## In short

Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch (최우영스시야 종로점) is a basement sushi restaurant in Jongno, Seoul, a 3–5 minute walk from Jonggak Station Exit 1. Two of us came for dinner and ordered the 16-piece top set (₩27,000), the 17-piece premium set (₩33,000) and 5 pieces of torched beef brisket sushi (₩9,500), tasting abalone, eel, tuna, red sea bream, flounder fin, gunkan and aburi in one sitting. Ordering both sets at Choe Uyeong Sushiya gives slightly different line-ups even where the fish overlap, and with the brisket sushi it makes a filling dinner for two.

I went to Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch (최우영스시야 종로점) for a sushi dinner in Jonggak. It's only a 3–5 minute walk from Jonggak Station Exit 1, and you can also walk there from Gwanghwamun, so it's a handy stop when you're looking for sushi around Jongno.

We went as a pair and ordered the 16-piece top set, the 17-piece premium set and 5 pieces of torched brisket sushi. There was so much variety that instead of focusing on one or two kinds, we got to try abalone, eel, tuna and sea bream, plus gunkan (seaweed-wrapped sushi) and aburi (lightly torched) styles, all in one sitting~

## Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch: location, hours and parking

The restaurant is at 7 Jongno 5-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul, B1 Room 104, and it's open daily 11:00–21:30. Break time is 15:00–17:00, last order is at 21:00, and parking is free for 2 hours.

It's about 235 m from Jonggak Station Exit 1 and close to Jongno Tower and Grand Seoul. You can also walk from Gwanghwamun Station, so it's convenient both for people searching for sushi near Jonggak Station and for office workers around Gwanghwamun.

## What are the atmosphere and seating like at Choe Uyeong Sushiya?

You go into the building, take the elevator down to the first basement level, and the restaurant is right there.

Big sushi photos and menus are posted right at the entrance, so it wasn't hard to find. Inside, there were quite a lot more seats than I expected. One side has a long run of seating, and plants dotted here and there keep the space from feeling empty.

The tables are nicely spaced, and there are seats for solo diners as well as bigger groups, so it looked fine for a solo lunch or a work meal. You order on the tablet at the table, so you can browse the menu slowly without calling a staff member over.

## What we ordered for dinner for two, and the prices

- Top set, 16 pieces: ₩27,000
- Premium set, 17 pieces: ₩33,000
- Torched brisket sushi, 5 pieces: ₩9,500

After ordering, a warm broth with fried tofu and scallions came out first. We'd had a spoonful or two when the sushi started arriving: the top set came on a round plate with 16 pieces, and the premium set on a long rectangular plate with 17 pieces. Put side by side, there were so many kinds and colors that it looked pretty lavish for photos, haha

## What comes in the 16-piece top sushi set (₩27,000)?

The top set comes on a round plate with 16 pieces, covering everything from abalone to tuna, flounder fin, shrimp and gunkan, so it was fun to pick through one by one. Next I tried the eel sushi. It was brushed with sauce so it glistened, with a little garnish on top.

![Sauce-brushed eel sushi from the top set](https://img.superchart.com/images/jonggak-sushi-premium-platters-for-two/jonggak-sushi-premium-platters-for-two-10-1gquu-900.webp)

The eel was so tender it broke apart without any effort, and the sweet-savory sauce went well with the rice. There were several pieces of tuna too, and as you can see in the photo, the reddish cuts were thick enough to cover the rice generously. A little wasabi on top cut through the richness, and I liked that they weren't sliced paper-thin.

I also tried the yukhoe gunkan (Korean beef tartare), where seaweed wraps the rice and the beef tartare and scallions sit on top. The tartare was more generous than I expected, so you really tasted the meat in one bite, and the scallions kept it from feeling heavy.

There were several kinds of raw fish sushi too. The one I remember is the flounder fin, which was a bit springier than regular flounder and had a nutty flavor. Another piece had a little garnish on top, so it was good without dipping much in soy sauce, and the fish wasn't smaller than the rice, so you really tasted it in each bite.

Lastly, the onion sushi had plenty of thinly sliced onion piled on top. Eating the crunchy onion with salmon was clean and not greasy, and with the sauce added it was solidly tasty too, haha

## How does the 17-piece premium set (₩33,000) differ from the top set?

The premium set comes on a long plate with 17 pieces, one more than the top set, and the lineup is a little more varied. The top set already had lots of kinds, but the premium set lined up tuna, sea bream, shrimp, eel, egg and more in one long row.

Ordering both plates together meant that even where kinds overlapped, the combinations were slightly different. I personally like eating a little of many kinds more than several pieces of just one, so I was happy with it.

### Thick abalone sushi

Looking back at the photos, the first thing that caught my eye was the abalone sushi. Each piece of abalone was quite wide and thick, so you tasted the abalone before the rice.

![17-piece premium set on a long plate with abalone sushi](https://img.superchart.com/images/jonggak-sushi-premium-platters-for-two/jonggak-sushi-premium-platters-for-two-16-10wbe-900.webp)

It had that characteristic abalone chew without being too tough, and it got nuttier the more I chewed. I love abalone and always reach for it first when it's in a sushi set, and I enjoyed it again this time.

### Scallop, shrimp, crab and red sea bream sushi

I tried a scallop piece too. The scallop was thick and soft in the mouth, with a slightly springy texture that lingered as I chewed, and it was mild with a subtle sweetness.

![Cooked and torched shrimp sushi from the premium set](https://img.superchart.com/images/jonggak-sushi-premium-platters-for-two/jonggak-sushi-premium-platters-for-two-19-19ajg-900.webp)

![Thick-cut sea bream sushi from the premium set](https://img.superchart.com/images/jonggak-sushi-premium-platters-for-two/jonggak-sushi-premium-platters-for-two-21-1eyfp-900.webp)

The shrimp sushi wasn't just one kind either, ranging from cooked shrimp to lightly torched shrimp, so we picked through them one by one. There was also a crab meat piece, and the crab on top was more generous than I expected. It was soft and nutty, and went down easily with the rice, haha

Finally, the sea bream sushi was thick-cut too. With so many kinds of raw fish sushi they're easy to mix up by looks alone, but the ones I remember while eating were sea bream and flounder fin. Both were mild with different textures, so they were nice to alternate between.

With so many kinds, we didn't set an order from the start and just ate whatever caught our eye, and with all that picking, the 16 and 17 pieces disappeared faster than I expected, haha

## Is the torched beef brisket sushi (5 pieces, ₩9,500) worth adding?

The 5-piece torched brisket sushi costs ₩9,500, and I added it because eating only raw fish sushi felt like it was missing something. Brisket sits on top of the rice, with thinly sliced onion and sauce over it. The smoky torched flavor hits first in each bite, and the onion balanced the richness of the meat so it wasn't too heavy.

![5 pieces of torched brisket sushi with onion and sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/jonggak-sushi-premium-platters-for-two/jonggak-sushi-premium-platters-for-two-22-1bbd5-900.webp)

![One piece of smoky torched brisket sushi](https://img.superchart.com/images/jonggak-sushi-premium-platters-for-two/jonggak-sushi-premium-platters-for-two-23-14ble-900.webp)

It tastes completely different from the raw fish sushi, so grabbing one here and there in between worked well, and it's definitely worth adding for anyone who likes meat sushi. Five pieces is an amount two people can share without it feeling like too much.

## Verdict: a Jonggak sushi dinner for trying many kinds at once

At Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch, we ordered the 16-piece top set and the 17-piece premium set together, and the variety really was impressive. From my favorites like abalone and eel to tuna, sea bream, flounder fin, shrimp, shellfish, crab and gunkan, we could pick one at a time, so even within a single plate the lineup never felt monotonous.

Above all, both the 16 and 17 pieces are generous, so it's a good order for days when you want to try many kinds, and adding the torched brisket sushi made it quite filling for two. It's close to Jonggak Station, easy for an office lunch or dinner, and walkable from Gwanghwamun, so if you're looking for sushi in Jongno or near Gwanghwamun, it's worth a visit.

Next time, I think it would be nice to pick just the things I enjoyed this time, like abalone, flounder fin and eel, from the à la carte sushi on the menu, haha
