## In short

Namsogwan U Yuk Dosakmyeon is a Chinese restaurant on Teheran-ro 1-gil near Gangnam Station in Seoul. Beef shaved noodles and mala tofu made for a filling meal, alternating brothy noodles with stir-fried tofu. Verdict: a combination worth returning for when thick, chewy noodles sound good.

I was looking for somewhere to eat near Gangnam Station and felt like having something a little different from my usual choices, so I went to Namsogwan U Yuk Dosakmyeon (남소관 우육도삭면). When I think of Chinese food in Gangnam, jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles) or jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) come to mind first, but that day I was craving beef shaved noodles with their thick, hand-shaved noodles. I had really liked the noodle texture when I came before, so I went straight in again.

The menu had plenty of dishes to share, from dim sum to guobaorou (sweet-and-sour crispy pork), lazi ji, and fried eggplant, but I chose meal-focused dishes rather than ordering lots of things that day. I ordered the signature beef shaved noodles and added mala tofu. Having a tofu dish to alternate with the soupy noodles made it a more filling meal than I expected.

## Going to Namsogwan near Gangnam Station for shaved noodles

Namsogwan U Yuk Dosakmyeon is on Teheran-ro 1-gil in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, and occupies the first and second floors. It was in a convenient spot to stop by for a meal when meeting near Gangnam Station, and there were quite a few seats once I got inside, more than it looked like from outside. Some people had come for a quick bowl of noodles, while other tables were dining in groups, giving it the lively feel of a Chinese restaurant in Gangnam.

One thing I remembered from my earlier visit was the separate visible area where handmade dim sum is prepared. Rather than a typical Chinese takeout-style restaurant, it felt closer to a place serving beef noodle soup, dim sum, and a range of Chinese dishes together. I did not order dim sum this time, but as I looked through the menu, the shumai and xiaolongbao kept catching my eye.

## Beef shaved noodles and mala tofu from the Namsogwan menu

The first thing I picked from the Namsogwan menu was, of course, the beef shaved noodles at ₩11,000. It is Namsogwan's signature dish, made with an ox-bone broth and brisket that is boiled in-house; its biggest feature is that it comes with shaved noodles rather than ordinary thin noodles. I wanted something more than noodles alone, so I also ordered mala tofu at ₩10,800.

There were more dishes than I expected, so choosing might have taken a while if I had come with a group. The shumai with shrimp and pork was ₩9,000, crystal shrimp dumplings with whole shrimp were ₩9,800, and xiaolongbao was also ₩9,800; guobaorou was ₩19,000. There were cooked dishes such as lazi ji and fried eggplant too, but that day I decided to focus on the beef shaved noodles and mala tofu.

## Gangnam Station beef shaved noodles: trying the thick noodles first

The Namsogwan beef shaved noodles arrived first, and the noodles were clearly different from the noodles I normally eat. Shaved noodles vary in width and thickness even within one strand, which makes their bite fun. I think they would suit people who enjoy thick, chewy noodles more than those who prefer noodles that go down thin and smooth.

Because this dish has ox-bone broth and brisket boiled in-house, I preferred eating the noodles with the broth rather than lifting out just the noodles. The broth clung to the broad noodles, and eating bits of meat along the way made even one bowl quite filling. Those shaved noodles are exactly why this comes to mind when I want something a little different from the usual noodle dishes around Gangnam Station.

## Namsogwan mala tofu, different from mapo tofu

The mala tofu I ordered alongside it is, just as its name says, a dish of tofu stir-fried with mala seasoning. At first glance it brings to mind a familiar Chinese tofu dish, but because it is mala tofu, it gave me a completely different way to eat alongside the beef shaved noodles. It was ₩10,800, so I ordered it as one noodle dish plus one cooked dish.

I ate a few bites of beef shaved noodles, then had some mala tofu in between, and this worked really well. Adding bites of tofu kept the meal from becoming monotonous compared with eating only broth and noodles. Especially if you like mala dishes, this pairing of mala tofu with the beef shaved noodles is worth trying instead of ordering the noodles alone.

## What it was like ordering beef shaved noodles and mala tofu together

What I liked about ordering the two dishes together was that the ways of eating them did not overlap. The beef shaved noodles are about broth and thick noodles, while the mala tofu is stir-fried tofu, so I kept alternating between them rather than eating only one thing. I had a bite of shaved noodles, a little mala tofu, then went back to the broth.

I was worried about the portion size, so I did not order a lot, but on a day when, like me, a single noodle dish feels a little lacking, beef shaved noodles plus mala tofu was a good amount. Unlike adding a fried dish such as guobaorou, it felt like having two proper meal dishes, so it seemed well suited not only to dinner but also to a lunch when I wanted a substantial meal.

## Why choosing the next dishes was easy

I only had two dishes this time, but Namsogwan is not really a place where you simply eat shaved noodles and leave; it has a lineup that lets you choose several handmade dim sum and Chinese dishes. The menu includes dim sum such as shumai with shrimp and pork, crystal shrimp dumplings with whole shrimp, and juicy xiaolongbao, as well as dishes such as guobaorou, lazi ji, and fried eggplant.

When dining alone, a bowl of beef shaved noodles would do nicely, while for two or more people, adding a dish like this seems a good way to enjoy the menu properly. Ordering mala tofu this time made it a different meal from when I had only the beef shaved noodles before. When I crave shaved noodles near Gangnam Station, I think Namsogwan will come to mind first again.
