## In short

Dongyang Baekban is a Korean restaurant in a hanok tile-roof house near the main street of Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju. Visiting on a weekday around 6pm, the writer ordered sumi dakbokkeumtang (chicken stew) for 2-3 people at ₩28,000, pork kimchi dureuchigi (stir-fry) at ₩27,000, plus soy-egg rice and pollack roe rice, and both mains came in a sweet-spicy sauce mild enough for spice-shy eaters. If you like sweet-spicy seasoning and a big lineup of signature rice bowls, Dongyang Baekban fits the bill.

A Korean restaurant worth trying on Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil — Dongyang Baekban's Hwangridan-gil branch. Dakdoritang (spicy chicken stew), Korean beef intestine hot pot, and all sorts of rice dishes too!

## Location — a hanok tile-roof house near the main Hwangridan-gil street

If you're visiting Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil and looking for Korean food, I'd recommend checking out Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch, close to the main street! ☺️ It's right across from Skunkworks Café, in a pretty hanok tile-roof house.

Parking is such a pain when you go for a meal on Hwangridan-gil, but this Korean restaurant Dongyang Baekban had a public lot really close by — such a relief!! We got lucky with an open spot, parked, and walked over haha. Visited on a weekday around 6pm.

## Atmosphere — a modern interior divided into room-like spaces

The interior is super clean and modern, which somehow makes the Korean food feel even more delicious. It feels divided into room-like spaces, so it's great for a cozy meal with family or friends, and would work well as a date spot too.

## What we ordered — sumi dakbokkeumtang and pork kimchi dureuchigi

Every time I passed by, the chicken stew on the poster looked so good, so I was curious haha. So I started with that first 〰️ Sumi dakbokkeumtang, serves 2-3, ₩28,000. There were so many menu items I agonized over it, and ended up adding pork kimchi dureuchigi too!! Pork kimchi dureuchigi is ₩27,000.

## So many rice bowl choices, almost like signature dishes

Take a look at the Dongyang Baekban menu ~~ true to a Hwangridan-gil Korean restaurant, the list of dishes goes on and on lol. The mains are quite varied, but what I really loved was the huge range of rice bowls haha. Regular plain rice is everywhere, but here you get caviar rice, pollack roe rice, ttangcho rice and more as if they were signature dishes ~ They all looked so good I nearly had decision paralysis ㅠㅠ If you're visiting with kids, there's also soy-egg rice, yukjeon (pan-fried beef), cheese ddeokgalbi, grilled mackerel and other side dishes, so you can visit without worrying too much!!

![Side dishes: seasoned soybeans, bean sprouts, pickled garlic stems, and diced radish kimchi](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwangnidangil-pork-kimchi-duruchigi-dinner/hwangnidangil-pork-kimchi-duruchigi-dinner-15-1iev4-900.webp)

### Side dishes

The side dishes were seasoned soybeans, seasoned bean sprouts, pickled garlic stems, and diced radish kimchi ~ The bean sprouts were crunchy and delicious, and the pickled garlic stems paired really well with the chicken stew!! The diced radish kimchi had that deeply fermented taste..

### Soy-egg rice ₩3,500 / pollack roe rice ₩5,500

Pollack roe rice, ₩5,500

![Rice served with a side bowl of seaweed flakes](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwangnidangil-pork-kimchi-duruchigi-dinner/hwangnidangil-pork-kimchi-duruchigi-dinner-18-1vq15-900.webp)

![Soy-egg rice mixed with seaweed flakes](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwangnidangil-pork-kimchi-duruchigi-dinner/hwangnidangil-pork-kimchi-duruchigi-dinner-19-13s0v-900.webp)

![Pollack roe rice mixed and ready to eat](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwangnidangil-pork-kimchi-duruchigi-dinner/hwangnidangil-pork-kimchi-duruchigi-dinner-20-1qy42-900.webp)

When you order rice, they serve you a bowl of seaweed flakes on the side — you scoop some over and mix it in haha. The soy-egg rice tasted like nostalgia and I enjoyed it a lot; I'm not that big on pollack roe so my companion ate the myeongnanbap, and said it was delicious 😛👍🏻

![A full plate of Dongyang Baekban's pork kimchi dureuchigi](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwangnidangil-pork-kimchi-duruchigi-dinner/hwangnidangil-pork-kimchi-duruchigi-dinner-21-115ln-900.webp)

![Pork kimchi dureuchigi with generous tofu and kimchi](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwangnidangil-pork-kimchi-duruchigi-dinner/hwangnidangil-pork-kimchi-duruchigi-dinner-22-1qzro-900.webp)

## How does the pork kimchi dureuchigi taste?

While we were mixing the rice that came out first and waiting, the pork kimchi dureuchigi arrived. It had a generous amount of kimchi, and the sauce was sweet and spicy! The tofu was savory too and went really well with the kimchi.

![Sumi dakbokkeumtang with potatoes](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwangnidangil-pork-kimchi-duruchigi-dinner/hwangnidangil-pork-kimchi-duruchigi-dinner-23-13ylr-900.webp)

## Sumi vs. teukmi dakbokkeumtang — what's the difference?

The one I was most curious to try was the sumi dakbokkeumtang. The difference between sumi and teukmi versions: sumi has potatoes in it, while teukmi is based on tomato and cheese, so pick according to your taste ☺️

![Close-up of sumi dakbokkeumtang with generous glass noodles](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwangnidangil-pork-kimchi-duruchigi-dinner/hwangnidangil-pork-kimchi-duruchigi-dinner-24-1qybp-900.webp)

The sumi dakbokkeumtang we ordered came loaded with plenty of potato and chicken 👍🏻 Oh! And the glass noodles were super generous too lol, so glass noodle lovers, this is highly recommended. The chicken was also boneless, so there was no hassle picking meat off bones, which was so nice lol. The sauce wasn't extremely spicy, so even spice-shy eaters can give it a try without worry! The sauce has that same sweetness as the dureuchigi too. If you like sweet seasoning, I fully recommend this Hwangridan-gil Korean restaurant, Dongyang Baekban 〰️

If you're looking for a good Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil, Dongyang Baekban's Hwangridan-gil branch has such a wide variety of Korean dishes — I recommend giving it a visit ❕
