Now that the weather's cooling down, I randomly started craving sushi haha. So this time I went with a friend for lunch to Shirokuma in Mulgeum, Yangsan, a spot known for its sushi. It's near the army base, so it's a great pick for office workers or students who want a light lunch. They also have a cooked sushi lineup, so even people who find raw fish a bit much can eat comfortably — perfect Yangsan lunch course.

## Where Shirokuma is and where to park

Shirokuma sits on the first floor, tucked into an alley off Hwahap 4-gil in Mulgeum-eup, Yangsan. The white sign with the bear logo makes it easy to spot from a distance.

Parking is available right in front (2 spots) plus 2 more in the building next door, for 4 total. If those are full, there's a public parking lot nearby in Hwangsan Village that's free from 6pm to 9am, so evenings are even more convenient.

## Inside Shirokuma: seating and atmosphere

Inside, white brick mixes with wooden tables and black accents for a clean, modern feel. The tables are spaced generously too, so I didn't feel crowded by neighboring seats.

The 4-seat table against the wall had hooks for hanging jackets, which was handy.

It's an open kitchen, so you can watch the chefs shaping the sushi, which gave me confidence about hygiene.

There's a separate waiting area near the entrance. If it gets crowded during the lunch rush, you can sit there while you wait — the chairs have backs, so it's comfortable even for a short wait.

And here's a small delightful touch! There are Lip Clear stick mouthwashes in the bathroom. It's nice for freshening up after eating, so I grabbed one — I loved that thoughtful detail.

There's a candy basket at the counter, and next to it stood a receipt event board. First prize is a ₩50,000 meal voucher (3 winners), second is ₩30,000 (6 winners), third is ₩10,000 (20 winners) — plus salmon sushi and handmade chocolate. A fun little bonus haha.

## Ordering from the tablet at your table

At Shirokuma you order using the tablet at your table. The premium sushi guide lists salmon, milchi (needlefish), tuna belly, flounder, eggplant sushi, garlic shrimp, and futomaki (thick rolled sushi), each with its own sauce noted.

Pieces marked with a star, like the eggplant sushi or tuna belly, are recommended to eat without soy sauce. Set menus range from the ₩12,000s to the ₩20,000s, so it's an easy pick for a Yangsan lunch without breaking the bank.

After ordering, salad, warm miso-style soup, and a personal plate come out first as standard sides. The soup warmed me up nicely before the sushi arrived.

My main pick was the 12-piece Cooked Sushi Set. It costs ₩22,000 and includes 3 pieces each of grilled salmon, beef, eggplant sushi, and garlic shrimp.

It's built specifically for people who want cooked sushi, so even I, who can't handle raw fish well, enjoyed every single piece from start to finish haha. This kind of lineup is rare among Yangsan sushi spots.

### Grilled salmon, 3 pieces, loaded with salmon sauce

The grilled salmon is torched on the surface, so a smoky flavor really comes through. The salmon sauce on top was savory and smooth, pairing well with the rich salmon.

### Beef, 3 pieces, topped with pickled onion

The beef sushi is topped with pickled onion. The meat is slightly sweet, and the onion cuts the richness — personally my favorite bite ❤️

This was my first time trying eggplant sushi, and the grilled eggplant was moist, with a sweetish sauce on top that made it far tastier than I expected. Recommended to eat as is, without soy sauce.

### Garlic shrimp, 3 pieces, with garlic mayo and garlic chips

The garlic shrimp is grilled shrimp topped with garlic mayo, plus crispy garlic chips on top. If you love garlic, you really need to try this hahaha.

## À la carte add-ons: three kinds of shrimp

Since the set alone felt like it wasn't quite enough, we added à la carte orders: 2 garlic shrimp, 6 soy shrimp, and 2 sweet vinegar shrimp. True to its reputation as a Yangsan sushi spot, there was quite a variety of shrimp.

The sweet vinegar shrimp is a basic sushi topped with springy cooked shrimp, clean and easy to eat. The garlic shrimp was so good in the set that we ordered it again haha.

The soy shrimp had translucent, chewy flesh with the soy flavor lightly soaked in. It wasn't too salty, more on the sweet side, so it kept pairing well with rice and I kept reaching for more.

## Finishing with two mini soba

Finally we ordered two mini soba. It's a warm-broth soba topped with dried seaweed flakes, chopped green onion, and wasabi.

The noodles were chewy and the broth wasn't sweet, so it made a clean, refreshing finish after all the sushi. The portion is mini, so it's just right for two people to each have one alongside.
