## Looking for sliced gizzard shad near Kyungsung and Pukyong National Universities

I had visited Sintongyeong Oyster Soup Rice near Suyeong Paldo Market a few times before, but this was my first time at Sintongyeong near Kyungsung University. The familiar name made me oddly happy, and since gizzard shad was just coming into season, I came planning to have a plate with a drink.

I love sashimi so much that I seek out seasonal fish whenever the seasons change, and autumn gizzard shad is especially hard to pass up. Rather than being cut thick and enjoyed for its texture like other sashimi, it is finely sliced and fun to eat with perilla leaves, makjang (savory fermented soybean paste), and garlic—making it a great drinking snack.

That search for good gizzard shad brought me to Sintongyeong Gyeongseongdae Branch. To give away the result first, the sashimi was good, but the generous spread of basic side dishes was even better than expected and stayed with me. It is worth putting on the list if you are looking for a sashimi restaurant near Kyungsung or Pukyong National University for drinks.

## Location and atmosphere at Sintongyeong Gyeongseongdae Branch

Sintongyeong Gyeongseongdae Branch sits in the Kyungsung University–Pukyong National University commercial area. With so many restaurants and bars nearby, it is an easy place to head for dinner, and it is fairly accessible by public transportation too.

When you arrive, the large “Sintongyeong Sashimi & Seafood” sign makes it easy to spot. There is also a fish tank at the entrance, which gives it a clear sashimi-restaurant feel, and you can get a sense of the seafood available that day, including sliced gizzard shad. Rather than an ultra-stylish new-school place, it feels like a comfortable neighborhood spot to walk into for sashimi.

Inside, the restaurant was more spacious than I expected. Several tables begin near the entrance and the space continues farther in, so it looked comfortable both for two people and for a larger group.

The tables are arranged for four people, as at a typical sashimi restaurant, and covered with vinyl—well suited to a place where lots of dishes fill the table. There is also an inner area with plant décor and lighting, so it did not feel as cramped as expected. Overall, it blends the feel of a neighborhood sashimi restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere. The tables are not packed too tightly together, either. Above all, it is a fairly sizable option among sashimi restaurants near Pukyong National University, so it seemed suitable for dinner plans or group get-togethers.

## A menu ranging from sashimi to full meals

The menu has more choices than expected, from sashimi and seafood to drinking dishes and meals. Assorted sashimi starts at ₩40,000 for a small and goes up through medium, large, and special sizes; there is also a premium assorted sashimi option. Assorted sashimi-and-seafood sets and premium sets also looked convenient for groups.

Seafood choices include sea squirt, sea cucumber, abalone, and horned turban shell. Drinking dishes include poached octopus, poached cuttlefish, poached squid, grilled shrimp, dressed raw fish salad, and konowata sashimi salad. For a meal, there are sashimi rice bowls, mulhoe (chilled raw-fish soup), sashimi sushi, abalone ramen, shrimp ramen, and blue crab ramen. Seasonal items such as poached webfoot octopus, raw cuttlefish, sliced gizzard shad, raw shrimp, and large yellowtail change with the season.

## Plentiful banchan before the sashimi arrives

After ordering the sashimi, the side dishes began arriving one by one. This basic spread was personally one of the most impressive things about Sintongyeong Gyeongseongdae Branch. Quail eggs, green grapes, assorted pickles and dressed side dishes, and japchae (stir-fried glass noodles) were among the easy bites that gradually filled the table.

Then corn cheese, pancakes, wrap vegetables, garlic, chilies, and assorted sauces arrived, making the table feel quite abundant. It was not a place where only sashimi lands on the table; there was plenty to pick at even before it arrived, which made it nice for starting a drink. It also felt as though the side dishes here were a little more generous than at other Sintongyeong locations I have visited.

These days, many sashimi restaurants lower their fish prices by simplifying the side dishes, but this place maintains something of a full-table spread. It should suit anyone who considers the side-dish lineup important when choosing a sashimi restaurant near Pukyong National University.

## Nutty, crunchy seasonal gizzard shad for ₩40,000

The star of the day was, of course, sliced gizzard shad. It costs ₩40,000. A generous portion of finely sliced fish covered a wide plate, topped in the middle with shredded perilla leaf and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Its signature silver skin and reddish flesh were visible, and the presentation immediately felt seasonal.

It is completely different from sashimi such as flounder or rockfish that is cut into large, thick pieces. Gizzard shad is best enjoyed in several little pieces at once, and the plate held enough for two people to have with drinks.

The distinctive nutty flavor came through right away as I chewed. This is not the kind of fish that melts away softly; it has a lively, pleasantly crunchy texture from the skin and fine bones, with more flavor as you keep chewing. Since it is finely sliced, it tasted much better to pick up two or three pieces generously with chopsticks rather than eating one at a time.

### Ways to eat sliced gizzard shad, from soy sauce to makjang and wraps

Sliced gizzard shad is good on its own, but I think much of its fun is in trying different combinations. I first dipped it in soy sauce lightly mixed with wasabi, which was clean and did not overpower the fish’s nutty flavor. Then I gave it a thorough dip in makjang, for a more robust flavor.

The salty, earthy makjang paired beautifully with the rich nuttiness of the fish, and I actually liked this combination even more as a soju snack. Pile several pieces onto wrap vegetables with garlic and makjang, take one big bite, and the flavor becomes wonderfully full. At one point, I added rice and made a simple sashimi sushi bite. Even with the same plate, soy sauce, cho-gochujang (sweet-and-tangy chili sauce), makjang, wraps, and sushi-style bites kept it from becoming tiresome.

## A full table that continued with warm dishes

The side dishes did not feel like they were there simply to make up the numbers; each one was enjoyable to pick at along the way. The grilled fish had tender, easily separated flesh and a mild nuttiness, making it a nice warm accompaniment between bites of sashimi. The mulhoe, with its sweet-and-sour seasoning and crisp vegetables, refreshed my appetite all over again.

The corn cheese was exactly what I expected: sweet corn wrapped in plenty of melted cheese, nutty and soft—and you simply cannot stop reaching for something like that. A green grape here and there was sweet and cool, too, making it a good palate cleanser.

![Warm complimentary fried food served at the end](https://img.superchart.com/images/busan-jeoneo-sashimi-sintongyeong/busan-jeoneo-sashimi-sintongyeong-21-1i0dn-755.webp)

Just as we had almost finished the gizzard shad and were thinking about wrapping up our drinks, complimentary fried food arrived. So many side dishes had already come out that I wondered whether there could possibly be more, so the warm fried dish at the end was unexpectedly touching. Freshly cooked, it was crisp outside and soft inside.

After sashimi and cold dishes all evening, the hot fried food really changed the mood. The fried crab in particular was unusual and extremely crisp; rather than a drinking snack, I kept reaching for it like a palate cleanser. Since it was not something we ordered but a complimentary addition, it was even more satisfying.

## A sashimi restaurant near Pukyong National University to revisit in gizzard shad season

For someone who had only been to Sintongyeong Oyster Soup Rice near Suyeong Paldo Market, Sintongyeong Gyeongseongdae Branch was a first visit. The sashimi and side-dish spread were better than expected, and I left satisfied. I came seeking good gizzard shad and ordered the ₩40,000 plate; the portion was ample, with the distinctive nuttiness and crunchy texture that make eating seasonal gizzard shad so enjoyable.

Above all, one plate could be enjoyed in so many ways: cleanly with soy sauce and wasabi, generously dipped in makjang, wrapped with perilla leaf, wrap vegetables, and garlic, or made into sushi-style bites with rice. The varied basic side dishes—quail eggs, japchae, corn cheese, pancakes, and wrap vegetables—were followed by warm complimentary fried food just as we nearly finished the sashimi, making the whole table highly satisfying.

Some sashimi restaurants near Pukyong National University now focus on the fish itself and keep the side dishes simple, but this one had the enjoyable, ongoing abundance of a more traditional sashimi restaurant. Its fairly large space works for a casual drink for two or for groups ordering assorted sashimi or seafood sets. If you want seasonal fish and soju near Kyungsung or Pukyong National University, or want plentiful side dishes too, this is certainly somewhere worth revisiting. Especially during gizzard shad season, I recommend ordering a plate and giving it a deep dip in makjang.
