## In short

Bako Jumak is a Korean bar in Mapo, Seoul, serving Korean beef yuk sashimi and ice-cream hotteok. On a second round, we paired raw beef with gamtae wraps and egg-yolk sauce, then finished sweetly. Verdict: A relaxed late-night stop.

## Good to know

Bako Jumak (바코주막)
A good-value Korean bar for carrying on late into the night, where fresh Korean beef yuk sashimi and sweet hotteok create a salty-sweet relay that calls for soju.

## The atmosphere at Bako Jumak in a Hapjeong side street

Even among the dark side streets, the warmly lit sign stood out, so it was easy to find. A standing sign in front of the entrance lists the dishes sold inside and their price range. It was helpful to check the menu lineup with my group before going in.

Traditional props such as rice straw and winnowing baskets hang on the walls, giving it the homey, rustic atmosphere unique to a Korean bar even within this modern commercial district. A burner is set at every table and kept neatly maintained.

## Yuk sashimi and hotteok for our second round

The menu is diverse from the start. There are so many choices that you may actually get decision paralysis. But I think that is a good thing because it gives you such a wide range of options. Since we came for a second round, we chose the lighter yuk sashimi and hotteok, which would be nice for cleansing the palate.

They give you truffle Jjapagetti through a notification-follow event, so be sure to keep that in mind and try it! I found out far too late, so I could not get the benefit ㅜㅠ

Once you sit down and finish ordering, they bring out this basic snack of gangnaengi (puffed corn). It is a familiar, unremarkable snack, but it was crisp rather than stale, and I absentmindedly emptied the bowl while waiting for the main dishes.

## Korean beef yuk sashimi with a gamtae wrap

At last, the small Korean beef yuk sashimi arrived. For such a reasonable price, it came neatly and generously arranged on a wooden plate, exceeding expectations.

One of this place's appealing points is its selection of accompaniments. Fragrant bundles of gamtae (a delicate Korean seaweed), fresh onion, chives, Cheongyang chili peppers, and sliced garlic were served neatly, making it fun to assemble wraps to taste.

First, I tried a piece of the beef on its own, without any other ingredients. The more I chewed, the more the distinct springiness and pleasant meaty aroma of Korean beef came through; it went down cleanly, without toughness or any off smell.

This is personally the gamtae-wrap combination I most want to recommend. Place yuk sashimi, sliced garlic, and Cheongyang chili on the slightly bitter gamtae, and its sharp kick cuts the richness so you can keep eating without getting tired of it.

When you thoroughly dip the beef in the beaten egg-yolk sauce, the yolk coats the raw meat, which could otherwise taste plain, and gives it a much softer, fuller nuttiness.

## Finishing with ice-cream hotteok

After filling up moderately on the beef, we added ice-cream hotteok for dessert. The heat of the hot hotteok makes the ice cream melt slightly from the edges, but that actually soaks into it like syrup and makes the texture and sweetness even more chewy.

As I cut it into easy-to-eat pieces with scissors, I was struck by the crisp surface and chewy interior that came through the tips of the scissors.

Once it is in your mouth, the sweet honey filling flows out and mingles with the soybean powder. It was a perfect K-dessert that fit the Korean-bar concept exactly.

## A Hapjeong bar worth staying at until dawn

The biggest advantage was being able to eat quality raw beef at this price point in the Hapjeong Station area. The menu lets you take care of both a main drinking snack and a dessert snack at once, and the generous hours until 4 a.m. are a powerful draw for drinkers. The owners were kind, and the wide spacing between tables meant it was not too noisy and was nice for a quiet drink.
