If you're driving around looking for good places to visit in Eonyang and need a spot to rest, I'd recommend MUG in Sangbuk-myeon. It's a large bakery café surrounded by mountains and forest, with a spacious interior, an outdoor garden, and even a small gallery space right from the entrance where you can look at artwork. It feels less like a place to simply have coffee and dessert and more like a space where you experience nature, architecture, and art together.

MUG's atmosphere gets even calmer on rainy days. Through the huge picture windows you can see the damp garden and mountain ridge, so you feel like you've gone on a trip without even doing anything outdoors. It's a great fit as a large Ulsan café, an Eonyang drive-course stop, and a rainy-day date spot.

What makes MUG feel even more special is the story behind it. The land where the café now stands was apparently used to grow ornamental trees for over 20 years. But after losing much of it to a wildfire, the owners replanted trees and built paths, gradually shaping a new space. Knowing that they kept traces of loss visible in the architecture and garden rather than hiding them, and turned it back into a place for people to stay, changes how you see the scenery a little.

## Why is MUG's exterior clad in black wood?

The dark, charred-looking wood that appears throughout MUG's interior and exterior wasn't chosen just for atmosphere, apparently. Charred timber (tanhwamok) was used as a building material to preserve the memory of the ornamental trees that were damaged in a 2013 wildfire.

Usually painful traces get covered up, but here they were made part of the space instead — which is striking. The dark exterior walls, evoking a burned forest, contrast with the green trees growing back around them, and the idea of "recovery" that MUG wants to convey comes through naturally.

Outside there's a zelkova tree that survived the wildfire, and instead of cutting it down, the building was designed around its position. Walking along the outdoor terrace, you can actually see the building curving and following the trees. It's not simply a newly landscaped, pretty spot — knowing it was built around existing nature and time made it that much more memorable.

## A look around MUG's exterior and outdoor garden

Arriving at MUG, the first thing you notice is the dark-colored building following a long curve. Rather than showy decoration, the plain exterior of black walls and wide glass windows lets the surrounding forest and greenery stand out even more.

In front of the building there's a long water feature. The building, trees, and sky reflect on the calm water, which looks charming even on overcast days. On rainy days the raindrops falling onto the water add yet another mood.

The outdoor garden stretches wide behind and beside the café. It looks less like a manicured garden and more like the existing nature was preserved as much as possible. Large natural stones, trees, and dirt paths blend together, and a small ecological pond has lotus leaves and aquatic plants, making it nice for a light walk. If the weather's even better, I'd definitely recommend it as a date spot!

During the major 2013 wildfire, many surrounding trees were damaged, but five zelkova trees held on with everything they had. To preserve these trees without harming them, MUG reflected their positions from the building design stage onward. It was a genuinely meaningful place.

Now they're a shady spot where visitors to this large Ulsan café come to rest, carrying the meaning of a space revived after damage even further. This place was a bigger hit than I expected.

Steps and walking paths connect throughout, letting you walk close to the forest. There are plenty of green tables and chairs outside too, so on nice-weather days you can use it like a forest café.

There are lots of seats under the trees, so the outdoor seating atmosphere should be great in early summer or fall. There's also a large outdoor area where you can bring your dog, so it's worth noting if you're looking for a place to take your pup out.

One unexpectedly impressive part of MUG was the gallery space right off the entrance. The flow is a bit different from typical large cafés where you see the order counter as soon as you walk in. First comes a small exhibition space with high ceilings and white walls, with several artworks hung along the walls.

As you slowly look at each piece and move further in, you naturally arrive at the café space. It's not a huge museum, but being able to casually enjoy some artwork on the way to get coffee is a fun setup.

It doesn't feel like the café and exhibition space are forced apart, either. Thanks to the high ceilings, exposed concrete, and understated lighting, the gallery connects naturally to MUG's architectural mood. So it would fit just as well to describe this as a gallery-style café where you can enjoy a small exhibition alongside your bakery visit, rather than just a bakery café. On rainy days when outdoor activities are limited, looking at artwork and drinking coffee is enough to complete a date course on its own — I liked that.

The counter is also wide and airy. A long dark-colored bar combined with warm wood shelving fits well with the overall interior.

## Why the picture-window seats at MUG are the best

Passing the gallery and heading further in, the main café space opens up. It's much wider and longer in person than photos suggest. The ceiling is left high and open with exposed concrete structure, and thanks to the large pillars and curving lines, it feels grand yet distinctive.

Overall, exposed concrete, wood, and metal materials come together in harmony. In a concrete space that could easily feel cold, bright natural wood furniture and soft indirect lighting add warmth.

But MUG's biggest strength is the picture window. It spans nearly an entire wall of the building, with mountain and garden scenery beyond it. Right in front of the window there's a long row of tables good for 2–4 people, and personally, this is the seating I'd recommend most.

What you see out the window isn't buildings or roads but trees and mountains. So even though it's a busy large café, sitting there feels surprisingly relaxed. Especially on a cloudy or rainy day like this one, thin mist settles on the mountain ridge and the green of the trees gets even more vivid. Just sitting with a cup of coffee, quietly looking out the window, felt healing.

On the opposite side of the building, the outdoor garden and trees are also fully visible through floor-to-ceiling windows. The boundary between indoors and outdoors isn't strong, so it feels like a café built inside the forest itself.

## MUG's bakery case and what time the bread sells out

MUG is a bakery café where you can enjoy a variety of breads and cakes alongside coffee. The long bakery case running through the center of the interior is generously stocked with many kinds of bread. Since the space itself is so large, the bakery case is set up as a long stretch that feels like part of the café rather than crammed into one corner like a small bakery.

It's fun to walk around slowly with a tray, picking out what you want. Each piece of bread is fairly large, so it's good for sharing one of each with your drink. One catch: if you go too late, the bread sells out. We went around 2pm and most of the bread was already gone.

One of MUG's most famous bakery items is the cinnamon roll. Apparently the composition of the cinnamon roll changes slightly depending on the season and ingredients used. The outside is lightly baked with a nutty flavor while the inside stays moist, and the distinctive scent of cinnamon spreads naturally through the bread.

Besides the cinnamon roll, there's a good range of cakes, desserts, and other bakery items to choose from. I'd recommend picking a bakery item or cake to go with your coffee rather than just drinking coffee alone.

Above all, where you sit to eat matters a lot here. We sat where the water feature and green scenery were visible out the window, and the time spent eating dessert while watching the rain was really nice. Pick your bakery item, order it, sit by the window with your coffee, walk back through the gallery to look at the art again in between, and once the rain lets up, take a walk in the outdoor garden — you can easily stay for a long while. So it feels less like visiting one café and more like a complex space where you enjoy exhibitions, bakery, garden, and walking all together.

## How did the drinks and desserts at MUG taste?

Since the desserts tend to be sweet, we picked the americano as our drink. It's clean and easy to drink, which paired especially well with the cinnamon roll and cake. Taking a bite of sweet dessert and then a sip of americano cleared the sweetness from your mouth each time, making you keep reaching for more. The black mug also fit MUG's overall mood well. Slowly sipping a warm americano while watching the rain fall outside — this really is the best kind of time on a rainy day.

The avocado smoothie we also ordered has a soft pale-green look. It comes filled to the top of the cup, creamy just like in the photos. Rather than being brightly refreshing like a typical fruit smoothie, it centers on avocado's soft, nutty flavor. The texture was quite thick and rich, so it felt like eating a light dessert as much as drinking a beverage. If you prefer creamy and smooth flavors over overly sweet ones, this will suit you well. It was also a good option to order when visiting with someone who doesn't drink coffee.

Of the bakery items we ordered this time, the lemon cream cheese cinnamon roll stood out visually the most. A generous layer of yellow lemon cream covers the large cinnamon roll, topped with dried lemon slices — the moment it lands on the table, you reach for your camera first.

Taking a bite, you first get the fragrant cinnamon flavor and soft cream cheese, followed by a bright lemon tartness. With a regular cinnamon roll the sweetness can sometimes feel a bit heavy partway through, but adding lemon makes the flavor much fresher. The nuttiness of the cream cheese and the brightness of the lemon balance each other out, so it was easier to eat than expected. The bread itself was moist inside, pairing well with the cream. Since the cinnamon roll is MUG's signature item, I'd recommend trying at least one on your first visit.

We also ordered the lamington cake, square-shaped and fully coated in coconut flakes. On top, a round dollop of white cream and a red cherry make it look classic yet cute. Placed next to the lemon cream cheese cinnamon roll, the contrast in mood made for nice photos too.

Cutting it with a fork, the cake sponge is soft, and the coconut coating adds a distinctive nutty texture as you chew. It's sweet, but the plainness of the coconut kept it from feeling cloying. It paired especially well with the americano. Ordering the bright, showy lemon cream cheese cinnamon roll alongside the nutty, soft lamington cake and sharing both gave a nice contrast in flavor — ordering both together was a good call.

## Is MUG a good rainy-day date course in Eonyang?

MUG was a bit different from the typical large Ulsan café. It's not just about being big and having a wide bakery selection — the gallery, architecture, garden, walking paths, and bakery all connect naturally within one space. Casually enjoying the artwork right as you walk in, choosing a bakery item you like inside, then sitting by the picture window looking out at the mountains and garden made for an even better rainy-day date.

Once the rain stops, you can also take a slow walk around the outdoor garden and ecological pond. It's a bit removed from downtown Ulsan, but that's exactly what makes the surrounding scenery so relaxed. If you're planning a drive toward Eonyang or Ulju, it's worth making the destination on purpose.

When you're stuck figuring out where to go on a rainy day in Ulsan, MUG has enough to see and enough space to stay in just indoors. Look at art in the gallery, enjoy bakery items and coffee, and watch the rainy mountains through the huge picture window — two or three hours pass in no time. If you're looking for a place to visit on a rainy day in Ulsan, an Eonyang date course, or a large Ulsan bakery café, I'd recommend MUG. It's a place with real reason to linger a little longer, rather than just grabbing coffee and leaving.
