It had been a while since I’d had udon, so I looked around and came across this great spot. I really found the right place! If you’re looking for a proper Japanese udon restaurant in Bongcheon-dong, definitely visit Kosi. It’s known for its bukkake udon, and after trying it myself, I understood why it has a reputation as a neighborhood udon favorite. It’s a Bongcheon-dong restaurant worth lining up for. There will probably be a wait at peak times. They even have outdoor waiting seats.

## Kosi Seoul National University Entrance Branch with a Japanese feel

The Japanese atmosphere hits you right from the entrance~ I went in feeling as though I were on a trip. Around lunchtime, seats fill up quickly with nearby office workers and local residents, so I recommend coming a little early if you’d like to take your time.

The interior isn’t huge, but it was neatly arranged, with a comfortable atmosphere for either a solo meal or a visit with company. There were plenty of tables for solo diners, plus tables for 2, 4, and 6 people. The space didn’t feel crowded and was fairly roomy. The staff were kind, so even on my first visit I had no trouble choosing from the menu, and the udon came out quickly enough to enjoy the meal without much concern about waiting. The prices also felt reasonable for an udon specialty restaurant, so adding one or two sides to an udon didn’t feel like too much. It seemed well suited to everything from dining alone to having a light drink with a meal, making it a good place to visit in lots of situations.

## How do you eat bukkake udon?

Bukkake udon takes its name from the Japanese word bukkake (ぶっかけ), meaning “to pour over.” It is made by pouring richly brewed broth over warm or cold noodles, then mixing in toppings such as grated daikon radish, scallions, and tempura crumbs. It is usually especially delicious served cold.

Unlike kake udon, where the noodles sit in broth, bukkake udon has less broth, so you can taste the noodles’ texture and aroma more intensely. Once you try it, you’ll probably think it’s on another level from the udon you’ve had before.

## Udon noodles that stayed firm to the last bite

The noodles were chewy on the outside while retaining a slight firm core within, giving them a lovely springy snap with every bite. The broth soaked into the noodles while that core remained intact, so the texture held up right through the final strand.

## Fried sides to have with the udon

Crispy outside and soft inside was a given, and the sight of cheese stretching out as soon as I took a bite was great too. The savory, nutty cheese and crisp batter were a combination that kept me reaching back for more.

The outside was crisp, while the sweet potato’s gentle natural sweetness came through inside, making it a nice palate-cleansing side among the savory dishes. Even though it was fried, its clean sweetness never felt greasy or heavy, so I could keep eating it comfortably.

## Tonkatsu that stayed crisp

I also added tonkatsu as a side. Despite being thick, it was still juicy, and its coating stayed crisp for a long time, so it was delicious right to the end. It was nicely balanced with the sauce too, letting the tonkatsu’s own flavor shine. With chewy noodles that fully capture what makes bukkake udon special, plus a side menu where nothing falls short—I strongly recommend Kosi if you’re looking for a Japanese udon restaurant in Bongcheon-dong. Anyone serious about noodles will be especially satisfied here. If you’re looking for a great Bongcheon-dong restaurant, be sure to try Kosi’s bukkake udon at least once!

It’s very close to Seoul National University Entrance Station. I visited by car and was able to park along the roadside.
