After visiting Lotte Department Store Main Branch in the evening, we were looking for somewhere nearby to eat dinner and ended up at Mentsuru City Hall Branch. My sister, who I was with, loves ramen and often goes hunting for ramen restaurants — and this one seemed to be famous as a go-to spot for office workers near City Hall Station too. We'd found a ramen place that suited both our needs, so we decided to check it out.

## Mentsuru City Hall Branch: the storefront and seating, and is it hard to get a table?

Mentsuru City Hall Branch is on the first floor along Seoseomun-ro 11-gil, with around 30 seats. The exterior has a clean wood-tone feel, and it really gives off the charm of a cozy little Japanese shop haha.

They say you can enjoy a deep ramen broth here. And since it's a ramen restaurant, I was a little worried the seats might feel cramped — but that turned out not to be the case at all!

If the first floor is full, they'll seat you in the basement instead. I loved that this is a ramen place where you never have to worry about a table. It was pouring rain the day we visited, and when we stepped inside, the space wasn't humid at all, which made it even nicer for a meal.

We went in and sat at the counter seats, where I noticed signatures from all kinds of celebrities — Le Sserafim, Lycienne, and more. I thought, wow, this must be a place even celebrities come to eat.

## Ordering at the kiosk and what is on the Mentsuru menu

Once you walk into Mentsuru City Hall Branch, there's a kiosk — you order there first, and then they show you to your seat. There's a wide range of menu items like soy sauce ramen, shio ramen, and gyudon, but we ordered tsukemen, the ramen you dip into sauce.

And they had melon cider, which I always used to see in Japan, so I thought — we have to order this!!!! — and did, right away.

Here's the melon cider that arrived first. The melon flavor really came through, and the fizzy kick reminded me of something I hadn't had in a while — it was delicious.

## Tsukemen in a stone pot: how we ate it

Here's the tsukemen we ordered. Tsukemen, they say, is a style of Japanese ramen where the noodles and broth are served separately for dipping. Unlike regular ramen, the noodles aren't sitting in the soup — instead, thick, chewy, springy noodles come out on a plate, with a small bowl of thick, concentrated broth alongside for dipping bite by bite. The broth had a much richer, deeper flavor than regular ramen. And it came in a warm stone pot, which meant we could enjoy the ramen hot all the way through — a real plus.

First we dipped the tsukemen noodles straight into the broth. I thought the broth might be a bit salty given how concentrated it looked, but not at all! It was delicious haha. And since it came in a stone pot, the broth never cooled down, which made it even better.

Second, we wrapped the noodles in seaweed and ate them that way, which was also really good. Third, we dipped the noodles with a little chashu, and that was tasty too. Sometimes when I'm just eating plain ramen I get a bit sick of it, but with Mentsuru's tsukemen, being able to eat it so many different ways meant I enjoyed it all the way through! Even though I tend to eat slowly, I'd worried the noodles might go soft — but that wasn't the case at all haha. Definitely felt like a proper ramen spot.

While we were eating, I noticed they were running a Google review and Naver review event too. If you have a bit of time, it seems worth taking part! Since the place clearly gets a lot of foreign visitors, there were reviews written in English for international guests as well as Korean reviews, which was nice to see. They say if you take part in the review event, you get a drink or fried gyoza.

## Who Mentsuru City Hall Branch is best for

With bar seating good for solo dining and extra seats downstairs too, this is a restaurant I'd recommend if you're craving Japanese ramen or have any reason to be near City Hall Station on Line 2 :-) There's no ramen restaurant near my place, but I found myself wishing there were a Mentsuru branch near my office too haha.
