## In short

Seonbawi Memil Jangteo Yangjae Branch is a pure buckwheat noodle restaurant near Yangjae Citizens' Forest and the Yangjaecheon stream walking path in Seocho, Seoul. A Sunday visit at 6pm meant a wait for a table, and the mountain-pile clam buckwheat kalguksu for three did arrive piled with clams as the banner promises, though the broth tasted more of dried pollack than clam alongside hand-shaped buckwheat noodles and dadaegi chili paste. The seasoning at Seonbawi Memil Jangteo is mild, which makes it an easy choice for a meal with babies or older family members.

I spotted a banner along the Yangjaecheon stream walking path that said they pile clams on "like a mountain"...! The weather had just turned chilly and I was craving hot soup, so I couldn't walk past it and went straight in haha. Seonbawi Memil Jangteo is originally a super famous buckwheat noodle (makguksu) spot in Gwacheon, and apparently a branch recently opened near Yangjae! Since it's new, the facilities are nice, and unlike the original location, they even have baby chairs 🫧✔️🫧✔️ Best of all, they have clam buckwheat kalguksu here that the original branch doesn't — I was so happy about that!

- 📍 Hours: 09:00–21:00

Memil Jangteo's noodles are made from 100% pure buckwheat, so they're nutty and easy on the stomach! Since they open at 9am, this could work even as a breakfast spot haha.

## How long is the wait at 6pm on a Sunday?

By the time we got seated around 6pm on a Sunday, the place had filled up completely and a wait had formed...! Just like the original location, the branch is wildly popular too.

![Menu board at Memil Jangteo Yangjae Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/yangjae-sunbawi-memil-jangteo-clam-kalguksu/yangjae-sunbawi-memil-jangteo-clam-kalguksu-05-ge66z-900.webp)

![Menu listing makguksu and kalguksu dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/yangjae-sunbawi-memil-jangteo-clam-kalguksu/yangjae-sunbawi-memil-jangteo-clam-kalguksu-06-1ihdl-900.webp)

![Tables and seating inside the restaurant](https://img.superchart.com/images/yangjae-sunbawi-memil-jangteo-clam-kalguksu/yangjae-sunbawi-memil-jangteo-clam-kalguksu-07-1x1ot-900.webp)

Half the tables were eating makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles) and half were eating clam buckwheat kalguksu! We stuck to our original plan and ordered the mountain-pile clam buckwheat kalguksu haha.

![Self-serve warm buckwheat tea near the entrance](https://img.superchart.com/images/yangjae-sunbawi-memil-jangteo-clam-kalguksu/yangjae-sunbawi-memil-jangteo-clam-kalguksu-08-lzbft-900.webp)

There's also warm buckwheat tea you can help yourself to near the entrance, so I went back for refills several times.

## Side dishes at Seonbawi: water kimchi and dadaegi chili paste

The side dishes are simple. Kimchi and chili paste (dadegi)! Even though we ordered kalguksu, since makguksu is really the main dish here, we got water kimchi (mul-kimchi) instead of regular kimchi ㅠㅠ (a slightly disappointing point). The cool water kimchi paired well with the very clean, mild broth of the noodle soup, but I couldn't help thinking about spicy, punchy kimchi haha ㅠ.

![Large bowl of clam buckwheat kalguksu for three](https://img.superchart.com/images/yangjae-sunbawi-memil-jangteo-clam-kalguksu/yangjae-sunbawi-memil-jangteo-clam-kalguksu-10-e8kad-900.webp)

## Mountain-pile clam buckwheat kalguksu for 3: how does it taste?

Here's the clam buckwheat kalguksu for three people..! You'll be surprised once you see the actual size of the bowl.

![Clams piled mountain-high on the kalguksu](https://img.superchart.com/images/yangjae-sunbawi-memil-jangteo-clam-kalguksu/yangjae-sunbawi-memil-jangteo-clam-kalguksu-11-5qvgm-900.webp)

The banner ad wasn't false advertising at all — they really do pile the clams on like a mountain! They said the broth is made with dried pollack (hwangtae) and clams, but honestly the clams were on the small side, so the broth tasted more of clean pollack than clam. It wasn't the flavor I expected, but it had its own charm, and as you'll see later, I ended up scraping the bowl clean haha.

### Hand-shaped pure buckwheat noodles at Seonbawi Memil Jangteo

And the real kicker of the kalguksu is the buckwheat noodles!!

![Handmade pure buckwheat kalguksu noodles](https://img.superchart.com/images/yangjae-sunbawi-memil-jangteo-clam-kalguksu/yangjae-sunbawi-memil-jangteo-clam-kalguksu-13-wtgj5-900.webp)

These buckwheat noodles are handmade, and they were chewy yet clean-tasting, and really easy on the stomach — I loved it. After trying these noodles, I really wanted to try the makguksu too.

True to a pollack-based broth, there were big chunks of dried pollack mixed in as well.

It might not look that appetizing in photos haha, but even though I'm usually a purist about plain kalguksu, the chili paste here was so tasty that it went surprisingly well with this soup! So I alternated between eating it plain and stirring in the chili paste haha. The water kimchi was cool and delicious too, so I got a refill!

## Why Seonbawi Memil Jangteo works with babies and older family

It wasn't quite the flavor I expected, but I ate really well and enjoyed it +_+ This Yangjae restaurant, Seonbawi Memil Jangteo, is mild and clean-tasting overall and easy to digest, so it would be great to bring young kids or elderly family here! If you're taking a walk along the Yangjaecheon stream or happen to be near Yangjae, definitely give Seonbawi Memil Jangteo a visit ☺️☺️
