## In short

Deokeun Jangeo Main Branch is a charcoal-grilled freshwater eel restaurant near Family Land in Yangsan-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju. Prepped eel costs 4,830 won per 100g, and two people chose two eels weighing just under 800g for about 38,000 won, grilled them over charcoal at the table, and finished with eel soup at around 4,000 won. It's been a while since ipchu (start of autumn) already passed, but it still feels like the tail end of summer, so I went for one last summer body-recovery meal! I heard there's a great-value eel place in Yangsan-dong, so I made the long drive out haha 🫶🏻

Deokeun Jangeo is a Gwangju eel restaurant located near Family Land ⭐️ I went to the main branch in Gwangju.

## Parking for 80 cars and a step-free path from entrance to restroom

Deokeun Jangeo Main Branch has a seriously huge parking lot that fits up to 80 cars 👍🏻‼️ Since eel restaurants tend to have a lot of group gatherings, often with older family members in tow, a big parking lot really feels essential.

There's a disabled parking area right by the store entrance, and regular parking is further up. 💡

This is the part I thought Deokeun Jangeo was really thoughtful about — maybe because it's right next to Chosun University Rehabilitation Hospital, there's a disabled parking area and the entrance all the way to the restroom has no steps so wheelchairs can move freely. Lots of practical touches of consideration here ⭐️

## Weekend lunch wait times and how ordering works at Deokeun Jangeo

When we arrived at Deokeun Jangeo for weekend lunch, there were tons of people, but you can register for the wait on the spot, so we ran over as soon as we got there haha 😂

- Register for the wait
- Get called, choose your eel and pay (1st floor)
- Move to your assigned table (2nd floor)
- Pay for the table setting and extras when you leave (1st floor)

Even though it looked crowded, a lot of people were just lingering over tea after their meal, so we got seated faster than expected 👥😀 There's a waiting area that's cool in summer and warm in winter, so waiting wasn't an issue at all 😚

## How cheap is eel at Deokeun Jangeo? Prices per 100g

So how cheap is this place that made me drive all the way here.. Prepped eel is ₩4,830 per 100g, live eel is ₩29,000 per kg, and for takeout there's a 10% discount on prepped eel / 5% on pre-grilled eel. Isn't that ridiculously cheap..

The reason it can be this affordable is that Deokeun Jangeo, this Gwangju eel restaurant, raises antibiotic-free, domestic Japonica-species freshwater eel directly at their own farm in Muan and distributes it themselves ⭐️ They cut out distribution margins so you get near-wholesale prices without the markup.

On top of that the eels were so plump. My fiancé who ruins everything and I came as a party of two, and we picked two eels just under 800g total, about ₩38,000. They recommend 300–350g per person — good reference if you're not sure how much to order ‼️

## Second-floor seating and the window seats overlooking the fields

After paying for the eel, they hand you a receipt with your table number written on it. Once we went up to the second floor, they kindly directed us using a number sign.

Every single table was full from weekend lunchtime.. anyone looking for a Gwangju eel restaurant, this is the place ♥️ I blurred the faces, but it was pretty much all older folks besides us.. 😳 It really does seem like the perfect spot to bring your parents or grandparents.

The view was amazing too 🌳 if you get seated right by the window, the view of the fields is just gorgeous.

## Self-grilling over charcoal, side dishes and the self-serve bar

Since the place is so big and busy, grilling is self-serve here 🤍 Don't panic though — there's a tablet at the table with tips on how to grill it well! Follow those and you'll be an eel-grilling expert by the end of the meal ⭐️ (allegedly)

The basic side dishes at Deokeun Jangeo are pickled radish, green onion kimchi, wild garlic leaves (myeongi-namul), napa cabbage kimchi, pickled onion, ssamjang, garlic, and ginger + lettuce and perilla leaves are self-serve.

If any side dishes run low, you can just use the self-serve bar in the middle of the restaurant. Staff keep refilling and tidying it, so even though it's busy it stays clean.

Various sauces and fresh vegetables, plus extra tongs, scissors, and aprons — all self-serve too ~!

## What the charcoal-grilled eel tasted like

Drumroll.. plump eel, settling in at this Gwangju eel restaurant.. ⭐️

![Plate of plump raw eel before grilling](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-yangsan-dong-eel-wheelchair-access/gwangju-yangsan-dong-eel-wheelchair-access-17-1o07s-900.webp)

I'm counting on you, fiancé ♥️

![Eel placed on the charcoal grill](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-yangsan-dong-eel-wheelchair-access/gwangju-yangsan-dong-eel-wheelchair-access-18-11zsa-1200.webp)

There are grilling tips provided, but since we're a couple with plenty of camping experience, grilling eel over charcoal is a piece of cake for my fiancé (bragging).

Golden brown — the charcoal heat is so strong the eel cooks fast. If you want to eat quickly, just brace yourself for the heat ⭐️

I'm a ginger person so I already refilled on ginger 😂 Deokeun Jangeo's eel is moist and savory inside, goes down so easily ♥️

![A piece of grilled eel served with ginger](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-yangsan-dong-eel-wheelchair-access/gwangju-yangsan-dong-eel-wheelchair-access-22-gklfb-900.webp)

This was my first time having eel with wild garlic leaves, and wow, what a combo 👍🏻 I hadn't had eel in a while so my expectations were high, and yep — eel is eel..

Maybe because it's the domestic Japonica species, there was no fishy smell at all, just really savory and rich — proper body recovery food 🫶🏻

My clumsy fiancé and I — the charcoal got way too hot so we grilled fast and pulled the fire out 😂

## Finishing with 4,000-won eel soup, self-serve coffee and ice cream

After stuffing ourselves with eel, we finished with eel soup for dessert ⭐️ It was about ₩4,000, really cheap, and it was thick and rich, deeply flavored eel soup. Filling and perfect as a finale 🤭

On your way out there's self-serve coffee too 🤍 Ice is set out as well, so you can make it exactly how you like.

If you take part in the review event, you get one free ice cream!! You can also buy one, great as a palate cleanser 🤭

They also sell pre-grilled eel and eel extract, great as gifts for body recovery, perfect for a Chuseok holiday gift?! You can even arrange shipping right at the store, handy for sending some to family who live far away ⭐️

## Is Deokeun Jangeo in Gwangju worth a visit?

Today's spot was Deokeun Jangeo Main Branch, well known by word of mouth as a Gwangju eel restaurant ♥️ If you're looking for a restaurant to bring your parents or grandparents to, need a gift for the upcoming Chuseok holiday, or need to host a proper meal during the holidays, I really, really recommend this place 👍🏻 The best part is you can properly nourish your body without the price weighing you down ‼️🤍
