## In short

Janghoga Yang Kkochi is a lamb skewer restaurant in Nam-gu, Busan. After sashimi, I grilled lamb skewers (8 for ₩13,500) and spicy chicken wings, with Tsingtao mixed with Yantai Gaoliang. Verdict: a satisfying second-round drinks-and-grill combination.

That day, I came out after having sashimi at a nearby restaurant for the first round, and it felt a little disappointing to head straight home. I was reasonably full, so rather than another heavy meal, I wanted something I could slowly pick at with another drink. Lamb skewers came to mind nearby, so I visited Janghoga Yang Kkochi (장호가양꼬치). Sashimi followed immediately by lamb skewers might sound like a slightly random combination, but it was actually pretty good for a second round. It was easier to grill and eat one skewer at a time than fatty samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly), and it went well with drinks such as Tsingtao or Yantai Gaoliang. I had gone in while looking for a good place in Daeyeon-dong, and in the end, I properly ordered both lamb skewers and spicy chicken wings and had a very satisfying second round.

## A lamb skewer spot in the Gyeongseong–Pukyong University district

Janghoga Yang Kkochi is tucked inside the Gyeongseong–Pukyong University commercial district, making it an easy-to-reach Daeyeon-dong restaurant by public transit. The area itself is packed with restaurants and bars, so it is well positioned for continuing on to a second round after dinner. The exterior has white walls with the name Janghoga Yang Kkochi written large in red, making it easy to spot from a distance. Red and yellow lighting typical of a Chinese restaurant glows above it, so the Chinese-restaurant atmosphere is unmistakable overall. If you are looking for lamb skewers near Gyeongseong University or Pukyong National University, it is not hard to find.

The interior was more spacious than expected, with quite a few tables. Each table has a dedicated grill in the center that automatically rotates the lamb skewers, with an exhaust duct hanging above. There were plenty of customers when I visited, ranging from tables of friends out for drinks to larger groups having a meal together. It is not an extravagantly decorated place; true to a lamb skewer restaurant, it has a relaxed atmosphere where you can sit, grill, and eat comfortably. The tables did not feel especially cramped, and with the grill set in the middle, it was good for two or three people to sit and share skewers. Personally, I think a little bustle suits a lamb skewer restaurant better than somewhere too quiet, and in that sense it was just right.

## From lamb skewers to full meal dishes

The menu was varied, centered on lamb skewers but also including grilled meats, Chinese-style dishes, and meal options. The signature lamb skewers came eight per serving for ₩13,500, and there were also skewers such as premium lamb ribs and spicy chicken wings. Grilled options included premium lamb ribs, lamb sirloin, and lamb belly, as well as sets for trying several kinds at once. The dish menu included Chinese-style options such as guobaorou (sweet-and-sour crispy pork), mapo tofu, and Beijing-style shredded pork, while meal choices such as corn noodles, cold corn noodles, and mapo tofu rice made for a good finish after lamb skewers.

Before the food arrived, simple banchan (side dishes) and a separate selection of seasonings for dipping the lamb skewers were set out. The seasoning plate was divided into several kinds, from spicy powder to cumin and salt-based seasonings, so it looked easy to dip according to your taste.

## Lamb skewers, spicy chicken wings, Yantai Gaoliang, and Tsingtao

I ordered lamb skewers and spicy chicken wings, with Yantai Gaoliang and Tsingtao to drink. Once the neatly lined-up lamb skewers and spicy chicken wings were laid out together, the table looked quite generous. With a green Tsingtao bottle and a clear bottle of Yantai Gaoliang on one side, it looked like we were really going to eat properly that day.

Rather than drinking Yantai Gaoliang straight that day, I tried mixing it with Tsingtao. Yantai Gaoliang has its characteristic fiery aroma and strength, but mixed with Tsingtao, it went down much more smoothly while the aroma of the baijiu still lingered subtly. The fragrance came alive more than when drinking beer alone, yet it did not hit the throat as hard as drinking baijiu by itself, so it went down more easily than expected.

## Grilling lamb skewers on an automatic grill

The fun of a lamb skewer restaurant is, of course, the grilling process itself. Place the raw skewers one by one into the grooves on the grill, and they rotate automatically as they cook. The lamb, bright red at first, turns golden from the outside as it takes on heat, and each time the fat between the meat melts and drips onto the charcoal below, the aroma rises sharply. I put the spicy chicken wings, already heavily coated in seasoning, on alongside them; even the sight of the red seasoning slightly charring in the heat was appetizing. With lamb skewers and chicken wings grilling side by side, nutty meat aromas rise from one side and spicy seasoning aromas from the other, making the wait quite torturous. Since the skewers turn automatically, it was convenient not to have to flip them one by one—just drink and watch them cook.

## Lamb skewers generously dipped in cumin, plus spicy chicken wings

The lamb skewers did not have a strong gaminess, and the meat itself was fairly tender, so I think even people trying lamb for the first time could eat them comfortably. With a good balance of fat and lean meat, they became nuttier the more I chewed; after grilling them golden over the fire and coating them generously in cumin or spicy seasoning, that distinctive exotic flavor really came alive. Personally, they were much better with a proper coating of seasoning rather than being stingy with it. The spicy chicken wings were far more intense than the lamb skewers. They were generously coated in spicy seasoning, which lightly charred over the charcoal and deepened the aroma, while the chicken inside stayed moist, giving a nice contrast in texture. At first, they did not seem that spicy, but after a few, the heat quietly built up—and that was exactly when a glass of Tsingtao hit the spot. Alternating between the clean-tasting lamb skewers and punchy chicken wings, each had a clearly different role, and I was glad I ordered them together.

> then Tsingtao mixed with Yantai Gaoliang.

Janghoga Yang Kkochi was the kind of Daeyeon-dong restaurant that comes to mind when you want lamb skewers and a drink near Gyeongseong University or Pukyong National University. The lamb skewers were not strongly gamey and had just enough fat to be great with a generous dip in cumin, while the spicy chicken wings had a definite seasoning punch, making them a good pair to alternate between. In particular, putting the skewers on the automatically rotating grill and slowly cooking them was a different kind of fun from an ordinary Korean barbecue restaurant. Rather than drinking only Tsingtao that day, I also ordered Yantai Gaoliang and mixed the two; it went down more smoothly than expected while preserving the baijiu aroma, and it paired quite well with the lamb. Several banchan were served, and the seasonings could be selected and dipped according to preference, so there was no major shortcoming. Beyond lamb skewers, the variety runs from grilled lamb ribs and sirloin to guobaorou, mapo tofu, and corn noodles, so next time I would like to visit with several people and order a range of dishes too. Considering current dining-out meat prices, it did not feel excessively expensive, and the lamb skewers and spicy chicken wings alone were plenty as drinking food. If you are tired of having samgyeopsal or chicken every time near Gyeongseong and Pukyong universities, this is a Daeyeon-dong restaurant worth visiting for a change of pace. Especially for anyone who likes lamb skewers with Tsingtao, adding a little Yantai Gaoliang as I did that day is quite a fun choice.
