## In short

Anok is a hanok Korean restaurant in an alley off Hongik-ro in Hongdae, Seoul, fronted by a tiled roof and earthen walls. On a weekday evening three of us ordered clear gomtang (beef bone soup) at 13,000 won, water-based Pyongyang naengmyeon (buckwheat cold noodles) at 14,000 won and seasoned braised ox tail, alternating between the light soup, the mild noodle broth and the glossy sauce. Anok gets both the setting and the food right, and it suits a hangover cure or a quiet dinner conversation equally well.

> I visited Anok, a place with a tiled roof and mud-brick walls right in the middle of a Hongdae alley. Open the front gate and a path of white gravel and stepping stones leads you in, and once inside you find a tidy hall decorated with solid wood pillars and lattice doors. Orders go through a tablet at the table, which supports multiple languages, so there were plenty of foreign customers too. The clear gomtang (beef bone soup) is apparently simmered for 48 hours with astragalus root and burdock, skimming off the fat the whole time — and the broth really is clear, yet the meat flavor comes through strong. It isn't salty, so I kept spooning it up until the end. The Pyongyang naengmyeon (buckwheat cold noodles) had a subtle buckwheat aroma and a mild broth, good for alternating bites with the gomtang. Adding the seasoned braised ox tail on top struck just the right balance between the plain broths and the sauce. This is a place that takes care of both atmosphere and food. The broth is gentle enough for a hangover, and it's a Hongdae restaurant I'd recommend for a quiet meal and conversation.

## Anok's tiled roof in a Hongik-ro alley in Hongdae

Anok is a hanok-style Korean restaurant at 13-4 Hongikro, Mapo-gu, Seoul, right in the middle of a Hongdae alley. I was walking down the Hongikro alley when a tiled roof suddenly appeared, and I stopped in my tracks.

The area is lined with ordinary commercial buildings, but this one house has mud-brick walls and a wooden gate, making it hard to just walk past. Today I'm introducing Anok, a gomtang (beef bone soup) restaurant in Hongdae.

Open the front gate and a courtyard of white gravel and stepping stones leads inward. A lantern glows under the eaves, and the mood completely changes the moment you pass through the gate. It's so photogenic that I'd already taken a few shots just walking in.

## Anok's seating, tablet ordering and menu prices

Inside, Anok is tidily decorated with solid wood pillars and lattice doors. The seats are spaced generously and the ceiling isn't low, so it never felt cramped. Even on a weekday evening, the seats were nearly full.

Orders are placed through a tablet at each table. It supports languages other than Korean, so foreign guests seemed to order comfortably too. The menu includes clear gomtang at 13,000 won, large clear gomtang at 17,000 won, water-based Pyongyang naengmyeon at 14,000 won, bibim (spicy mixed) naengmyeon at 15,000 won, and yukhoe bibimbap at 18,000 won.

Once you place an order, a description of the broth appears on the screen. It says the broth is made with medicinal ingredients like astragalus root and burdock, with the fat skimmed off over 48 hours. Reading this before even tasting the soup made me look forward to it even more.

## What side dishes come with a meal at Anok?

At Anok, side dishes are set out first: napa cabbage kimchi, cubed radish kimchi, pickled peppers, and a small dish of ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste). It's not flashy, but it's a perfect match for gomtang and naengmyeon. The cubed radish kimchi was especially crunchy, and I kept reaching for it.

## What does Anok's 48-hour clear gomtang taste like?

Anok's clear gomtang came out first. True to its name, the broth is really clear. Almost no fat is visible, but one spoonful brings out a rich meat flavor. It isn't salty, so I kept spooning up the broth on its own. The meat was also generously portioned.

## Anok's Pyongyang naengmyeon: mild broth topped with boiled pork

I heard Anok is also known as a Pyongyang naengmyeon spot in Hongdae, so I ordered the water naengmyeon too. The noodles come topped generously with boiled pork, and the broth is on the mild side.

The noodles have a subtle buckwheat aroma and snap easily. Wrapping the boiled pork in the noodles and eating it in one bite really brings out a savory flavor. I'd recommend alternating between the gomtang and the naengmyeon.

## Seasoned braised ox tail completes the table for three

On top of all that, we added Anok's seasoned braised ox tail. The glossy sauce topped with sesame seeds and chopped scallions looks great from the start. The skin is chewy and the meat is tender, and it isn't spicy, so it went well alongside the clear gomtang.

Set out like this for three people, the table was completely full. The light gomtang broth, the mild naengmyeon, and the ox tail made for a well-balanced meal.

## What kind of occasion suits Anok in Hongdae?

To sum up, Anok takes care of both atmosphere and food. The broth is gentle enough to work as a hangover cure the morning after drinking, and it's also an easygoing option for lunch in Hongdae. If you're looking for a Hongdae restaurant for a quiet meal and conversation, I'd recommend giving it a try.
