## In short

Ppwang Mulhoe is a squid mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) restaurant in the Seolmeori mulhoe district at the end of Yeongildae Beach in Pohang, Gyeongbuk. On a hot day at lunch, the half-and-half mulhoe with squid and flounder cost 20,000 won and the fried squid 15,000 won, and the fried squid went into tteokbokki sauce from the self-service side dish bar, followed by a complimentary grilled flounder. Chewy squid and a well-stocked self bar made Ppwang Mulhoe a filling one-dish meal.

My husband and I had some errands in Pohang, and it was pretty hot from midday on. I wanted something cool but filling rather than hot food, so mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) naturally came to mind. Since we'd come all the way to Pohang, I wanted proper raw fish too, so I looked around Yeongildae and found Ppwang Mulhoe, a squid mulhoe specialist.

What we tried this time was the half-and-half mulhoe, which lets you enjoy both squid and chamgajami (olive flounder) together. The chewy squid and fresh flounder combo was great, but personally what stuck with me most was the self bar setup, something I hadn't seen at other mulhoe restaurants.

Pohang Yeongildae favorite Ppwang Mulhoe sits in the Pohang Seolmeori mulhoe district at the end of Yeongildae Beach. The parking lot is right in front but on the small side, so if there's no space, the public lot across the street works too. Being near Yeongildae, it's a great spot to pair with a walk along the water before or after the meal.

The interior was quite spacious and there was terrace seating too. Even on a weekday lunch it was completely full inside, which made me think — of course, it's popular as one of Pohang's go-to mulhoe restaurants.

## Ppwang Mulhoe menu and how to order at the table

Ppwang Mulhoe uses tablets at each table for ordering and payment. From basic squid mulhoe to flounder mulhoe, half-and-half mulhoe, squid pajeon (scallion pancake), and fried dishes, there was a wide range of squid-based food to try. They were also giving out fried squid as part of a review event, so keep that in mind!

## Self bar instead of fish stew: tteokbokki and squid radish soup

Most mulhoe restaurants usually serve a spicy fish stew alongside the meal, but Ppwang Mulhoe didn't have one separately. I was a little disappointed at first, but that changed once I saw the side dish self bar on one side of the restaurant. It had kimchi and various banchan (side dishes), plus tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), fried food, and squid radish soup, all available to help yourself to as much as you wanted.

![Self-service side dish bar with tteokbokki and banchan](https://img.superchart.com/images/pohang-yeongildae-mulhoe-squid-fritters-selfbar/pohang-yeongildae-mulhoe-squid-fritters-selfbar-10-1benr-900.webp)

When you're eating mulhoe and start craving something warm, a spoonful of squid radish soup hit the spot perfectly. Having tteokbokki on hand also seemed like a nice touch if you're visiting with kids, since there's something for everyone to pick from. It was also convenient not having to keep asking staff for more side dishes and just grabbing them yourself.

## Half-and-half mulhoe, 20,000 won: squid and flounder texture

My husband and I ordered the squid and flounder half-and-half mulhoe for ₩20,000. It came in a large brass bowl generously filled with squid, flounder sashimi, vegetables, and seaweed flakes, and just looking at it promised a refreshing meal. Trying the squid first, its signature chewy texture was fully there.

![Chopsticks holding a bite of chewy squid sashimi](https://img.superchart.com/images/pohang-yeongildae-mulhoe-squid-fritters-selfbar/pohang-yeongildae-mulhoe-squid-fritters-selfbar-14-15r1e-900.webp)

![Close-up of flounder sashimi in the mulhoe](https://img.superchart.com/images/pohang-yeongildae-mulhoe-squid-fritters-selfbar/pohang-yeongildae-mulhoe-squid-fritters-selfbar-15-127o6-900.webp)

It wasn't a tough, rubbery chew — the more you chewed, the springier it got, with a subtle sweetness. The flounder sashimi was fresh too, and it was nice alternating between the two. Getting two different textures in one bowl instead of just one type of fish, I was glad I'd gone with the half-and-half order.

![Sweet and tangy mulhoe broth mixed with sashimi](https://img.superchart.com/images/pohang-yeongildae-mulhoe-squid-fritters-selfbar/pohang-yeongildae-mulhoe-squid-fritters-selfbar-16-dg18g-900.webp)

The sauce has a sweet-and-tangy style. It's the kind of flavor that's perfect when you've lost your appetite in the heat, so I kept mixing the vegetables and sashimi together and reaching for more spoonfuls. Especially since it's served cold, this menu suits anyone looking for a hot-day lunch option in Pohang.

![Self bar somyeon noodles added to the mulhoe](https://img.superchart.com/images/pohang-yeongildae-mulhoe-squid-fritters-selfbar/pohang-yeongildae-mulhoe-squid-fritters-selfbar-17-28ept-900.webp)

![Rice mixed into the mulhoe to finish the meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/pohang-yeongildae-mulhoe-squid-fritters-selfbar/pohang-yeongildae-mulhoe-squid-fritters-selfbar-18-19zak-900.webp)

I love somyeon (thin wheat noodles), so I was extra happy that the self bar had some, haha. No need to feel shy about grabbing two servings! To finish, mix in some rice and enjoy every last bit.

## Fried squid, 15,000 won, dipped in tteokbokki sauce

It felt like a shame to leave after just the mulhoe, so we also ordered fried squid for ₩15,000. It came piled high on a plate, and instead of a thick, soggy batter, it was fried crisp. Inside the crunchy coating was squid, so biting in gave that same chewy texture again.

![A plate piled high with fried squid](https://img.superchart.com/images/pohang-yeongildae-mulhoe-squid-fritters-selfbar/pohang-yeongildae-mulhoe-squid-fritters-selfbar-19-1b88d-900.webp)

It's tasty on its own, but we tried dipping the fried squid into the tteokbokki sauce from the self bar. This combo worked surprisingly well. Sweet and spicy tteokbokki sauce plus crispy fried squid — it was almost like a bunsik (Korean street food) set, and we couldn't stop reaching for more, haha.

## The complimentary grilled flounder at Ppwang Mulhoe

The complimentary grilled flounder was also an unexpectedly welcome addition. One fish came per person, so my husband and I each had our own — golden and crisp on the outside, moist on the inside. After a cold dish like mulhoe, having a warm piece of grilled fish made for a nice pairing. The flesh flaked apart easily, good for putting over rice, and it was quite substantial for something free.

## Is Ppwang Mulhoe worth it for mulhoe near Yeongildae Beach?

My husband and I stopped by while running errands in Pohang, drawn in by the hot weather, and it turned out to be a more satisfying meal than expected. From the half-and-half mulhoe with chewy squid and fresh flounder to the crispy fried squid and moist grilled flounder, we got to try a good variety. Most of all, I loved being able to freely grab tteokbokki, fried food, various side dishes, and squid radish soup from the self bar.

If you want raw fish near Yeongildae in Pohang and a filling, cool bowl of mulhoe, remember Ppwang Mulhoe. Next time we're in Pohang, we'd love to stop by again for the half-and-half mulhoe and fried squid combo.
