## In short

Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi is a Korean restaurant near Jeonju Hanok Village in Jeonju, Jeonbuk. I had its galbi hot-pot set with Jeonju-style mulgalbi, yukjeon, steamed egg, and egg rice. Verdict: a warming, satisfying choice for something beyond Jeonju’s usual classics.

Bibimbap and bean sprout soup are both great on a trip to Jeonju, but this time I wanted to try something a little different, so I went to Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi. It is a place near Jeonju Hanok Village where you can try mulgalbi, so it was nice for a meal while exploring the village. We ordered a set that included both galbi hot pot and yukjeon (pan-fried battered beef). Jeonju-style mulgalbi is made by simmering ribs with bean sprouts and assorted vegetables in a shallow broth, so it has a charm that feels different from a typical galbi hot pot.

## A convenient stop after exploring Hanok Village

Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi is on the first floor at 28 Dongmun-gil, Wansan-gu, Jeonju, and it was easy to find because it is close to the rear entrance of Hanok Village Public Parking Lot No. 1. It is in a good spot for moving over to a meal after walking along the main streets of Hanok Village, making it easy to add to a Jeonju itinerary. There is also parking in front of the restaurant, so visiting by car felt fairly convenient.

The exterior was neat and suited the atmosphere around Hanok Village, so it caught my eye even while passing by. If you are looking for a filling place to eat after sightseeing in Hanok Village, the accessibility is pretty good too.

Hours are from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and there is a weekday break, so keep that in mind when visiting. Inside, the overall atmosphere was clean and comfortable. The tables were spaced so eating did not feel cramped, and it looked suitable for families too. During a Jeonju Hanok Village trip, it felt like a nice setting not only for tourists but also for a family meal or a visit with friends.

## Mulgalbi and yukjeon together in the galbi hot-pot set

After looking over the menu, we ordered the galbi hot-pot set. Since it included yukjeon with the galbi hot pot, we chose it so we could try both mulgalbi and jeon (Korean savory pancake) at once.

Before long, a generous galbi hot pot arrived in a huge pot. It was piled high with glass noodles, bean sprouts, enoki mushrooms, assorted mushrooms, scallions, carrots, and more over the ribs, so it looked abundant before we even started. The red seasoning was tucked between the ribs, which had me expecting a spicy, warming flavor before it even began to boil. Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi says it makes its Jeonju-style mulgalbi with a special seasoning and broth using fruit and natural ingredients, based on 30 years of food-service experience.

Once we turned on the heat and let it bubble away, the vegetables wilted down and the ribs and glass noodles started to reveal themselves. As the broth boiled, the aroma of the seasoning rose up—spicy with a gentle sweetness—and it really got my appetite going.

After the ribs had cooked for a while, we cut them one by one into easy-to-eat pieces. As in the photo, picking up a rib and snipping it with scissors revealed plenty of thick meat. I tried a well-cooked piece with bean sprouts and a little broth; the seasoning had soaked into the meat nicely, making it rich and tender. The bean sprouts stayed crisp while the ribs cooked juicy and soft, so the textures worked really well together.

There were plenty of glass noodles and vegetables too, and you cannot leave out the glass noodles in mulgalbi. Scooping them up with the broth, they were chewy and thoroughly infused with the spicy seasoning. With lots of bean sprouts and mushrooms as well, it was fun to pick through different ingredients rather than eating ribs alone, and the broth seemed to deepen as the vegetables cooked into it.

> Here is the galbi hot pot and yukjeon spread.

A bubbling hot pot just cannot taste bad. I was someone who wondered why anyone would go all the way to Jeonju for mulgalbi, but my mind changed today. Mulgalbi is ridiculously delicious...

## The best yukjeon of my life...

> Yukjeon — the best yukjeon of my life...

![Golden pan-fried yukjeon](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-water-galbi/jeonju-hanok-village-water-galbi-09-mqkuu-900.webp)

While we were eating the galbi hot pot, the yukjeon we had ordered arrived too. The golden-brown pieces looked so appetizing, and when I picked up a piece, the outside was savory and nicely cooked while the meat inside was tender.

You cannot even grasp how tender it is just from the cross-section. It sliced apart so easily—so, so tender. If you like jeon or yukjeon among the foods around Jeonju Hanok Village, this is a menu item worth ordering alongside your meal.

![Yukjeon with side dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeonju-hanok-village-water-galbi/jeonju-hanok-village-water-galbi-12-13rfv-900.webp)

It was mild and savory even on its own, but my favorite combination was definitely yukjeon topped with seasoned chives.

Taking a bite of golden yukjeon piled generously with tangy seasoned chives, the fresh flavor of the chives joined the nuttiness of the beef and made it feel much cleaner. It was also so good with rice. A total rice thief and drink thief.

## Fluffy steamed egg and egg rice

Then the steamed egg we had ordered appeared too. I scooped up the softly puffed, fluffy steamed egg, and it was tender and warm—great to eat between bites of the spicy mulgalbi. When the mulgalbi broth filled my mouth with heat, the soft steamed egg felt like a little reset, so I kept reaching for it.

I could not possibly stop with steamed egg alone, so I added rice and mixed it together. With plenty of steamed egg over warm rice and a quick stir, a moist, soft bowl of egg rice was complete. Adding a little mulgalbi broth brought together the spicy seasoning and savory egg flavor, making it seriously filling. After having plenty of ribs, glass noodles, and vegetables, mixing rice into the steamed egg was the perfect way to finish the meal.

I wanted fried rice too, but it is only available from two-person orders, so not getting it is my lifelong regret ㅠㅠ At first, the pot had been overflowing with ribs, vegetables, and glass noodles, but before we knew it, we had cleared it down to the bottom. We cut the ribs into manageable pieces and ate them with bean sprouts, soaked the glass noodles and mushrooms in the broth, and had the yukjeon with seasoned chives—such a filling meal. Finishing with rice mixed into the steamed egg made it all feel wonderfully complete.

If you want to try proper Jeonju-style mulgalbi rather than the usual dishes around Jeonju Hanok Village, Hanok Maeul Mulgalbi was a good choice. It would suit anyone looking for mulgalbi in Jeonju’s Pungnam-dong area or craving a warm Korean meal during a Hanok Village trip, and having yukjeon too makes it a nice spot for a Jeonju date. If you are exploring Jeonju Hanok Village and looking for something to eat, enjoy a generous meal of galbi hot pot and yukjeon.
