## In short

Mayway is a Chinese restaurant in Gwangsan, Gwangju, known for house-made noodles and wok-fired dishes. We shared hot stone jjajang, assorted fried dumplings, and grapefruit cream shrimp, and found the food, atmosphere, and value all well balanced. Verdict: Start with the hot stone jjajang for a different lunch in Cheomdan.

## A Chinese restaurant in Cheomdan, Gwangju, that is great for groups

### Outside the restaurant

Mayway Gwangju Cheomdan Branch is in the Cheomdan area of Gwangju, so it is conveniently located for anyone looking for somewhere to eat nearby. If you have a lunch appointment in Cheomdan or are looking for a place to eat near work, Chinese food could be one option.

Especially at lunchtime, rather than choosing just one dish, groups often come in, order a variety of things, and share them, right? In that sense, Chinese restaurants have the advantage of offering plenty of choice. When looking for a good lunch spot in Gwangju Cheomdan, it is easy to think only of Korean food or grilled meat, but I wanted something a little different that day, so I chose Mayway Gwangju Cheomdan Branch. I checked out the sign and entrance before heading in.

### Inside and the house-made noodle specialty atmosphere

Once inside, I found tables laid out for a comfortable meal. Lunchtime is naturally when lots of office workers are on the move, so being able to sit and eat comfortably matters more than a cramped place or awkward spacing between tables, right?

Mayway Gwangju Cheomdan Branch also had the kind of Chinese restaurant atmosphere where you can order dishes one by one and share them. Looking at a Chinese restaurant menu is fun, too. From familiar dishes such as jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles) and jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) to dishes made for groups, there is plenty to order according to your party size—that is one of the charms of Chinese restaurants.

A search for good lunch spots in Gwangju Cheomdan brings up all kinds of restaurants, but when several people are dining together like we were that day, you start looking for somewhere with dishes to choose and share. Cheomdan's Mayway was just right for that.

One thing that stood out as I looked around was that it specializes in house-made noodles. There are surprisingly few well-known house-made noodle places when you search for Chinese restaurants in Gwangju, so that caught me off guard. Since noodle dishes are central to Chinese food, a house-made noodle specialty restaurant felt like an almost guaranteed good meal.

The fact that the dishes are cooked to order with wok-fired flavor also had me looking forward to eating. Chinese food is all about that smoky wok flavor, isn't it? Ho ho.

## An honest food review

![Sweet fried bites served before the meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-cheomdan-doljajang-mayway/gwangju-cheomdan-doljajang-mayway-05-16dkq-900.webp)

They brought out sweet fried bites before the meal, and even these were delicious. It made me think there must be a reason people have been flocking to this new hot spot lately.

![Basic Chinese restaurant accompaniments](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-cheomdan-doljajang-mayway/gwangju-cheomdan-doljajang-mayway-07-wur9e-900.webp)

With generous danmuji (yellow pickled radish) and kimchi, it felt a little more suited to Korean tastes than a completely classic Chinese restaurant, which I liked even more. It felt closer to a composed dish than simply Chinese food, and the value was good.

Even the basic accompaniments showed considerable skill. The staff were kind, too, and just as other blog reviews said, the food, atmosphere, and value felt like a perfectly matched trio.

## The most delicious dish: hot stone jjajang

![Hot stone jjajang with wok flavor and seafood](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-cheomdan-doljajang-mayway/gwangju-cheomdan-doljajang-mayway-09-175gu-900.webp)

My favorite of all was the hot stone jjajang, jjajang noodles served on a hot stone plate. I have visited quite a few places after searching for Gwangju hot stone jjajang, but it had been a while since I tasted such a rich flavor, with gentle wok smokiness and a thick sauce soaked right in. It had that classic hot stone jjajang feel.

If you come to Cheomdan's Mayway and cannot decide what to eat, I would absolutely recommend starting with the two-person hot stone jjajang. Perhaps because the jjajang is cooked on the stone plate, the flavor was much cleaner, and it was full of different seafood, giving it a distinctly more refined taste than regular jjajang.

For an extra side, we had the crisp assorted fried dumplings, too. They were crisp outside but moist and generously filled inside, so I thought they would pair well with any main dish. If a side of dumplings is tastier than one from a dumpling specialist, I say it should be added alongside whatever main you order, hehe.

![Grapefruit cream shrimp](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-cheomdan-doljajang-mayway/gwangju-cheomdan-doljajang-mayway-11-11mfo-900.webp)

## What does grapefruit cream shrimp taste like?

It was my first time seeing grapefruit cream shrimp, so I wondered, would it be good? I had tried lemon cream shrimp before, but grapefruit cream shrimp was new and tasty enough that I thought it might soon catch on. The tart freshness of grapefruit went beautifully with the fried shrimp, giving it the feel of a special dish that is hard to find elsewhere. The portion is generous, too, making it a hidden value-for-money gem.

And they even take care of you with ice cream for dessert, just like this.

With its tidy atmosphere and convenient self-service bar, I think even a large group could dine here comfortably. It is a new Cheomdan restaurant that opened in July, yet it has already built up quite a number of blog reviews—so many people serious about good food have already visited.
