## In short

Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch is a Korean restaurant serving rice bowls and bibim noodles on Seojeon-ro in Jeonpo-dong, Busan, a short walk from Exit 8 of Seomyeon Station. Sharing the eggplant doenjang rice bowl, herring roe bibim noodles and grilled deodeok (bellflower root) with mushrooms over a couple's meal, the herring roe noodles were too sweet to suit our taste, while the eggplant rice bowl and the deodeok mushrooms both landed well. Everything at Hyangtaek leans a little sweet, but the eggplant doenjang bowl with grilled deodeok mushrooms is a combination worth coming back for.

I'd heard a while back that a Korean restaurant famous from Gyeongju opened in Seomyeon, and kept meaning to check it out — so while I was in Seomyeon anyway, I finally visited! Here's my honest review of Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch.

## Where is Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch, and what are the hours?

Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch is a Korean restaurant you'll spot if you keep walking straight from Exit 8 of Seomyeon Station. Hours are daily 11:00-20:00, break time is 15:30-17:00, and last order is 15:00 for lunch and 19:30 for dinner. Check their Instagram for more details!

Hyangtaek Jeonpo — the name that comes up under Jeonpo's Korean food category.

There was a menu item I'd been curious about for a while, so I'd been waiting for the chance to visit hahaha.

They have mackerel rice bowl too? But that's not my main pick today!!

Hyangtaek keeps showing up lately when you search for Jeonpo-dong restaurants! My personal pick is the eggplant doenjang rice bowl — it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say I came just for this one dish hahahaha.

## Inside Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch and how the handwritten waitlist works

Inside, Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch was neat and had quite a lot of tables! Also known as a lunch spot in Jeonpo-dong, they don't use Catch Table or Table-ing for waiting — it's handwritten instead! So make sure to check ahead before you go!

I only knew it as a Gyeongju restaurant, but apparently it started in Daegu? First time learning that hahahaha.

## What we ordered at Hyangtaek: eggplant doenjang rice bowl, herring roe bibim noodles, grilled deodeok

Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch has quite a variety of menu items — I ordered the eggplant doenjang rice bowl, and my boyfriend ordered the herring roe bibim noodles!

And on top of that, grilled deodeok mushrooms too,,!!

If you write a review on a weekday, the mushroom pancake is free (0 won) — definitely apply for that!

They had a little guide to eating Hyangtaek's food the tastiest way posted on every table? Nice touch — a restaurant that teaches you how to eat their food!!

## What comes with the meal: Hyangtaek's basic table setting

This is the basic side dish set at Hyangtaek, the Jeonpo-dong restaurant — doenjang soup and a bibim jeotgal (seasoned fermented seafood relish)? and lettuce stems, I forget the name,, anyway that's what came out hahahaha. Gim (seaweed) too!

The little dish in front of me was kelp vinegar, I think? They said to pour it over the eggplant rice bowl.

A full table of eggplant doenjang rice bowl, deodeok mushrooms, and herring roe bibim noodles.

## How do the herring roe bibim noodles taste? Too sweet for us

The herring roe bibim noodles at Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch looked pretty good visually. They mercilessly mash up the herring roe? Then mix it all together — done!

![Herring roe bibim noodles mixed with mashed roe](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-jeonpo-deodeok-mushroom-grill/hyangtaek-jeonpo-deodeok-mushroom-grill-14-18exg-900.webp)

There's meat in it too, and the portion is quite generous,, but it wasn't my taste! A little too sweet maybe? I'm not really a fan of sweet food so it was too sweet for me to finish,, my boyfriend isn't a big fan of sweet food either, and as soon as he tasted it he said 'this is kind of sweet,,' But that's just personal preference so >_<

![A generous bowl of herring roe bibim noodles with meat](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-jeonpo-deodeok-mushroom-grill/hyangtaek-jeonpo-deodeok-mushroom-grill-15-1kti1-900.webp)

### Grilled deodeok with mushrooms: gone in minutes

But with the deodeok mushrooms, the slightly sweet gochujang sauce was so good I inhalled it,,hahahahahahahaha. Guess the herring roe noodles just weren't for me.

And they told us to tear it lengthwise and mix it in, so I tried dipping and tearing with one hand, but it wouldn't tear hahahahaha. Trying so hard to tear it, I even lost focus in the photo hahahahahahaha.

## Why the eggplant doenjang rice bowl was the best dish of the meal

Eggplant doenjang rice bowl loaded with green onions, eggplant doenjang sauce, meat, fried batter bits, and more.

![Eggplant doenjang rice bowl topped with green onions, doenjang sauce, and fried batter bits](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-jeonpo-deodeok-mushroom-grill/hyangtaek-jeonpo-deodeok-mushroom-grill-17-1wyin-900.webp)

This is what it looks like all mixed together! This one's also a bit sweet, but it still suited my taste well! There's meat in it and quite a lot of green onions, so it felt like I got the veggies and the meat all covered,,,!

![Fully mixed eggplant doenjang rice bowl](https://img.superchart.com/images/hyangtaek-jeonpo-deodeok-mushroom-grill/hyangtaek-jeonpo-deodeok-mushroom-grill-18-1pm0x-900.webp)

There was a 'how to eat it best' tip on the side, so I put rice on gopchang gim (seasoned seaweed) and topped it with the bibim jeotgal,, but I forgot to take a photo hahahahaha. Anyway, finished the whole bowl happily!

## Is Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch worth a return visit?

It's a matter of taste, but overall the food was a bit on the sweet side. Still, it was tasty enough that I think I'll crave it again! Looking for a Korean rice bowl restaurant in Jeonpo-dong? Visit Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch and be sure to try the eggplant doenjang rice bowl with deodeok mushrooms!
