Do you like marinated crab? People who love it will know: every now and then, there comes a day when you seriously crave this ultimate rice thief.

Everyone in my family absolutely loves marinated crab, whether soy-marinated or spicy. This time, when my mom and I were talking about what to eat over the weekend, we both suddenly got an urgent craving for it. I wanted spicy marinated crab, and Mom wanted soy-marinated crab… We were totally on the same wavelength for once, haha.

We decided that if we were doing this, we should go somewhere truly good, so we splurged and visited Kkotgeok (꽃게옥), a marinated-crab specialist in Yuryang-dong, Cheonan that I’d had my eye on for a while!

Kkotgeok is along Yuryang-ro, where restaurants cluster in Yuryang-dong, Cheonan. The area feels like a local restaurant street full of good options for family meals, so it was nice for a weekend lunch too.

The restaurant is not right on the main road. When you see this sign, head inside. We came with my mom and dad for an early weekend lunch, and I was completely taken with the hanok-style exterior before we even went in..

We came for marinated crab, but when the exterior already wins you over like this, you naturally expect even more from the food too.. haha

When you go out for a family meal, easy parking is the best, right? Kkotgeok has a large dedicated lot in front, which made parking wonderfully easy.

The hanok-inspired building had such a lovely mood even before we entered. There are two substantial hanok buildings, and even the wooden gate at the entrance felt tranquil, making it feel like we had come out for a special meal.

## Hanok exterior and spacious interior atmosphere

Once inside, the restaurant had a completely different atmosphere from the hanok-style exterior.

The main hall was high-ceilinged and spacious, so it never felt stuffy. A large chandelier in the middle made it more atmospheric than I expected. Wood-tone tables, quietly colored chairs, and floor-to-ceiling windows looking onto the courtyard created a clean yet warm feeling—it felt like a Korean restaurant with great ambience. We were seated by the window, and even though it was early on a weekend, there were already diners eating.

The space that looked like a detached building is where guests can enter with their dogs. I took a quick look around, and it was a clean, roomy space with a comfortable atmosphere.

The main building also had very well-appointed private rooms opposite the hall. The rooms were clean and would be great to reserve for a family gathering or an important meal. While we ate, I saw lots of family groups who seemed to be there for parents’ birthdays or family occasions.

## Ordering the roe-filled female crab set meal and C set

Kkotgeok’s signature looked to be the roe-filled female crab set meal, which lets you try both soy-marinated crab and spicy marinated crab.

The roe-filled female crab set meal is ₩35,000 per person, and for just about ₩10,000 more for two people, the Kkotgeok A, B, and C sets add crab stew, boiled pork, and dried yellow corvina. Such an appealing option.

The three of us thought a soup would be nice, so we ordered the Kkotgeok C set, which includes crab stew, plus one additional serving of the roe-filled female crab set meal. There were plenty of disposable gloves on the table. Marinated crab tastes best eaten with your hands, so I always appreciate thoughtful preparation like that, haha.

After a short wait, all the dishes arrived at once, and the table was incredibly generous.

Soy-marinated crab, spicy marinated crab, and crab stew all on one table—the visuals alone were the very definition of a rice thief! Each person gets one soy-marinated crab and one spicy marinated crab. As a marinated-crab lover, it was a sight that made me smile just looking at it, haha.

The side dishes were neatly served too. There was japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), gat kimchi (mustard-leaf kimchi), roasted seaweed, stir-fried fish cake, seasoned seaweed, white kimchi, seasoned bean sprouts, seasoned zucchini, and seasoned bellflower root—enough rice accompaniments to finish a bowl of rice with those alone.

## Soy-marinated crab that was neither fishy nor too salty

The side dishes were clean-tasting overall, so having them between bites of crab really whetted my appetite. I started with the soy-marinated crab! I was drooling while taking photos, haha.

The roe-filled female crabs came neatly prepared and easy to eat; happiness started just from looking at them. I took a generous bite and sucked out the crab meat, and oh my... it was packed full, with no fishiness at all, and it wasn’t overly salty either. I was moved.. “This is so good” just slipped out of me, seriously.

Rather than overpowering the crab, the soy sauce seemed to bring out the sweetness of the meat. I’ve visited my fair share of good marinated-crab places, and Kkotgeok’s soy-marinated crab was easily among the best I’ve had.

Putting rice and a little butter into the roe-filled shell and mixing it up? You absolutely cannot skip that! You can’t go home without eating it, haha. I usually love mixing rice with marinated crab and wrapping it in roasted seaweed, but here I even forgot to do that. It was just too good on its own.. A genuinely excellent marinated-crab restaurant in Cheonan and Yuryang-dong, confirmed!

It was so good even with just the soy sauce that after we finished the crab, I mixed rice with the sauce and butter, then wrapped it in seaweed too, you know? Yum yum, haha. Then I tried the spicy marinated crab, and wow, what is going on with this seasoning..

## Balanced spicy marinated crab and crab stew

The savory, sweet, and spicy flavors were harmoniously balanced, with none of them overwhelming the others. The seasoning was not simply strong—it went beautifully with the crab meat. As I slurped it up, I found myself smiling without realizing it.

The minari (water parsley) served on top was fragrant and lovely too. Both the soy-marinated and spicy marinated crabs were roe-filled female crabs packed with meat, so it really felt like a properly generous marinated-crab feast.

And the crab stew that comes with the C set was not treated like an afterthought either. A large roe-filled female crab sat right in it, and the refreshing, hot broth made the meal feel even fuller and more comforting. The crab in the stew was packed with meat too, making it well worth picking apart.

The broth was not excessively spicy or harsh, yet it still had plenty of savory depth, so it went very well with the marinated crab.

## Why it was great for a parents’ birthday and family meal

My mom, dad, and I all ate generously and happily. As we ate, guests kept coming into both the hall and private rooms. There had been plenty of seats when we arrived, but it was full by the time we left! I think reserving ahead on weekends would make for a more relaxed meal. I reserved by phone, but you can also book through Naver!

At the register, I also saw another guest getting takeout, and it looked neatly prepared. My family usually talks a lot over meals, but that day, after the crabs arrived, the three of us spent a while doing nothing but eating and saying how delicious everything was.. It felt like we came to our senses halfway through and started talking again, haha.

Marinated crab is our family’s favorite menu item, so that certainly helped, but above all, the soy-marinated and spicy marinated crabs themselves were delicious, which made us very satisfied. With the tranquil hanok atmosphere, atmospheric interior, spacious parking, and private rooms, this was a Cheonan Yuryang-dong restaurant that was truly great for bringing your parents.
