Finding somewhere near Gasan Digital Complex where the whole family can eat together, meat-eaters and non-meat-eaters alike, narrows the options fast. Last weekend I went with my mom, older sister and younger sister to Gim Myeongtae Spicy Braised Short Ribs Gasan Branch, a spot with a solid local reputation in Gasan-dong. ## Why Gim Myeongtae is worth a trip in Gasan-dong

We parked and went in not long after opening, so there weren't many customers yet, and I was surprised by how big the place actually was. There were plenty of tables where the four of us could sit comfortably. Since my sister doesn't really eat meat, our options are usually limited, but here the fish and seafood dishes — braised pollock, cuttlefish — were just as varied as the galbijjim, so there was nothing to agonize over on the menu.

Once seated, we opened the menu to find braised pollock and spicy galbijjim as the mains, alongside meal dishes like cuttlefish stew and dried pollock hangover soup. Basic side dishes like bean sprout soup and pickled radish come standard, with a self-serve bar for refills. The galbijjim can be adjusted across 4 spice levels from mild to very spicy, and there's a separate hotpot galbijjim for solo diners at ₩17,000. Arrive before 3pm and every dish comes with free hotpot rice — since we timed our visit around lunch, we got that too.

We ordered two spicy braised pollock lunch specials at ₩13,000 each, dried pollock hangover soup at ₩10,000, and cuttlefish and dried radish greens stew (lunch special) at ₩16,000. The dishes started coming out one by one.

### Spicy braised pollock (lunch special), 13,000 won

Thanks to my sister, I eat braised pollock pretty often, so honestly I was already a bit tired of this dish. I was banking more on the hangover soup and the cuttlefish stew instead.

But the sauce here turned out to be way better than I expected. Not too harsh, just a touch spicy, seasoned just right — even the pollock stew I thought I was sick of had me reaching back in.

I scooped rice from the hotpot and even picked at the crispy scorched rice at the bottom, eating way more than usual. When the stew's this good, the rice naturally follows.

I normally love dried radish greens, but lately my mom keeps spitting out anything that catches in her mouth, which worries me, so I didn't order a separate greens dish and figured I'd be satisfied with the greens mixed into the cuttlefish stew.

One bite in, though, the greens were so soft and easy to chew that I regretted not ordering them separately. My mom was pretty disappointed too. Next time I want to try the galbijjim, so I kept an eye on that section of the menu — there's a solo-sized hotpot galbijjim, which I'm planning to try on my next visit.

Since everything else was heavily seasoned, I figured we'd need some broth, so I ordered the dried pollock hangover soup. It tasted like the pollock soup everyone knows, but the broth was savory and delicious — having one soup dish on the table really did help like I thought it would.

We visited right after opening and had no trouble finding a seat, but as lunchtime approached, the tables filled up fast — clearly a well-known spot in this neighborhood.

Even I, someone already tired of braised pollock, ended up reaching for my chopsticks again thanks to that sauce — this visit actually made me like pollock stew all over again. Stumbling onto a great restaurant without much expectation is honestly one of the best feelings.

If I'd known about this place back when I worked in the Gasan-dong area, I would have come every lunchtime. It's not somewhere I can visit often these days, but it's the kind of Gasan-dong restaurant that'll come to mind again whenever I need somewhere to eat with family members who don't eat meat.
