot chocolate, strawberry, cookies and cream, black sesame, yellow cheese, chocolate, and coconut. The doughnut-shaped oranda are colorful and topped with all sorts of things, so they feel more like a modern dessert than a traditional snack.

I thought these would be fun for children to pick out and for younger visitors to buy as a Jeju travel keepsake, too. A set would be nice for gifting :) Every flavor is different, so choosing and eating them to your taste would be fun.

A pack of 10 costs ₩12,000. The gwajeul I tried was not hard at all; it was crisp and easy to eat.

There was yuzu gwajeul next to it, too! Looking closely, gwajeul was not just one thing. It was divided into four kinds of ppeongtwigi (puffed grain): buckwheat, brown rice, steamed rice, and white rice, so you can choose according to the grain you like.

Buckwheat becomes deeply nutty as you chew, brown rice pairs a gentle yuzu aroma with nuttiness, steamed rice has a savory crispness, and white rice is the mildest, most familiar flavor—something anyone could enjoy comfortably.

Individually wrapped pieces look neater for the recipient than bringing back one bag, and they are easier to take out and eat one by one. ## Trying Gwajeul and Oranda at Home

This time, Ellane mostly chose things to eat at home, but next time I am in Jeju, I would like to pick up gifts as well haha. They sell online, too, which is a quietly nice touch: after buying something in Jeju and loving it, you can order it again.

After walking around Dongmun Market, these were the three things that eventually ended up in my hands.

Ten gwajeul for ₩12,000, three square oranda for ₩10,000, and one orange doughnut oranda for ₩3,500 came to ₩25,500 altogether! Each variety had slightly different colors and textures, so they looked quite pretty arranged together on a plate. The crisp, mild gwajeul came 10 to a bag, making it nice to keep around as a snack.

### Gwajeul That Wasn't Hard

I brought them home and tried them one by one. I started with the gwajeul. To be honest, when I think of gwajeul, I imagine something a little hard and firm. But when I actually ate it, it was not hard at all—much more than I expected.

The rice grains on the outside were crispy, while the inside broke apart lightly rather than feeling overly hardened. Best of all, it was not the kind of snack where sweetness rushes at you. It was mild with a gentle sweetness, so I kept reaching for another.

I made a cup of coffee and picked one up, thinking, “I'll only have one,” but I kept reaching for more haha. With 10 pieces in a bag for ₩12,000, it was fine for several people to share. I was told it keeps at room temperature for about two weeks, so there was less pressure to finish it right away while traveling. I will buy it again next time.

There are plenty of oranda varieties, so it is fun to choose according to your taste. Ellane picked three square oranda for ₩10,000 this time, and I liked being able to try a little of several flavors.

### Crisp Yet Soft Square Oranda

Because of memories of eating oranda as a child, you naturally think first of something hard that sticks to your teeth. But Cheongchuni Oranda's oranda definitely had a different texture. It was crisp but not hard, with a slight softness as you chewed. The grain syrup did not feel overly set, and the puffed rice was held together just enough, so it was not excessively firm when you bit into it. Once I tried it, I understood why they encourage you to sample before choosing.

The round doughnut oranda felt different again from regular oranda, and its pretty color caught my eye. I did not expect much at the end, but the fresh orange note added to the crisp, doughnut-shaped oranda made it feel a little lighter than regular oranda.

It was sweet without a heavy finish, and it went really well with coffee.

So, honestly?! It tasted better than expected haha. I think I will buy it again next time I visit Jeju Dongmun Market haha. Eating it at home, I really liked that the oranda itself was not too hard and chewed crisp yet soft. It was not easy to stop at just one haha.

## For Jeju Travel Snacks and Gifts

Oranda can reportedly be kept at room temperature for about a month, so it seemed good both as a snack to eat right away in Jeju and as a gift to share after the trip. I especially liked being able to see and choose from so many flavors. You can pick what suits your taste and eat one at a time at your accommodation, while the neatly packaged items also make good Jeju travel gifts. After browsing the market and souvenirs, taking home one of these traditional snacks feels like a small, sweet ending to a Jeju trip ♡
