## In short

Jeungpyeong Son Dubu Gamnamujip is a hanok Korean restaurant on Gwangjang-ro in Jeungpyeong-eup, Chungbuk, specializing in handmade tofu. The writer and her husband had lunch there, ordering the handmade tofu hot pot at 17,000 won per person with an extra buckwheat jeon (savory pancake), and fell for the tofu-kimchi banchan that arrived before the main dish. The broth is mild and clean rather than salty, so Jeungpyeong Son Dubu Gamnamujip suits anyone who wants a gentle, homestyle Korean lunch in Jeungpyeong.

Today my husband and I went for lunch in Jeungpyeong at Gamnamujip. I'd been craving a hot bowl of handmade tofu hot pot, but the moment we arrived, it was the building itself — not the food — that won me over first, haha.

When old houses get remodeled, I much prefer places that keep their original character instead of turning into something brand new.

## The hanok courtyard at Jeungpyeong Son Dubu Gamnamujip

Gamnamujip was exactly my style. With its tiled roof, spacious courtyard, big persimmon tree, and even earthenware jars lined up, it felt like visiting a cozy old hanok.

![Full view of the hanok-style courtyard at Gamnamujip](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeungpyeong-hanok-handmade-tofu-hotpot-lunch/jeungpyeong-hanok-handmade-tofu-hotpot-lunch-07-1ifbt-966.webp)

I'd already liked the look of it from photos before going, but seeing it in person made me like it even more ^^ Near the entrance there was even a tuho (traditional arrow-throwing) game,

![Tuho arrow-throwing game and letter-writing spot near the entrance](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeungpyeong-hanok-handmade-tofu-hotpot-lunch/jeungpyeong-hanok-handmade-tofu-hotpot-lunch-08-urafr-966.webp)

and a fun little spot where you can write today's thoughts down and have them mailed to you once the persimmons ripen — my husband and I had fun poking around it.

## What are the interior and seating like?

Walking into Gamnamujip, the hanok atmosphere from outside carries naturally into the interior.

The long hallway in particular was really pretty.

![Long hallway with rafters and round lighting](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeungpyeong-hanok-handmade-tofu-hotpot-lunch/jeungpyeong-hanok-handmade-tofu-hotpot-lunch-10-113st-966.webp)

They kept the ceiling rafters and wooden pillars intact and hung round lights, so the old-house feel blended nicely with a clean, tidy look. The dining space is divided into room-like sections, with everything from 4-person tables to seating for larger groups.

So it seemed like a good fit whether you want a quiet Jeungpyeong lunch for two, a family meal out, or a visit with your parents.

Little pots of plants and ceramics sat by the windows, along with old furniture and persimmon-themed decor, so there was plenty to look at around every corner.

### Tofu made by hand at the restaurant

On one side, there was a space for making tofu visible through a large glass window. According to the signage inside, Gamnamujip uses 100% domestic soybeans — baektae and seoritae varieties — and states it uses no chemical additives as a principle.

> Honesty starts with a single block of tofu

That line stuck with me. Instead of plain white rice, they even serve turmeric rice made with Jeungpyeong Jangtteul rice and domestic turmeric — it felt like they were putting thought into the whole meal, not just the tofu.

## Menu and prices: handmade tofu hot pot, 17,000 won per person

Looking over the menu, alongside their signature handmade tofu hot pot, there were plenty of hearty Korean dishes to choose from. The handmade tofu hot pot is ₩17,000 per person.

It's their signature hot pot, made daily with freshly made tofu and broth. Handmade mandu (dumplings) also caught my eye as a good side dish, but this time we added buckwheat jeon (savory pancake) to the tofu hot pot instead. If you want a hot soup dish alongside a few other things for a Jeungpyeong lunch, this would be a great pick.

## The banchan, starting with the tofu-kimchi

![Table filled with banchan at Jeungpyeong Gamnamujip](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeungpyeong-hanok-handmade-tofu-hotpot-lunch/jeungpyeong-hanok-handmade-tofu-hotpot-lunch-20-brsva-966.webp)

![Kimchi, namul, and tofu-kimchi banchan arranged together](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeungpyeong-hanok-handmade-tofu-hotpot-lunch/jeungpyeong-hanok-handmade-tofu-hotpot-lunch-21-14qkj-966.webp)

Before the main dish even arrived, the banchan (side dishes) here were genuinely impressive. As the table filled up one dish at a time, my husband and I kept saying 'wow, there are so many side dishes' while checking each one out, haha. Kimchi, namul (seasoned vegetables), mushrooms, salads — with so many varieties, the table was already full just with banchan.

The one that really won me over was tofu-kimchi: thick slices of handmade tofu topped with a piece of kimchi. I was completely hooked, lol.

The mild tofu and the kimchi went so well together that I kept reaching for more before the main dish even showed up. Tasting each banchan one by one was part of the fun, too — if you like tidy, well-made Korean food when looking for a Jeungpyeong restaurant, this part alone should satisfy you.

## How the handmade tofu hot pot broth tastes

![Handmade tofu hot pot with mushrooms and napa cabbage](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeungpyeong-hanok-handmade-tofu-hotpot-lunch/jeungpyeong-hanok-handmade-tofu-hotpot-lunch-22-oek6j-966.webp)

Finally, the handmade tofu hot pot arrived! Big chunks of handmade tofu, mushrooms, napa cabbage, chives, and more filled the pot to the brim. Watching it bubble away, I could already tell we were in for a proper hot meal.

Once I actually tasted the broth, I liked it even more because it wasn't heavily seasoned. Instead of salty or sharp, the broth was clean and mild, which made me keep spooning it up. Scooping up a generous mix of the thick tofu, mushrooms, and vegetables in one spoonful felt comfortably filling. Eating it slowly with my husband, I thought this kind of dish makes a really nice lunch.

## Adding a buckwheat jeon

![Buckwheat jeon rolled with kimchi and sliced](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeungpyeong-hanok-handmade-tofu-hotpot-lunch/jeungpyeong-hanok-handmade-tofu-hotpot-lunch-23-jgryt-966.webp)

We also added buckwheat jeon. It came as thinly fried buckwheat pancake rolled up with kimchi inside, cut into bite-sized pieces.

![Close-up of the rolled buckwheat jeon](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeungpyeong-hanok-handmade-tofu-hotpot-lunch/jeungpyeong-hanok-handmade-tofu-hotpot-lunch-24-1f3dq-966.webp)

It looked different from what I'd pictured as buckwheat jeon, so it caught my eye as soon as it arrived, haha. Between a spoonful of hot pot broth, a bite of buckwheat jeon, and banchan one after another, the two of us really ate a hearty meal.

### Free soy milk for writing a review

It felt like a waste to just leave after the meal, so I wrote a thorough review — and got some soy milk for it, haha. After eating my way through handmade tofu, tofu-kimchi, and the tofu hot pot, finishing with soy milk made me feel like I'd really had my fill of soybeans today, lol.

## Is Jeungpyeong Son Dubu Gamnamujip worth it for lunch?

Gamnamujip suited my taste not just for the food but for the hanok space itself. I loved that they kept the old house's character without changing it too much, and with so many kinds of banchan, my husband and I had fun trying one after another. I especially fell hard for the tofu-kimchi, haha.

The handmade tofu hot pot isn't heavily seasoned and the broth is mild, so if you prefer comforting Korean food over anything too intense, this could be a great Jeungpyeong lunch option.

This time my husband and I had the tofu hot pot and buckwheat jeon, so next time I'm curious about the handmade mandu too. And most of all, I need to come back with friends for kongguksu (chilled soy milk noodles), which I love — since they make handmade tofu from domestic soybeans, I'm already curious how their kongguksu turns out ^^ That was our trip to Jeungpyeong Son Dubu Gamnamujip: a look around the hanok grounds and a hearty, mild bowl of handmade tofu hot pot ^^
