I wanted to properly experience the freshness and hand-crafted care of good seafood, so I headed to Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada, a newly opened seasonal seafood restaurant near Daeheung Station in Mapo. Even on opening day it was already packed with crowds — and after tasting the food myself, I could tell it was only a matter of time before word got around, every single dish had such a different level of quality.

I ordered the Mapo Bada Signature Set, a whole tableful of top-grade seafood prepared fresh daily alongside neat but generous specialty dishes. From an end-boss assortment of four kinds of sashimi to sweet, springy salt-grilled shrimp, all the way to autumn's seasonal delicacy — gizzard shad sashimi and grilled gizzard shad that just calls to you once the cool wind starts blowing! Let me show you my honest review of the whole experience.

The interior of Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada is cozy yet really clean, and with private separated seating available, it seemed like a great spot for a Mapo family gathering, various get-togethers, or grabbing a drink with friends after work. I was only able to get shots like this because I visited right at opening time — not long after, the place was completely full.

And I really loved that, aside from the drinks sold in-store, they offer free corkage for one bottle of wine/whiskey/sake/traditional liquor, with a ₩10,000 fee per bottle after that.

The Mapo Bada Signature Set, ₩151,000. It comes out as a whole spread so generous the table practically buckles, packed with the freshness of the sea and then slotted onto the table.

It included 4 kinds of raw fish (flounder, sea bream, threadsail filefish, sea bass), gizzard shad sashimi, live shrimp, salt-grilled shrimp, grilled gizzard shad, a seafood platter, cold pork belly with tofu kimchi, cold boiled pork, abalone innard porridge, kimchi jjigae, steamed egg, and seaweed soup — truly full and generous.

That live shrimp was still wriggling as it grilled... sorry, big shrimp! T_T

I also really liked that there was a whole lineup of not-too-heavy dishes perfect for whetting the appetite, like cold boiled pork, steamed egg, and seaweed soup.

Packed with pork and tangy kimchi, this kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) was spicy, tangy, and refreshing — perfect for a palate refresh in between bites of raw fish and grilled shrimp!

The grilled gizzard shad was golden-brown and so good picked up whole by the piece that I ended up eating two on my own, haha.

The king prawns looked amazing too. Gorgeous king prawns fresh out of the tank, still flapping around moments earlier — and the size was no joke.

The cold boiled pork came with a fragrant, savory wild chamnamul (Korean parsley) salad, and thanks to the tangy-sweet sauce, I kept looking forward to the next bite.

## How the 2kg flounder and maskawa red sea bream tasted in the four-fish sashimi platter

The four-kind sashimi set at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada is flounder + sea bream + threadsail filefish + sea bass. It also came with live shrimp and live gizzard shad included, so the lineup was really full.

I was especially excited that the flounder and sea bream were served at 2kg or more each. Sliced thick, I figured the texture would be great — and sure enough, it filled my mouth with a rich chewiness. The flounder was clean-tasting but springy with strong elasticity, satisfying to chew. The sea bream came as skin-on maskawa style, with a chewy texture and a subtle sweetness plus a nutty aroma that was excellent. And the clean-tasting sea bass, perfect for summer, along with the firm yet appropriately soft and chewy threadsail filefish — it was truly moving.

The live shrimp, whose weapon is sweetness, was also no joke — such a springy, chewy texture, totally alive.

I also fell headfirst into the charm of the fresh seasonal live gizzard shad sekkoshi (bone-in sliced sashimi). Sliced bone-in, it was naturally nutty, with a crunchy texture that made every bite fun.

I put on disposable gloves first, and for my daughters who were opening their mouths like baby sparrows, I set aside the hassle of peeling shells and just happily fed them one by one — and they kept staring at just my hands saying it was springy and sweet, haha! Also, if you ask, they'll turn the shrimp heads into savory fried bites — just so you know. I was too full and had to skip it, sadly...

## What fell short when three small eaters shared the set

I really should have gone with my partner instead — going with just my light-eater daughters meant we had to leave a lot behind, which was such a shame T_T It's still stuck in my head...💧

From the thick-sliced four kinds of sashimi to the salt-grilled shrimp and grilled gizzard shad, there was so much food that my chopsticks stayed busy right up to the last bite! Fresh seasonal seafood plus a neat yet generous full spread made for a satisfying experience from start to finish at Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada, a Daeheung Station favorite! Next time I want to go with my partner and really show what proper dish-washing looks like!
