## In short

Jangsu Jjambbong Jeonmunjeom is a Chinese restaurant near Godeok New Town in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi. Two diners ordered jjambbong, ganjajang, and a small sweet and sour pork, with the thin, old-school crispy coating standing out through the final piece. Verdict: a worthwhile stop for crisp tangsuyuk and spicy jjambbong.

## Why I visited Jangsu Jjambbong Jeonmunjeom for weekday lunch

While wondering what to have for weekday lunch, I finally visited a place I had been curious about for a while. I decided to try Jangsu Jjambbong Jeonmunjeom, which is said to be known for jjambbong in Pyeongtaek’s Godeok area.

The restaurant is on Godeokbuk-ro near Godeok New Town, and it felt like the sort of place nearby office workers often visit at lunchtime. There is parking too, so coming by car was not especially inconvenient.

On weekdays, it is open from 11:00 to 19:00, with a break from 15:00 to 17:00. And on Saturdays and public holidays, it serves lunch only! It is regularly closed on Sundays, so it would be best to check before visiting.

The two of us ordered one ganjajang (black bean noodles with sauce served separately), one jjambbong (spicy seafood noodle soup), and a small tangsuyuk (Korean sweet and sour pork). I had high expectations for the jjambbong from a Godeok jjambbong spot, but the tangsuyuk delivered an unexpected flavor too.

## How was the old-school fried coating on the tangsuyuk?

![Crispy old-style tangsuyuk](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-godeok-oldstyle-tangsuyuk/pyeongtaek-godeok-oldstyle-tangsuyuk-04-9qno1-900.webp)

Honestly, the most memorable dish was the tangsuyuk. These days, most Chinese restaurants tend to serve glutinous-rice tangsuyuk as the standard, don’t they? I had grown used to that chewy, soft texture, so I ordered without huge expectations—but this place uses a classic old-school coating rather than glutinous-rice batter.

From the first piece I picked up, I could hear the outside crackle as it broke, while the inside was generously filled with meat, giving it a proper bite. Glutinous-rice tangsuyuk can sometimes turn soggy or stretchy as time passes, but this old-style version had a thin, crisp coating, so there was less of that disappointment. The meat was well filled out too; it did not feel like a thick coating with hardly anything inside.

The sauce was the original sweet-and-tangy style. It was not overly thick and tasted clean, pairing nicely without taking away from the crispness of the fried coating. Personally, I prefer an old-school coating that shatters crisply over the chewiness of glutinous-rice tangsuyuk, so I especially liked this dish. It may be known as a jjambbong restaurant in Pyeongtaek’s Godeok area, but the tangsuyuk alone felt like more than enough reason to come back.

Even though we ordered the small size, there was plenty to share, and it was an easy side to have with jjambbong or jajangmyeon. I also liked that the coating stayed crisp for quite a while, so the last piece was not soggy and could be enjoyed just as it had at the start. Tangsuyuk often gets soggy toward the end, which can be disappointing, but I remember being able to enjoy that crisp texture all the way through without worrying about it.

## Spicy jjambbong and gently smoky ganjajang

Now for the dish that truly lives up to the name: Pyeongtaek Godeok jjambbong. As soon as it arrived, the spicy, warming aroma rising from the red broth whetted my appetite. One spoonful revealed a deep flavor, with savory notes drawn from seafood and vegetables.

It was generously filled too, with seafood such as squid and mussels mixed evenly with crisp vegetables. The noodles were springy, making them easy to slurp with the broth, and they absorbed the spicy flavor well, so every last chopstickful was delicious. It is the kind of flavor that comes to mind when you are craving a spicy soup dish, I suppose?

The ganjajang we ordered alongside it was impressive as well. Unlike regular jajangmyeon, ganjajang arrives with the sauce separate from the noodles for you to mix yourself, and its defining feature was the chunjang (fermented black bean paste) sauce carrying a gentle smoky flavor. The vegetables, including onion, were stir-fried until crisp, keeping their texture, and it finished cleanly without the characteristic heaviness of chunjang.

With its gentle wok-smoky aroma and savory flavor, alternating the spicy warmth of the jjambbong with the nutty, mild ganjajang meant we could finish the meal deliciously without getting tired of it.

## A lunch where all three dishes showed their own appeal

What I liked about Jangsu Jjambbong Jeonmunjeom was that it does not just do jjambbong well; other dishes such as tangsuyuk and ganjajang also bring out their own character. In particular, being able to try old-school tangsuyuk, which is not so common these days, felt like a definite strength of this place.

When you are craving Chinese food near Pyeongtaek’s Godeok New Town—especially if you want crisp old-style tangsuyuk rather than glutinous-rice tangsuyuk—I think it is a restaurant worth visiting at least once. The spicy broth of the jjambbong, the nutty flavor of the ganjajang, and the crispy tangsuyuk all clearly showed their own charms at this Pyeongtaek Chinese restaurant.
