## In short

Izakaya Goko Gangnam Sinnonhyeon Branch is a Japanese-style pub between Gangnam and Sinnonhyeon stations in Seoul. We shared a 66,000 won sashimi-and-seven-skewer set with an 8,000 won chilled tokkuri. Izakaya Goko is a great pick for a quiet drink and conversation for two.

Chacha and I finally made dinner plans after ages and headed over toward Gangnam. The weather was cool too—just perfect for a drink.

## A Japanese-style pub between Gangnam and Sinnonhyeon stations

As soon as we arrived in front of the building, the sign had such a distinctly Japanese feel that my anticipation shot right up. This atmospheric Japanese-style pub sits on the main street between Gangnam and Sinnonhyeon stations, so it was easy to get to.

Once we were seated, we immediately looked through the menu. That day, we ordered the sashimi set for two, the seven-kind yakitori (Japanese grilled skewers) set, and chilled tokkuri (a sake flask). The sashimi-for-two and seven-kind yakitori set was ₩66,000, and the tokkuri was ₩8,000. The price was not bad either—just the right amount for two people to share.

## What was the atmosphere inside like?

The interior was truly Japanese izakaya (Japanese pub) through and through. The lighting was softly dim, which was easy on the eyes, and there was enough space between tables to talk without worrying about the people beside us. Wood accents throughout made it feel as if we had traveled to Japan just by sitting there. The music was quiet and gentle too, making it a perfect setting for drinks and conversation. A Gangnam izakaya!

## Chilled tokkuri and sashimi together

### Chilled tokkuri, ₩8,000

The chilled tokkuri went down cleanly from the very first glass. It reminded me all over again how well sashimi and sake go together. The clean flavor of the raw fish met sake’s subtle sweetness, leaving my mouth feeling fresh the whole time. Maybe because it was nicely chilled, its aroma was not overpowering either—just right.

The sashimi set for two came out first, with six kinds on one platter: salmon, sea bream, flounder, sweet shrimp, abalone, and tuna.

> Sometimes you crave meat, but there are days like this when seafood is exactly what you want.

### Six kinds of sashimi

The salmon was cut thick, so its rich, savory flavor spread out with every bite.

The sea bream had a slight chew to it, and the more I chewed, the more its delicate, clean flavor came through.

The sweet shrimp had a definite sweetness, so it was good on its own, but paired with the tokkuri, that sweetness felt even more pronounced.

The tuna had a soft, melting texture, making it perfect to eat toward the end.

The flounder, perhaps because it was sliced thinly, seemed to melt softly in my mouth and had a clean umami flavor.

The rest paired well with the tokkuri too. The abalone’s springy texture stood out most, and with every chew, a subtle ocean aroma came through.

## How was the seven-kind yakitori?

The yakitori came with seven kinds in total, including pork neck, chicken heart, chicken thigh, and chicken breast.

There were pork neck, chicken heart, chicken thigh, chicken breast, and more. The pork neck was lightly charred outside, with a deep smoky flavor, while the inside stayed juicy. The chicken heart had a clear springy texture, and its distinctive nutty aroma emerged more with every chew—perfect drinking food. The chicken thigh had crisp skin and tender meat, with juices bursting out in every bite.

I worried the chicken breast might be dry, but it was more moist than expected, so it was easy to eat. A subtle charcoal aroma had soaked in, and I kept reaching for another skewer.

Yakitori tastes best while it is hot, and it held its temperature well, so we could enjoy every skewer warm through the last one. The smoky flavor and juices worked so well together that it was seriously delicious with a glass of tokkuri!

## An evening alternating sashimi and yakitori

Alternating between sashimi and yakitori while sipping tokkuri that night was definitely a great combination. The sashimi tasted fresh, and the yakitori had a clear char-grilled flavor.

A Gangnam izakaya that is great with sashimi too! The atmosphere was quiet and calm, making it nice for conversation, and it was just the right place for Chacha and me to eat and talk together. If you are looking for an izakaya in Gangnam, I would recommend Izakaya Goko Gangnam Sinnonhyeon Branch (이자카야 고코 강남신논현점). Anyone who loves the sashimi-and-sake combination should be satisfied here.
