Whenever I feel like my energy is dragging lately, eel is the first thing that comes to mind. My family loves eel so much that whenever we need a boost, we go out for it. This time I went hunting for restaurants in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, and ended up at Yuil Jangeo (유일장어) near Pyeongdong and Donggok.

Honestly, eel isn't cheap when you're feeding a whole family. Not just my husband and me — our kids eat eel well too — so we usually order at least three when we go to an eel place. This time we only ordered two, and the whole family still left completely full. What really surprised me was the size and the price, haha!

## Rooms that work well with kids, and a big parking lot

Yuil Jangeo has several private rooms inside, which makes it a good spot for family meals as well as gatherings. Eel is also a great dish to share with parents, and having a room made it that much easier to relax and chat over the meal. Especially when eating out with kids, I prefer places with rooms so we don't have to worry about disturbing other diners, and this checked that box nicely.

The parking lot was another plus — spacious enough that we didn't have to stress about finding a spot. When you're out with three kids, how easy the parking is matters almost as much as how good the food is. Having plenty of space meant we could drive over without any hassle!

## What's on the menu

Looking at the menu, it wasn't just eel — there was eel soup, a lunch special eel set, cold noodles, an eel-galbi patty, dessert eel soup, and even scorched rice soup. Plenty of meal and side options to fill up on after the eel, and since the portions are generous, you can pack up any leftover eel to take home.

## Farm-direct self-grill eel, two for around ₩50,000

Yuil Jangeo, a Gwangsan-gu eel spot, is a self-grill restaurant run directly by its own eel farm. By running the farm themselves, they cut out middlemen and labor costs, which lets them sell eel at a relatively low price, or so I'd heard. Honestly, at first I wondered — if it's cheap, wouldn't the size or quality suffer a bit? But after eating there, that worry turned out to be completely unfounded. The price was easy on the wallet, but the eel quality wasn't lacking at all. If anything, I was shocked by the size.

We put our two chosen eels on the grill that day. If you've eaten eel before, you know the grill plates at these places are usually pretty big. But just two eels nearly filled the whole thing, lol.

The size was genuinely overwhelming. In photos it might just look like "oh, a big eel," but seeing it in person really drives home how large it is. My family eats a lot of eel, so normally we'd order around three, but this time two was more than enough.

And another thing that surprised me — the price! Two eels this big for around ₩50,000... is that even real? Haha. At a typical eel restaurant, eel this size would usually run ₩80,000 to ₩100,000, so it was such a relief to eat with way less financial pressure at this Gwangsan-gu spot.

## It's self-grill, but a staff member still grilled for us

Yuil Jangeo is a self-grill eel restaurant, meaning you cook it yourself. But don't worry — self-grill doesn't mean you have to prep and cut the eel from scratch. It comes already pre-cooked and cut into easy pieces, so all you need to do is finish it off briefly over the charcoal before digging in.

That day, we were so distracted keeping an eye on our three kids that I wasn't sure if we were grilling properly, but a staff member kindly came by regularly and grilled it up nicely for us. Thanks to that, we could look after the kids and still enjoy the eel without stress.

There was also a self-serve side dish bar on one side, so we could easily grab any banchan (side dishes) or vegetables we needed. If we ran low on veggies mid-meal, we could just go grab more without hesitation — great for eating with the family.

### What the charcoal-grilled eel tastes like

I'm someone who firmly believes eel tastes best grilled over charcoal. Watching the big eel pieces turn golden brown on the grill alone was mouthwatering. We lined them up on the grill and cooked them until nicely browned — crisp and savory outside, moist inside, genuinely delicious. The usual heaviness of eel wasn't overwhelming here either; it was light and savory, so I kept reaching for more.

My husband was especially happy. He kept saying "so good" with a thumbs up the entire time 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. He already likes eel, but this time he seemed particularly pleased, and watching him enjoy it so much made me proud too, haha.

### Even our 17-month-old finished a bowl of rice

We went with our kids, and they ate the eel really well too. Our youngest especially — I couldn't believe it. A 17-month-old baby polished off eel with a full bowl of rice, lol. It felt like she ate almost half an eel on her own. Watching her eat so confidently made me laugh.

Seeing the kids eat so well made me glad we chose eel for our family outing. Balancing adult and kid palates when eating out isn't always easy, but this time the kids ate so well that I was thoroughly satisfied!

## The review-event eel-galbi patty and dessert eel soup

Yuil Jangeo was also running a Naver review event. Since you could get an eel-galbi patty through the review event, I joined in just as we were finishing up the eel, curious about the taste. An eel-galbi combo — I'd never heard of it before, but it was surprisingly good! The kids, who'd already eaten so much eel, got excited all over again when the eel-galbi patty showed up. We only meant to taste one from the event at first, but the kids loved it so much I'm thinking of ordering it separately next time. If you're visiting with kids, this is worth trying too.

And of course, after eel, you can't skip the dessert eel soup, haha. Just one spoonful of that hot broth warmed me right up inside. With eel in a rich broth over rice, it really was the right way to finish the meal. Even when you're full, that warm broth just goes down easy, right?

## What made this a satisfying family meal

Whenever I feel low on energy, I usually reach for eel. I believe it's good for you, but honestly the price can make it hard to eat often. What I liked most about Yuil Jangeo is that, thanks to running the farm directly and cutting out middlemen and labor costs, the price felt light relative to the size and quality of the eel.

For a family like ours where even the kids eat eel well, we usually order several at once when eating out, but this time two was enough to leave us all full, which made it even more satisfying. Not just cheap eel, but large, hearty eel at a price that doesn't feel like a burden — that seems to be Yuil Jangeo's biggest strength.

After eating there myself, I understood why it's such a popular eel spot in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. Two large eels nearly filled the grill, and grilling them over charcoal made them taste even better. Best of all, the whole family ate well and left full. My husband was thoroughly satisfied, and the kids ate the eel so well that it was a genuinely happy family outing. If you're looking for a good restaurant in Gwangsan-gu around Pyeongdong or Donggok, or want a proper eel meal with your family, Yuil Jangeo is worth a visit.

Whenever my energy dips, I go looking for eel, and from now on Yuil Jangeo seems like the place I'll keep coming back to — good for my energy and easy on my wallet, haha. Both my husband and I were happy this time, so I think this is where we'll settle for future eel outings 👍🏻 If you're looking for a good eel restaurant in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, I recommend Yuil Jangeo — satisfying in both size and price :)
