## In short

Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch is a Korean restaurant tucked in a hanok house down an inner alley of Hwangridan-gil, Gyeongju. Visiting right at weekday opening, three of us shared the Sumi dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken) set with caviar-topped rice, pollack roe rice, yukjeon (pan-fried beef), and sikhye (sweet rice punch), and still couldn't finish it. A good pick for travelers who want to try several Korean dishes in small portions at once.

This time I wanted to try something a bit unusual in Hwangridan-gil, so I went to Dongyang Baekban. You can't visit Gyeongju without stopping by Hwangridan-gil, right?! Even in the hot early-autumn weather, the street was packed with people. (Everyone's so young these days haha)

There are plenty of cafés and dessert shops, but when you're traveling, what you eventually crave is a solid Korean meal! Rice power to keep your travel stamina up 🍚!

Let me introduce a pretty spread of Korean food, a nice hanok atmosphere, and a meal I really enjoyed. Cue drumroll ☝🏻

## How to find Dongyang Baekban in Hwangridan-gil

![Exterior of Dongyang Baekban down an inner alley of Hwangridan-gil](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-02-k5die-966.webp)

Dongyang Baekban sits in an inner alley near the center of Hwangridan-gil, so it's easy to pop in for a meal while you're out sightseeing.

![Alley entrance near the CU convenience store on Hwangridan-gil's main street](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-03-hoxc8-966.webp)

When you spot the CU convenience store and MG Woosung Saemaul Geumgo on the main Hwangridan-gil street, turn into the alley by the CU.

Dongyang Baekban is located right across from Cheomseongdae Chocolate!

There's no big sign — just look for the hanok with a grassy yard and a round bird-illustration signboard.

### Where to park?

Given the nature of Hwangridan-gil, few restaurants have dedicated parking, so it's best to use the nearby public parking lots. I visited on a weekday morning and found alley parking near empty storefronts was possible too.

## An interior that keeps the charm of a hanok house

![Path into the hanok building of Dongyang Baekban with its grassy yard](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-06-qcwuk-966.webp)

The moment you step in, you feel the warm hanok atmosphere. They kept the charm of the traditional house while giving the interior a clean, modern redo — it's oddly cozy, like being at your grandmother's house, mixed with a trendy new-style interior that's really appealing. So MZ-coded!! (says a self-proclaimed MZ generation member)

![Interior of Dongyang Baekban showing the warm wood tones](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-07-1guwa-966.webp)

Dongyang Baekban feels like it makes use of an old house in a way that really fits the Hwangridan-gil vibe, so the atmosphere is clearly different from a typical restaurant.

Inside, they kept the warm tones of the wood while adding large windows on every wall, letting natural light in for a cozy feel.

![Hanok restaurant seating with large windows letting in natural light](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-08-2kxq9-966.webp)

A lot of places on Hwangridan-gil have an overly forced, artificial hanok look, but this space felt natural and comfortable, with a real sense of travel — the kind of place you want to linger in.

There are partitioned seating areas, so even with a group it was easy to focus on the meal. Baby chairs are available too, so it's worth noting if you're looking for a family-friendly spot with a baby.

### Weekday opening rush — any wait?

I went right at opening on a weekday and got seated immediately, but after that customers kept streaming in until the tables filled up. During peak lunch hours, there might be a wait.

## What's in the Sumi dakbokkeumtang set

![Menu board listing Dongyang Baekban's signature dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-09-j727h-966.webp)

Dongyang Baekban, a Korean restaurant on Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil, is known for main dishes like dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken) and gopchang jeongol (beef tripe hot pot), along with distinctive rice dishes like pollack roe rice and caviar rice.

![Description of what's included in the Sumi dakbokkeumtang set](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-10-70odv-966.webp)

What we ordered was the Sumi dakbokkeumtang set. It comes with dakbokkeumtang plus caviar rice + pollack roe rice + yukjeon (or seasoned crab) + sikhye all at once, so you don't have to pick each item separately — you get a generous spread!

### Distinctive rice and side dishes

![Side dishes of garlic scapes, bean sprouts, seasoned soybeans, and kkakdugi](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-11-10460-966.webp)

Simple side dishes came out — garlic scapes, bean sprouts, seasoned soybeans, and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi). The taste was fine overall, the kind of thing you pick at between bites. One small letdown: the kkakdugi was a bit mushy, which caught me off guard 😂

![Round, distinctively plated rice dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-12-1t5pz-966.webp)

These round little rice bowls, shaped and colored like scoops of ice cream, look really unique!

![Caviar rice topped with herring roe and black caviar](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-13-1ixtu-966.webp)

Caviar rice. Even the rice bowl itself is cute and round — topped with a generous scoop of scallions and gim jaban (seasoned seaweed flakes), then a round scoop of orange herring roe like an ice cream scoop, with black caviar on top. The roe has that signature popping texture with a nutty flavor, and surprisingly the taste wasn't too strong, so it paired well with the dakbokkeumtang.

![Pollack roe rice topped with low-sodium roe and cheongyang chili](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-14-1qaia-966.webp)

Pollack roe rice. Apparently it's made with low-sodium pollack roe mixed with cheongyang chili and a touch of sesame oil for aroma. The salty roe flavor with a little kick from the chili was delicious on its own, and it also went well mixed with the dakbokkeumtang sauce. Pretty in shape and color too — great for photos!

Oh, and one more thing!! The rice portions are actually pretty generous! Don't underestimate them just because they look small haha.

### Yukjeon instead of seasoned crab

![Plate of yukjeon served in place of seasoned crab](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-15-1ji0m-966.webp)

And the yukjeon (pan-fried beef) that came with it 🥩 — this was delicious. The set normally includes seasoned raw crab, but it was swapped for yukjeon because they'd run out.

![Yukjeon served with a side of chive salad](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-16-18er8-966.webp)

Honestly, I think it turned out even better this way. With so many salty, spicy dishes on the table, this savory, mild dish felt like a nice reset for the palate! Eaten warm, it was soft and nutty, and even better paired with the chive salad!

## The main event, Sumi dakbokkeumtang — how spicy is it?

![Pot of Sumi dakbokkeumtang before it starts boiling](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-17-1slk0-966.webp)

The main dish, Sumi dakbokkeumtang. Chicken and vegetables mingling in a spicy-sweet sauce made it great to eat with rice — and despite the fiery red color, the flavor was surprisingly mild. Totally manageable for those who can't handle much spice!

![Dakbokkeumtang topped with a soft-boiled egg](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-18-n48ze-966.webp)

![Dakbokkeumtang simmering at the table](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-19-1gc07-966.webp)

![Broth with sumi potatoes and vegetables in the dakbokkeumtang](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-20-12ejo-966.webp)

Red broth with a yellow soft-boiled egg. They clearly put a lot of thought into the colors and plating.

You get to simmer it a bit more at the table, so it stays piping hot until the end.

They said it's made with boneless chicken simmered in a mix of herbal broth and beef bone broth, loaded with sumi potatoes and vegetables — the longer it simmers, the deeper and richer the flavor gets.

![Dakbokkeumtang with added udon noodles and glass noodles](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-21-etgl8-966.webp)

Since it's boneless, the table stays clean and it's easy to eat neatly. We even added udon noodles, so slurping the glass noodles and udon together, then eating the tender chicken, made for a really nice balance in the mouth. Hehe.

A big scoop of caviar rice topped with chicken on top.

![A spoonful of caviar rice topped with chicken](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-22-oa19o-966.webp)

There were three of us eating, but the set portion was surprisingly large despite how it looked — we ate until we were stuffed and, oof, still ended up leaving some. Don't be fooled by the cute round ceramic bowls — don't underestimate the portions! Haha.

## Final thoughts

![Table set with the full Dongyang Baekban meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok/gyeongju-hwangnidangil-set-menu-hanok-23-7r7z8-966.webp)

What I liked about the Sumi dakbokkeumtang set at Dongyang Baekban was being able to enjoy several Korean dishes at once instead of just one. If you're craving a solid Korean meal in Gyeongju rather than Western food or dessert, Dongyang Baekban could be a good choice.

If you like tasting a little of many dishes, I'd recommend ordering the Sumi dakbokkeumtang set like I did! I personally love dakdoritang, so now I'm curious about their tomato cheese dakbokkeumtang too and want to come back!

If you're looking for a Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju for a clean, generous meal, give this place a try. :)
