As the weather's gotten cooler lately, I've been craving a warm hotpot and a glass of makgeolli more and more. While looking for somewhere with a good atmosphere for a drink in Mangwon-dong, I found a Korean bar called Jeongju Ilga (정주일가) and went to check it out. It's tucked inside a Mangnidan-gil alley, so anyone searching for a good Mangwon Korean bar has probably heard of it before.

Coming out of Mangwon Station Exit 2 and walking down the alley, you'll reach it pretty quickly, so accessibility wasn't bad at all.

The sign wasn't flashy, and the hanji (traditional mulberry paper) lighting mixed with wood details gave the exterior a soft, understated mood.

## Inside Jeongju Ilga: mood, tables and wireless chargers

Inside, tables for two and four were spaced comfortably apart, with hanji mood lamps hanging here and there, giving it that cozy feel unique to Korean bars.

I also thought it was a thoughtful touch that every seat came set up with a wireless charger and a box for stashing bags.

The restroom, which matters a lot on a drinking night, was inside the store, so I didn't have to step outside — very convenient.

The lighting overall wasn't dim but had a warm tone, making it a nice atmosphere for conversation.

## What's on the menu at Jeongju Ilga?

For hotpots, there's chadol doenjang hotpot (thin-sliced beef brisket with soybean paste) and seafood odeng tang (fish cake soup), and for anju (drinking snacks) there's Jeongju bossam (boiled pork wraps), bulgogi chive pancake, cheese kimchi pancake, hanwoo cheese yukhoe (Korean beef tartare with cheese), tofu kimchi, and more. The traditional liquor lineup was also varied, which made picking a drink half the fun.

This time we ordered the banban-jeon (half kimchi pancake, half bulgogi chive pancake) and the doenjang hotpot.

The banban-jeon let us try kimchi pancake and bulgogi chive pancake side by side on one plate, so there was no need to choose — we got to enjoy both flavors.

On the cheese kimchi pancake side, the tangy sourness of well-fermented kimchi hit first, and with each bite the crunch of the kimchi and the chewy batter came through together.

The batter wasn't fried thick, so the edges turned crisp almost like deep-fried, while the inside stayed moist rather than drying out — that texture really stood out. They kept a candle burning underneath to keep the pancake warm, which helped the crispness hold up for a while.

On the bulgogi chive pancake side, the bulgogi-seasoned meat and chives were mixed evenly throughout, so each bite hit that sweet-and-salty balance. The meat was thinly sliced, so it wasn't tough at all and chewed soft, with the sweet sauce and the chives' distinct aroma rising up together with every bite.

The chive flavor was kept from being overpowering, so it never felt greasy and I kept reaching for more, and the surface was fried golden, so the first bite brought a nutty, oily aroma.

The first spoonful brought a strong, savory doenjang aroma, and as it kept simmering, the sweetness drawn out from the vegetables added in, leading to a clean finish that never turned too salty.
