# Gyeongju dessert shop chocolate pie with milk: Gyeongju Tokyo Pie

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is a Japanese-style handmade pie shop on Poseok-ro 1095beon-gil in Hwangnidan-gil, Gyeongju, and it's takeout only — no seating in the store. It's open weekdays 11:30–19:00 and weekends 11:30–20:00, closed every Tuesday.

I stopped by Gyeongju Tokyo Pie while wandering Hwangnidan-gil, looking for a quick snack and something to take home as a gift. It's right in Hwangnidan-gil so it was easy to pop into while sightseeing. This place is a Japanese-style handmade pie shop actually run by a Japanese baker, and apparently the first in Korea to sell pie with a whole apple baked inside.

They only bake twice a day and sell same-day, made-that-day pies, so if you want to try them fresh out of the oven, it's worth timing your visit around the bake schedule.

I happened to arrive right when the second batch came out, so I got to see them piping hot and fresh. As soon as I walked in, the smell of freshly baked bread hit me — honestly impossible to just walk past 🥹

## Menu lineup and in-store event

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie sells three kinds: the signature apple pie, a red bean pie filled with sweet red bean, and a chocolate pie. Each can be bought individually or as a set, and they looked like a good option for a Hwangnidan-gil souvenir.

## Apple, red bean, and chocolate pie: how they compare

I started with the signature apple pie. Unlike typical apple pies with finely chopped apple, Gyeongju Tokyo Pie's apple pie keeps the apple whole. It's made with natural butter and 100% domestic ripened apples to bring out the apple's own natural sweetness, they say — the outside is as crisp as pastry, and inside the whole apple gives a bite that's sweet with a slight tang. The buttery, flaky crust paired so well with the apple's sweetness that this was personally my favorite !!🍎

Next was the Tokyo red bean pie! Filled with domestic sweet red bean paste, it was less sweet than I expected, with a nutty, mild sweetness. The red bean paste's usual heavy sweetness wasn't overpowering, so it seemed like something even adults who aren't big on sweet desserts could enjoy without hesitation.

Third was the Tokyo chocolate pie. It's made with European chocolate, and eating it, I got a bit of a pain au chocolat vibe. It went really well with milk 🤍🤍🤍. With sweet chocolate inside a crisp crust, this felt like something kids especially would love. All three had such distinct flavors that I was glad I went with the gift set!

## When is the best time to visit Gyeongju Tokyo Pie?

Since Gyeongju Tokyo Pie only bakes at set times, if you want to try them fresh, time your visit around 11:30 or 2:30. It's a good spot to grab one when you get hungry wandering Hwangnidan-gil, and also a solid choice when you're looking for a Hwangnidan-gil dessert or gift to take home after your trip.

If you're traveling in Gyeongju and looking for a slightly special Hwangnidan-gil dessert, it's worth picking from the whole-apple signature pie, the red bean, or the chocolate depending on your taste :)
