## In short

Hwamok Gaekjan (화목반점 객잔) is a Chinese restaurant on Daei-ro 189beon-gil near Pohang City Hall, known for stone-plate jjajang served bubbling on hot stone and kimchi pizza tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork topped with kimchi and cheese). On a weekday evening, two of us ordered the stone-plate jjajang and a small kimchi pizza tangsuyuk for 28,000 won, and the jjajang came loaded with shrimp, squid and pork. The noodles stayed warm to the last bite and paired well with the tangy-sweet tangsuyuk, making Hwamok Gaekjan a good choice for a team dinner or drinks near Pohang City Hall.

Looking for dinner near Pohang City Hall, my husband and I ended up at Hwamok Restaurant Gaekjan (화목반점 객잔). It hasn't been open long, but even on a weekday evening there were quite a few tables having office dinners — made me wonder if it's already word-of-mouth famous among the workers nearby.

We ordered stone-plate jjajang (black bean noodles) and, so nostalgic to see again, kimchi-pizza sweet and sour pork — aka kim-pi-tang. Bottom line: both came in generous portions and tasted great, so my husband and I happily ate away, saying we'd finally found a decent Chinese restaurant.

Hwamok Restaurant Gaekjan is close to Pohang City Hall, making it convenient for lunch or dinner, and there's also a bar-style seating area at the front. The interior is a bit cleaner and more casual than a typical neighborhood Chinese restaurant, so it works well for a meal or for drinks.

Outdoor-style drinking spots are trending now that the weather's nice, and one side of Hwamok has a bar table by an open window, which looked like a really nice atmosphere haha.

## What's on the menu at Hwamok Gaekjan?

Being a Chinese restaurant, Hwamok Restaurant Gaekjan's menu covers jjajang and jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) along with kim-pi-tang, sweet and sour pork, gganpunggi (spicy fried chicken), and palbochae (eight-treasure stir-fry). They also have a wide variety of Chinese liquor, so plenty of people seemed to be there for drinks.

## Stone-plate jjajang: sizzling from the moment it arrives

If you're at Hwamok, the dish that grabs your eye is the stone-plate jjajang. It didn't take long to arrive after ordering, and the sight of jjajang sizzling away on a huge hot stone was already appetite-stirring. It kept bubbling right up until it hit the table, and staying warm the whole time was the highlight.

Regular jjajang on a plain plate tends to cool down fast, but the stone-plate version stayed warm all the way through, which I loved.

Mixing the sauce through evenly, there was a generous amount of shrimp, squid and pork tucked between the noodles. It wasn't just a token amount of toppings — every bite or two brought seafood or meat along with it, which made it more filling. The jjajang sauce wasn't just sweet either; it was rich with a deep savory flavor.

The sauce coated the noodles well enough to keep them moist to the last bite, and thanks to the hot stone, the bottom got a slightly crisped texture near the end, which added another layer of fun. We both kept saying "the jjajang here is good" over and over while eating. And mixing in rice at the end — pure bliss;;

## Kimchi pizza tangsuyuk, small size for 28,000 won

The dish I was happiest to see that day was kimchi-pizza sweet and sour pork, kim-pi-tang. I used to eat it pretty often as a kid, but at some point it became hard to find places that serve it. So the moment I spotted kim-pi-tang on the menu, I ordered it without a second thought.

![Small size kimchi-pizza sweet and sour pork topped with cheese and kimchi](https://img.superchart.com/images/pohang-hwamok-banjeom-stone-plate-jjajang/pohang-hwamok-banjeom-stone-plate-jjajang-11-1mn3e-966.webp)

The small size of kim-pi-tang is ₩28,000. On top of the sweet and sour pork sits tangy kimchi, sweet sauce, and a generous layer of cheese — the visual was exactly how I remembered it. One bite in, and yeah, this combination is basically cheating. The sweetness of the sweet and sour pork gets a lift from the tangy kimchi, and the cheese stretches out while adding its own savory richness.

Sweet and sour pork can get greasy, but the kimchi keeps that in check, so I kept reaching for more. The portion was quite generous too — plenty for two people to share alongside the stone-plate jjajang. If there's leftovers, get it packed to go — they wrap it up really neatly haha.

Personally, I think kim-pi-tang works better as a beer snack than as a meal. The tangy-sweet sauce, cheese and crispy sweet and sour pork combo just naturally makes you crave something fizzy or a cold beer.

## Is Hwamok Gaekjan good for a team dinner or evening gathering?

We visited on a weekday evening, and there were more office-dinner tables than I expected. With plenty of drinking-friendly dishes like palbochae, yangjangpi (mustard sauce platter) and gganpunggi, plus meal options like jjajang and udon, it seemed like an easy place to bring a group. Even though it hasn't been open long, it already had plenty of customers — made me wonder, "has this already become a local favorite?" The food also came out fast, so there wasn't much of a wait.

## Looking for a Chinese restaurant near Pohang City Hall?

My husband and I tried the stone-plate jjajang and kim-pi-tang at Hwamok Restaurant Gaekjan, and both dishes had such distinct character that they stuck with me. The jjajang stayed warm to the end thanks to the sizzling stone plate, and I loved the generous mix of shrimp, squid and pork. Most of all, running into kim-pi-tang again after so long and having it taste exactly as tangy-sweet as I remembered made me even happier. The staff were also super friendly, which made the whole meal even better.

If you're near Pohang City Hall and want something a little different from plain jjajangmyeon, or you're looking for a place to eat and have a drink with a group in the evening, give Hwamok Restaurant Gaekjan a try. Next time, we're planning to try other dishes like gganpunggi or gochujapchae.
