## In short

Hwangbuja Jeotgal is a salted seafood (jeotgal) stall inside Sokcho Jungang Market (Sokcho Tourist Fish Market) in Sokcho, Gangwon. The writer returned the next morning at 10am to buy myeongtaehoe-muchim (spicy shredded pollock) 600g and baekmyeongran (white pollock roe) 400g at ₩15,000 each, packed in a cooler bag with ice packs for the trip back to Seoul. ## Why I went back the morning I was heading home, after tasting the day before

The day before, I'd gone to Hwangbuja Twigim (fried food stall) in Jungang Market to buy squid sundae and fried snacks, and right next door they were also selling jeotgal (salted seafood). While waiting for my food I looked around and tried a taste — it was so good haha.

I love jeotgal in general, and whenever I visit a jeotgal market I buy a ton and stash it in the freezer, so there was no way I was leaving without this stuff haha. So on the day I was heading back home, I went again.

The day before, when I came after lunch there were a lot of cars, but this time around 10am there weren't many cars parking haha. So I parked right away and headed into the market.

Since I'd already been there the day before, I found Hwangbuja Jeotgal without getting lost this time.

![A display of many types of jeotgal](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-market-jeotgal-pollack-salad-cooler-pack/sokcho-market-jeotgal-pollack-salad-cooler-pack-03-sa546-966.webp)

True to its reputation as a jeotgal spot at Sokcho Jungang Market, they had many types on sale. Since I'd already tasted several kinds the day before and decided at the guesthouse what to buy, I ordered right away with no hesitation.

## Myeongtaehoe-muchim 600g, to pile onto makguksu at home

First I bought Sokcho's most famous myeongtaehoe-muchim (spicy shredded raw pollock), 600g for ₩15,000. Whenever I come to Sokcho I get myeongtaehoe-makguksu, but the pollock is expensive so restaurants never give you much haha. So I bought this to load it on generously at home. I'd tasted it the day before and honestly the pollock here was better than the makguksu place I ate at that same day haha.

### Baekmyeongran 400g, they picked the prettiest broken pieces for me

Next I bought baekmyeongran (white pollock roe), 400g for ₩15,000. It's for eating at home anyway, so who cares if the sacs are broken or not haha — cheap is what matters most haha. There was a low-salt version too, but since I tend to eat salty, I didn't get that one.

Even though it was the broken pieces, they still picked out the prettiest ones for me. They also gave more than 400g, and I could check the scale myself right in front of me, so I could trust what I was buying.

## Sweet pumpkin sikhye and the receipt review event

Sweet pumpkin sikhye (danhobak sikhye) is famous at Jungang Market, and Hwangbuja Jeotgal sells it too. They had small and large bottles — if you like sweet pumpkin sikhye, it might be worth picking some up along with your jeotgal.

They're also running a Naver receipt review event. Writing a review only takes 1–2 minutes, so make sure to do it and get your jeotgal!!! 80g is more than it sounds haha.

## How they packed it for the trip to Seoul

Since we had to travel all the way to Seoul, they carefully sealed everything in a cooler bag with ice packs.

Once we had all our orders, we hurried back to the parking lot. There was a line of customers behind us too, but also we needed to beat the traffic haha. If you leave Sokcho a bit late, you hit rush hour right as you arrive in Seoul — and then who knows when you'll actually get home haha. Luckily we made it back before rush hour traffic hit.

When we got home and opened it up, the ice packs had held up so well that everything was still really cold haha. That's Hwangbuja Jeotgal, Sokcho Jungang Market's jeotgal go-to!! Of course it's salted seafood so it doesn't really matter temperature-wise, but it still feels good to have it cold haha.

## Portioning and freezing at home, then trying it with white rice

You could just leave it in the container and eat straight from it, but they told me portioning it out and freezing it is best, so I got right to it.

You can see the pollock is really well fermented, right?? I thought if it was too firm I'd let it sit a bit longer, but it was plenty delicious to eat right away.

Time to taste it. The best pairing for jeotgal is definitely white rice haha. I bought it to put on makguksu, but it's just as delicious with rice.

Dragging my tired body along, I portioned out the baekmyeongran too.

![Portioning out the baekmyeongran](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-market-jeotgal-pollack-salad-cooler-pack/sokcho-market-jeotgal-pollack-salad-cooler-pack-16-7muns-966.webp)

At first there seemed to be a lot of loose grains stuck to it, but once I started portioning it, the sacs were actually intact?? haha But with this many roe grains stuck on, they probably came off inside the jeotgal container from Sokcho??

I portioned all the intact ones into the freezer and gathered the leftover loose bits to eat right away for dinner. After a tiring trip, it was nice to have a quick meal sorted haha.

No other side dishes needed — just pollock roe on rice is absolutely delicious!!!

## Delivery orders are available too

Hwangbuja Jeotgal, the go-to jeotgal shop at Sokcho Jungang Market, also takes delivery orders. Once we finish the myeongtaehoe-muchim we bought this time, we're planning to order a batch together for our place and my parents' place haha. If I'd known it would be this good, I would've bought more while I was there... If you ever find yourself at Sokcho Jungang Market, I highly recommend stopping by Hwangbuja Jeotgal at least once!!
