Today, I headed to Dongmyeong-dong with my younger siblings—the hot spot for Gwangju’s young crowd!! When you think of Dongmyeong-dong in Gwangju, well... it is packed with hot places, from great restaurants to cafés and bars, right?! And once evening comes... handsome guys and beautiful ladies are everywhere in Gwangju. Hahahahahaha. The place we visited with my siblings today was Ju Myeongdang, a Dongmyeong-dong favorite that completely hit my taste from the atmosphere onward.

## What are Ju Myeongdang’s exterior and interior like?

Ju Myeongdang is on the second floor. Its bright sign was visible even from afar, so the exterior immediately caught my eye. Rather than feeling like a typical Korean restaurant, it had the vibe of an atmospheric Korean bar that fits today’s Dongmyeong-dong perfectly?!

Seeing even this kind of atmospheric phrase... Hwan Sang, who is weak for this sort of vibe, was already sold before walking in. Hahahahahaha.

Once inside, it was even prettier than it had looked from outside. The brick and wood-toned interior was paired with soft lighting,

and the ceiling blended lush green plants with warm lights, making the mood incredibly cozy and atmospheric. Hwan Sang loves this kind of atmosphere, you know?! Totally my taste!!

The artwork on the walls was also very distinctive and full of personality, so it felt less like a bar and more like visiting a beautifully atmospheric space.

## Is it good for a quiet gathering in a private room?

And Ju Myeongdang has six private rooms all ready to go! Along with the open tables, there are separate spaces like this, so it seemed like a great fit for family meals, get-togethers with friends, dates, or anyone who wants to have a drink while talking quietly. It is also listed as pet-friendly in Gwangju, so keep it in mind if you are out in Dongmyeong-dong with your dog :)

The seat where I sat looked out through a huge window onto Dongmyeong-dong. As time passed and I watched the blue sky gradually grow dark... I suddenly got swept up in the mood. “Ah... this is nice...” Hahahahahaha. Normally, I rush through Dongmyeong-dong several times a day making deliveries, but sitting and looking at it like this felt completely different.

Then we put a bottle of soju right on the table... and the atmosphere was simply complete. Today... this is feeling like it could go somewhere?!

## Choosing the Myeongdang gujeolpan with a kind recommendation

Another thing that stayed with me at Ju Myeongdang was how kind the owner was. They explained the menu item by item and casually recommended what has been popular lately. Honestly... Hwan Sang completely loses it when an owner is kind. Hahahahahaha. I mean, what am I supposed to do when the food is good and the owner is kind too?! That just makes you want to come back next time, right?!

Ju Myeongdang has signature dishes such as the Myeongdang Auntie’s Table and Myeongdang Uncle’s Drinking Table. That day, the owner recommended one item as something that has been popular lately. It was... the Myeongdang gujeolpan, ₩59,000.

According to the tablet menu, it is recommended for two people, and lets you enjoy same-day-butchered domestic Hanwoo raw beef, kombujime (kelp-cured) salmon, large halibut from Jeju, and female Hanwoo yukhoe (seasoned raw beef) all on one platter. Since it is called gujeolpan, I thought there would be lots of different things... and then, shortly after, the dish arrived.

Wait a second. Hahahahahaha. The moment the food came out, my eyes got huge. I actually shouted, “Wow!!!!!!!!” It looks incredible even in photos, but when it appears right in front of you on the table, you need to take pictures before you eat.

And with the delicate misty presentation added in, wow... owner... isn’t this cheating?! Hahahahahaha. Hwan Sang absolutely loves this kind of thing, so it hit my taste perfectly.

First, the vividly red Hanwoo raw beef caught my eye. Because it was domestic Hanwoo butchered that day, it looked fresh from the start. A piece was tender yet pleasantly chewy. It was so clean and easy to enjoy that I reached for the soju glass right away. Ah... the drinks are already going down. Hahahahaha.

### Kombujime-cured salmon and large Jeju halibut

Then there was the beautifully orange salmon! It was not ordinary salmon, but kombujime-cured salmon made using kelp. You can tell from the photo, but the salmon came sliced quite thick. It had the rich softness and savory flavor that salmon is known for, so for salmon-loving Hwan Sang... what more is there to say? One piece, then straight to a drink.

And then the clean-colored large Jeju halibut! This was also sliced quite thick, so you could really enjoy the chew. A light dip in the sauce, then one bite! Mm... dishes like this are so good for slowly picking at one piece at a time while drinking. Salmon, then halibut, then raw beef... it is fun to eat.

It also came with female Hanwoo yukhoe. Thanks to its subtly sweet and savory seasoning, this one felt like it arrived announcing, “I am a drinking snack!” Hahahahahaha. After picking up a bite with my chopsticks and eating it, I thought, ah... no, this will not do. Soju, please.

And although it was hidden by the main dish’s impressive look, there was something I unexpectedly loved that day: miyeokguk (seaweed soup)! At first, I thought it would just be soup served with the main dish. But after one spoonful... “Huh?!” The broth was seriously good?! After a drink, a spoonful of warm seaweed soup soothed my stomach completely... restoring my strength to drink again. Hahahahahaha. This is dangerous soup.

And the kimchi jeon (kimchi pancake)!! Wow... Hwan Sang really enjoyed the kimchi pancake here too. The characteristic flavor of the golden-brown pancake went so well with the savory kimchi that it paired perfectly with soju. One piece from the gujeolpan, one bite of kimchi pancake, a spoonful of seaweed soup, a shot of soju... the perfect route, complete.

## For atmosphere and a generous platter in Dongmyeong-dong

Now... let’s pour it. Hahahahahaha. Great atmosphere! Delicious food! Great visuals! A kind owner! And I am with my younger siblings, so my mood is great too!! At this point... let’s drink ourselves into oblivion today!!!! Hahahahahahahahaha. Of course, everyone, please enjoy delicious food in moderation. Hwan Sang... will live only for today. Hahahahahaha.

Ju Myeongdang, the Dongmyeong-dong favorite I visited with my younger siblings. The exterior first caught my eye because it was pretty, but inside, the atmospheric interior and mood were lovely, and it was a very nice space for naturally having a drink with a meal. In particular, the ₩59,000 Myeongdang gujeolpan we ordered that day was hugely satisfying to share over drinks with my siblings, since one platter offered same-day-butchered domestic Hanwoo raw beef, kombujime-cured salmon, large Jeju halibut, and female Hanwoo yukhoe. Plus the seaweed soup and kimchi pancake that we enjoyed so much!! Honestly... the drinks just go down and down. Hahahahaha. Above all, the owner was so kind that for Hwan Sang, this was a place that left not only great food but also a happy memory.
