## In short

Geumdon Hwaro Sangil-dong Station Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant on the first floor of the Megasquare building near Sangil-dong Station in Gangdong, Seoul. Two diners shared the Geumdon Set B for two, added grilled hangjeongsal (pork jowl), and let the staff grill everything down to the fern greens and mushrooms, but it was the ₩7,000 pork-packed kimchi jjigae that stole the show. Verdict: generous, well-seasoned pork and a shockingly cheap stew make this a worthwhile stop.

The day I got back from a trip to Japan, the first place I went straight from the airport was Geumdon Hwaro Sangil-dong Station Branch. It's a place where staff grill your meat from start to finish, but that day, the ₩7,000 kimchi jjigae stuck with me just as much as the meat did.

## Location near Godeok Grasium and Godeok Arteon, Geumdon Hwaro Sangil-dong Station Branch

The restaurant is on the first floor of the Megasquare building at the Godeok Central Prugio commercial complex. It's an easy spot to find around Sangil-dong Station, near Godeok Grasium and Godeok Arteon.

## A place that looks after waiting guests too

There was a wait when I arrived. Watching people who'd been waiting get served something free, I realized they take care of you even during the wait. The sign at the entrance laid out the service by wait time: at the time of my visit, 15–30 minutes got you a drink, 30 minutes to an hour got you soju or beer, and an hour got you a serving of meat. From the waiting side of things, a small gesture like that probably feels bigger than it sounds.

Inside, other diners were already eating, with staff grilling meat right at their tables. I was tired from just getting back from my trip, and I remember thinking I'd made the right call coming somewhere that grills for you.

## Two of us, one Geumdon Set B, kimchi jjigae, and added hangjeongsal

The table filled up with various side dishes and sauces. Between the two of us, we ordered the Geumdon Set B for two and the pork-packed kimchi jjigae, and added hangjeongsal (pork jowl) on top.

Set B comes with two servings of aged fresh pork belly and one serving of aged fresh pork neck. Getting both belly and neck together made it easy to decide what to order for two people. Prices are from the menu photo I took that day, and rice is sold separately from the jjigae.

There's a wide range of sauces too, and a sign on the table suggesting which side dishes and sauces pair with the meat. I liked that it let you think through which combination to try with each bite.

## They grill everything — pork, fern greens, mushrooms, all of it

They set the pan over charcoal and the staff grilled the pork belly and neck for us. You can tell from the photos that the cuts were quite thick. With someone else grilling, I could just relax and eat without worrying about timing.

The quality of the meat held up while eating it, too. Off to the side, they grilled fern greens (gosari) and mushrooms alongside the meat — they didn't just take care of the pork and stop there, they handled the sides just as well.

## The free egg custard and salad were also great

The egg custard (gyeranjjim) and fresh salad (geotjeori) came free. The egg custard caught my eye right away, puffed up over the top of its stone bowl, and the salad went well alongside it. Both were free dishes but genuinely tasty, so there was plenty to reach for beyond the meat.

An extra egg custard costs ₩5,000 per the menu.

The staff kept cutting the meat into bite-sized pieces and grilling more. I also got a shot of the thick cuts cooking piece by piece.

## My pick: garlic sauce and salted shrimp

The sign suggested combos like wild chive with pickled onion and garlic sauce, or mustard-leaf pickle with wasabi and garlic sauce. There was also a combo of grilled white kimchi with pickled onion, salted shrimp sauce, and grilled fern greens. We tried a bunch of the sauces and sides ourselves. My favorite was dipping the meat in garlic sauce and salted shrimp sauce (melchi-jeot). With everything from salt to fermented seafood on offer, you can just pick whatever suits your taste.

If you ask, they'll bring lettuce wraps separately. We asked and got some, along with garlic and chili peppers. If wraps aren't part of the initial table setting, just ask if you want them.

## Here's how much pork is really in the ₩7,000 kimchi jjigae

The pork-packed kimchi jjigae lived up to its name. When I scooped it with the ladle, I was genuinely surprised by how much pork was packed in. This is the kind of stew you order as a side at a BBQ place, but it wasn't the kind where you go hunting for a stray piece or two of meat.

I'm usually a little let down when the kimchi in a jjigae is too crunchy and feels separate from the broth. Here, the kimchi was cooked down to just the right texture, which I liked. It wasn't just a lot of pork — the kimchi jjigae itself was genuinely tasty.

![Pork-packed kimchi jjigae full of meat](https://img.superchart.com/images/geumdon-hwaro-sangildong-kimchi-stew/geumdon-hwaro-sangildong-kimchi-stew-20-k9ckf-966.webp)

![Ladle scooping up pork from the kimchi jjigae](https://img.superchart.com/images/geumdon-hwaro-sangildong-kimchi-stew/geumdon-hwaro-sangildong-kimchi-stew-21-cvi58-966.webp)

This is ₩7,000, with rice sold separately. It's hard enough these days to find a full meal for ₩7,000, and given the amount and quality of the pork in it, this price felt almost unreasonable, haha. If they were open for lunch, I'd want to come back just for this kimchi jjigae alone.

As pieces finished cooking, they moved them onto a stone slab next to the grill, and the mushrooms came out nicely browned too. Eating the meat alongside the stew, I felt like I'd picked the right meal for the day I got back from my trip.

Here's a shot of the hangjeongsal we added. With belly, neck, and now pork jowl too, we got to try several cuts — and since the staff grilled this one too, I could relax through to the end.

## In short

From how they take care of waiting guests to the careful hand grilling the pork, fern greens, and mushrooms, this was a thoughtful spot all around. The meat quality was good, and I enjoyed the free egg custard and salad as well as the pork-packed kimchi jjigae. Meat and kimchi jjigae right after landing back from Japan — walking out, it genuinely felt like all my travel fatigue had melted away, haha.
