Traveling with them is fun for seeing pretty places, of course, but we can’t leave out the time spent chatting over delicious food, haha. While looking around Damyang Metaprovence, we wanted a hearty Korean lunch, so we headed to Gugane META Bapsang (구가네 META 밥상). We visited for weekday lunch with my sisters, and it had such a relaxed atmosphere for sitting down, chatting, and eating. It looked good for families, as well as friends or couples stopping by on a Damyang date. I had eaten it now and then since childhood, so I was happy to see it right away, haha. It is a Gwangju and South Jeolla specialty: crisp fried items placed in fresh lettuce leaves and eaten together. The crunchy fritters and crisp lettuce made for great texture, and it felt far cleaner and fresher than eating the fritters alone. Gugane META Bapsang’s lettuce fritters were especially good paired with the stir-fried squid that arrived next. ## Stone-plate stir-fried squid full of smoky flavor And then came the Damyang stir-fried squid I had been most looking forward to! It was not just hot for the sake of heat; it was a sauce that kept drawing us back, and my sisters and I kept saying how delicious it was as we ate. It was also tasty to have the stir-fried squid with the lettuce fritters, so it was great for ordering a few things and sharing. The crisp bean sprouts brought the texture to life even more with the spicy sauce, and they went so well with the squid. A bite of chewy squid with a bite of crunchy bean sprouts made the spicy seasoning feel easy to enjoy, and I just kept reaching for more. We tried it with this and that, telling each other, “It’s even better like this!” as we happily ate. Spoon the stir-fried squid and bean sprouts over hot rice too—it is a perfect combination! Its location is handy for eating after looking around Metaprovence, and the generous spread of lettuce fritters, stone-plate stir-fried squid, and fried rice left us full and satisfied. The sizzling stone-plate stir-fried squid was the dish that stayed with me most. It is something I would like to eat again the next time I visit Damyang.
