While everyone else was eating it, I kept skipping it, and only now did I finally give Pyongyang naengmyeon a shot. Honestly, I'd heard so much about it being a love-it-or-hate-it dish that it felt like some kind of advanced-level food, and I kept putting it off thinking "I'll try it someday." The place where I first tried Pyongyang naengmyeon is Anok (안옥) in Hongdae. 🥢 So how was my first Pyongyang naengmyeon... let's get into the honest review! 👀 ## Anok hours and how to walk there from Hongik University Station Anok is open Tue–Sun 11:00–22:00, last order at 21:00, closed Mondays. So this seems like a great spot not just for gatherings like reunions or work dinners, but for family meals too. Looking at the menu, it said the broth is simmered for 48 hours, so I got so excited haha. How would my first attempt at Pyongyang naengmyeon go... 👀 The drinks menu was pretty varied too! From regular alcohol to traditional liquors, distilled spirits, and makgeolli (rice wine), there was a good range that seemed like it'd pair well with the food here. This was my first time ever trying pork tail as a dish. Eating it, it felt exactly like the chewy skin part of jokbal (braised pig's trotters) all gathered together! Since I already prefer the chewy skin part of jokbal over the lean meat, this was totally my kind of thing. The sauce looks pretty spicy at first glance, but when you actually eat it, it's spicy-sweet and not at all overwhelming! Even people who can't handle spice well could enjoy this just fine. So glad I tried it. lol When I first ate it, just like everyone says, I thought "huh? this is a bit blander than I expected," but a day later I couldn't stop thinking about it, like it was lying to me!!! The sauce isn't as strongly seasoned as I expected, so it blends in well without ruining that distinct plain flavor of Pyongyang naengmyeon. It's nutty yet salty with a subtle sweetness, not overpowering but still addictive haha. The meat was sliced thin and wide, so it was never dry, just soft and chewy in the best way. If you've never had Pyongyang naengmyeon before, try it at Anok first!! A flavor you absolutely cannot fail with!!
