With the seasons changing, I wanted to try a new hairstyle, so while searching for a Gangnam hair salon that's good with hair, I ended up visiting Park Jun Beauty Lab Cheongdam Branch. This is my review of going from heavy, long hair to a light, fresh style with designer Leeyu's healthy build perm.

### A salon with a separate locker room and powder room

The salon is very spacious, clean, and pleasant, so it never felt crowded — I liked that. Since I'd booked ahead, after confirming my reservation at the entrance I went straight to the locker room, changed into a gown, stored my things in an individual locker, and then was shown to my seat.

Having a separate locker room like this, where you can come and go on your own and even set your own password on each locker, made it easy to stash and retrieve personal items. I also liked that there was a powder room next door to touch up in afterward.

## A consultation that starts with a hair diagnosis device

I was styled by designer Leeyu, who has a lot of experience with the signature build perm. My hair was pretty long when I came in, and honestly at first I wanted thick waves — but through a consultation covering my hair condition and past treatment history, we talked through what style would actually suit me.

And in that process, I discovered a fascinating machine! Apparently, before every perm treatment, Park Jun Beauty Lab Cheongdam Branch uses a hair diagnosis device like this one to precisely check the customer's hair condition. Because the treatment chemicals are chosen to match the diagnosed hair condition, damage is minimized and you get a healthier perm.

### Mid-length instead of long hair, S-curls up front, C-curls in back

Since I'd colored my hair multiple times, the ends were quite frizzy and damaged — if I permed it while keeping it long, the lower part likely wouldn't hold curl well at all, so she suggested I cut it instead and perm it into a mid-length style. Since I was getting a perm anyway, better to make sure the curls actually turn out — so following the designer's suggestion, we decided on a fresh build perm finished mid-length, with S-curls at the front and C-curls at the back.

## The build perm process, starting with a damaged-hair cut

So first, a bold cut of the damaged hair! She cut off quite a lot of length — I found myself thinking I should have cut it before summer ended, haha, it felt so much cooler. My hair is thick and semi-wavy, so it's heavy, and with all that length and thinning to do, the cut looked like it wouldn't be easy — but the designer carefully checked length and style as she went, and even just the cut alone left my hair feeling much fresher.

### Since it's a heat perm, softening comes first — and carefully

After the cut, it was off to the shampoo bowl for a first wash, then the actual perm work began. Since this is a heat perm, the softening step comes first.

It seems like the softening stage is really where careful checking and technique matched to your hair type matters — since my hair is thick, coarse, and plentiful, she divided it into sections even more carefully to apply the softening agent evenly, and came back to check on my hair several times during the process, which made me trust her even more.

A perm's result really depends on how carefully the designer watches over each stage, so I trusted Leeyu even more for how attentively she checked in at every step. Once the softening was done, it was shampoo time, then on to setting the curls and heat treatment!

### Rod winding and 20 minutes of heat treatment

In my case, the front and side sections were made into fresh S-curls, while the back was wound into calmer, tidier C-curls. The way the rods are wound really changes the final shape, and Leeyu divided everything into careful sections and set the design meticulously, which is why the curls came out so strong in the end.

After winding the rods, heat treatment runs for about 20 minutes, and before taking the rods out she checks the curl condition section by section and adjusts the shape once more. A true expert who doesn't skip a single step and checks everything carefully as she moves through the process! After the heat treatment, it's back to the shampoo bowl for neutralizing, then a final shampoo and treatment to finish up.

## Was it easy to style at home?

Finally, while blow-drying, she explained in detail how to style each section so the curls hold, and which hair products to use while drying. I'm pretty clumsy with hair, so I usually struggle to style at home after a perm — but build-perm specialist Leeyu demonstrated the blow-drying herself and explained it so clearly that I've been able to style it easily at home ever since.

My hair is thick with some natural waviness, which isn't the easiest type for a perm to take well, but she checked my hair condition so carefully and got the curls out beautifully — thank you so much!!
