Lately, when I eat out, I somehow keep reaching for dishes that are spicy, salty, or greasy. They certainly taste good, but after a few days in a row, there comes a point when I start craving a lighter Korean meal. This was exactly one of those days. Rather than something as substantial as gukbap (rice soup), I was looking for a Jeonpo-dong restaurant where I could comfortably eat ingredients such as greens or fish, and that led me to Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch. Looking over the menu, I found gondre rice at its center, along with a range of rice bowls and side dishes. It was a slightly different lineup from the usual spicy pork or kimchi stew, so I was curious. I especially liked that grilled mackerel gondre rice could be paired with deodeok mushroom grill and Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi, so I decided to try a little of everything. It looked easy enough to walk into alone for a meal, but also like a good Jeonpo-dong restaurant for two people to add a few sides and make a full Korean spread.

## A tidy Korean restaurant in a Jeonpo-dong alley

Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch sits deeper inside one of Jeonpo-dong’s alleys. With plenty of cafés and restaurants nearby, it is in a great spot to continue on to a café after eating, and it was easy to find while taking in Jeonpo’s distinctive alley atmosphere. The exterior is very neat, centered on white walls, and the large Hyangtaek sign above catches the eye. Since you can see somewhat into the restaurant through the glass door, it felt easy to enter even as a first-time visitor. Photos of signature dishes are also displayed outside, giving you a rough idea of what the restaurant serves. Rather than the old, weighty exterior of a traditional Korean restaurant, it has the feel of a Korean restaurant tidied up for contemporary tastes, which suits the mood of Jeonpo-dong well.

The interior was as clean and calm as the exterior suggested. The wood-toned décor gave it a warm feel, while details like the circular latticework on the walls added a slight hanok (traditional Korean house) touch. Overall, it felt like a good place for a quiet meal, and I do not think dining alone would feel awkward at all.

## A menu from gondre rice to mulhoe

Seeing the menu in person, I found it much more varied than it had looked in my Naver search. At first, I thought it would have only a few kinds of gondre rice, but there was even a summer-limited pollock yukhoe mulhoe (cold raw-fish soup with seasoned raw beef), plus quite a few rice bowls, noodle dishes, and sides. The rice dishes included grilled mackerel gondre rice, eggplant-based rice bowls, yukhoe bibimbap (mixed rice with seasoned raw beef), and dishes with squid. For sides, there were Korean dishes that pair well with rice, including deodeok mushroom grill and Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi. Mulhoe and chicken bulgogi in particular were items I had not properly noticed while searching, so the menu made me hesitate a little. Main dishes were in the low-to-mid ₩10,000 range, while most sides were around ₩10,000, which seemed suitable for ordering one main alone or adding one or two sides when visiting as a pair.

While you wait after ordering, a light broth, gim (roasted seaweed), pickles, and soy sauce generously filled with chives arrive as the basics. The banchan (Korean side dishes) are not flashy or numerous, but they felt neatly chosen to eat with the mains. The chive soy sauce was especially memorable. At most gondre rice restaurants, plain seasoned soy sauce is common, but this one had finely chopped chives and sesame seeds, so its aroma really came through.

## A three-dish spread of gondre rice and sides

I ordered grilled mackerel gondre rice as my main, then added deodeok mushroom grill and Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi as sides. Once everything arrived, the colors alone made it feel like a proper Korean table spread. The grilled mackerel gondre rice came in a large bowl with a generous layer of gondre greens, topped with a sizable piece of golden-brown grilled mackerel. Sesame seeds and scallions made it look very neatly presented too. The Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi was grilled across almost the whole plate, its browned exterior looking quite appetizing. The deodeok mushroom grill was stir-fried with mushrooms and deodeok in a spicy sauce, and its red seasoning made it look like the boldest of the three. On a day when one dish feels like too little at a Jeonpo-dong restaurant, it is nice to add sides like these and build your own spread.

## Grilled mackerel gondre rice with chive soy sauce and gim

The grilled mackerel gondre rice was very mild when I first ate it as it came. The distinctive aroma of gondre came through gently, while the mackerel was golden and nutty outside, with soft flesh within. Because it is not a dish with strong seasoning, the first few spoonfuls may feel plainer than expected. But once the chive soy sauce that comes with it enters the picture, the flavor really comes alive. Break up and mix the rice, gondre, and mackerel, then add the chive soy sauce little by little, and the seasoning falls into place as the rich nuttiness of the mackerel naturally blends with the aroma of the greens. Personally, I thought it was best with gim too. Put some well-mixed gondre rice on a sheet of gim, add just a touch more chive soy sauce, and take a bite—it is simple, but you keep reaching for it. It is even better with a piece of mackerel on top. It is not a flashy flavor, but I found my rice bowl quietly emptying fast.

## Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi with an unusual bite

The Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi had the most interesting texture of everything I ate that day. It felt very soft at first bite, so I wondered if it might be like an ordinary chicken patty, but as you chew, there is an occasional crisp, springy bite. It did not feel quite like ground chicken simply pressed into a soft shape, so the texture had a lot of character. Its exterior was nicely browned, and the seasoning was not too strong, so it did not overpower the grilled mackerel gondre rice when eaten together. Since the rice was mild, adding a piece of chicken bulgogi at a time naturally gave it more seasoning, and the pairing worked well. I ordered it because it was unfamiliar and I was curious, but in the end I was glad I added it. If you want a slightly different meat side from the usual spicy pork or bulgogi at a Jeonpo-dong restaurant, it is a good choice.

## Deodeok mushroom grill that lets the ingredients show

The deodeok mushroom grill looked as though its red seasoning would be quite intense, but it was not as strongly seasoned as I expected. The spicy sauce had lightly soaked into the surface, but not enough to cover the slightly bitter fragrance of the deodeok or the flavor of the mushrooms themselves. The deodeok’s distinctive aroma and fibrous texture became more pronounced as I chewed, while the mushrooms were moist from holding just the right amount of sauce. On rice, it did a fine job as a side dish that filled in the missing seasoning; picked at between bites of mackerel or chicken bulgogi, it also changed the direction of the meal nicely. Rather than using a bold sauce that makes every ingredient taste the same, it leaves room for each ingredient’s natural flavor. That suited Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch’s approach to food well. This mild combination would make it easy to come here for a solo meal too.

> A Korean restaurant you keep reaching for without overpowering flavors.

Hyangtaek Jeonpo Branch was a Jeonpo-dong restaurant that reminded me that, after getting rather used to bold food lately, a mild meal like this can be very good too. I had initially visited just to have the grilled mackerel gondre rice lightly, but the actual menu had more variety than my search had suggested, so I ordered the Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi and deodeok mushroom grill as well. In the end, the three-dish combination worked very well. The grilled mackerel gondre rice was best after mixing the gondre and mackerel well, adding chive soy sauce, and wrapping it in gim. The Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi was soft at first, then revealed its crisp, springy texture the more I chewed, which made it quite distinctive. Despite its red appearance, the deodeok mushroom grill did not cover up the ingredients with sauce, so I could fully enjoy the deodeok’s aroma and the mushrooms’ texture. None of the dishes hits you with a strong flavor from the first bite. But that was precisely why my stomach did not feel weighed down afterward, and I could eat comfortably without tiring of it to the end. Jeonpo has so many strongly flavored choices, from pasta and meat to spicy food, but sometimes it is nice to settle a meal cleanly with greens, fish, and grilled dishes like this. The restaurant itself is also neat, and eating alone would not feel awkward, so I would happily return when I want Korean food by myself. If you are looking in Jeonpo for Korean food that is not overpowering but never bland, this is a Jeonpo-dong restaurant worth remembering.
