There are so many barbecue joints and bars around Namyeong-dong that I end up eating there pretty often. This time, instead of samgyeopsal or mokssal, I was craving dakgalbi grilled over charcoal, so I headed to Onggyejip Sutbul Dakgalbi, a well-known spot near Namyeong Station.

Instead of the Chuncheon-style dakgalbi stir-fried on a griddle, this is the charcoal-grilled style, and it has a totally different charm from the dakgalbi I usually eat.

## Charcoal dakgalbi between Namyeong and Sookmyung Women's University stations

Onggyejip sits between Namyeong Station and Sookmyung Women's University Station, so it's reasonably accessible from both. Namyeong-dong itself has become a neighborhood packed with good restaurants and bars lately, so it's easy to head somewhere else for a second round after dinner. It's not just handy for people looking for restaurants near Sookmyung Women's University Station — it's also not far from the War Memorial of Korea, so it could work well as a place to eat after visiting the memorial.

If you look around Namyeong-dong these days, there are a ton of pork-focused restaurants, so a place that puts charcoal-grilled dakgalbi front and center really caught my eye.

## Ordering 2 servings of seasoned and 1 of soy sauce dakgalbi

The menu ranges from single orders to set menus. That day I ordered two servings of seasoned dakgalbi and one serving of soy sauce dakgalbi!

The basic side dish spread comes out looking pretty solid. I liked that there was a good variety of wrap vegetables.

## Seasoned dakgalbi grilled over charcoal at Onggyejip

Once you sit down, the charcoal comes out and you get to grilling the dakgalbi yourself. It really feels different from griddle-style dakgalbi right from the start. The chicken coated in sauce started sizzling on the charcoal, and the smell that came up was pretty great. Since it's pre-cooked before serving, you don't need to grill it for long — though that can mean the dish takes a bit of time to arrive.

Because of the sauce, dakgalbi can burn easily, so it's important to flip it often while grilling! Watching the surface cook up all golden and delicious made me want a drink, the same way meat does haha. If you've gotten a little tired of always eating pork at restaurants near Sookmyung Women's University Station, this charcoal dakgalbi seems like a solid alternative.

I grilled it over the charcoal until it was golden brown and the sauce started to slightly caramelize, then took a bite right away. It definitely had more of that charcoal aroma compared to griddle-stirred dakgalbi. It wasn't just the strong seasoning I tasted — the smoky flavor came through as it grilled, so I kept reaching for one piece after another.

Since it's chicken rather than pork, it felt relatively light to eat, which I liked. And with the sauce, it wasn't bland at all — it worked well as a drinking snack too. The slightly crispy, well-charred bits where the sauce had caramelized had an even deeper flavor, and I personally enjoyed those the most. If you're looking for restaurants near Namyeong Station that grill dakgalbi directly over charcoal, I'd recommend starting with this seasoned version.

## Why mixing in the soy sauce dakgalbi works

It felt like something was missing if I only ate the seasoned version, so I also ordered one serving of soy sauce dakgalbi. Looking back, ordering two servings of seasoned and one of soy sauce was the right call. If the seasoned dakgalbi is bolder and spicier, the soy sauce version is comparatively easier and more comfortable to eat.

It has a mild sweet-and-savory flavor, so switching over to the soy sauce version in between bites of the seasoned one changed things up nicely. Even though it's the same dakgalbi, the sauce makes a pretty big difference in how it feels. So if it's your first visit, rather than ordering just one flavor, I'd suggest mixing seasoned and soy sauce the way we did.

## Seasoned or soy sauce: which dakgalbi to pick?

What I liked most about eating at Onggyejip was definitely the direct charcoal grilling. Griddle dakgalbi has its own fun in stir-frying the sauce and vegetables together and finishing with fried rice, while charcoal dakgalbi is about grilling the meat itself and enjoying that smoky flavor. In particular, the smoky aroma coming off the golden, slightly charred chicken surface paired really well with the sauce. So even though it's called dakgalbi, the eating experience actually felt closer to a barbecue restaurant.

If you're searching for restaurants near Namyeong-dong or Sookmyung Women's University Station and craving something other than samgyeopsal or mokssal, this gives you plenty of reason to consider it.

Having tried both, taste preference will vary, but for a first visit I'd recommend the seasoned version first. The combination of the charcoal aroma and bold sauce made it easier to feel the appeal of Onggyejip's charcoal dakgalbi right away.

That said, if you're eating with about three people, rather than ordering all seasoned, I'd recommend mixing it up like we did — two servings of seasoned dakgalbi plus one of soy sauce. The soy sauce version switches things up in the middle, so it's more fun to pick between flavors than eating seasoned the whole time. If you're visiting as a pair, it might also be a good idea to order one of each from the start and then add more of whichever one you like better.

## Finishing with doenjang jjigae and cheese bomb steamed egg

To finish the meal, I added the cheese bomb steamed egg to the doenjang jjigae that comes included, and mixed it all up nicely with Onggyejip's signature two-grain rice blend haha.
