As fall settles in and the weather turns cool, it's the perfect season for a drive anywhere. I hadn't been to Tongdosa in Yangsan in a while, so I stopped by for some fresh air and quiet scenery — and stumbled onto a seriously good rice-thief of a restaurant along the way.

For me, the most important part of any trip or outing is finding a proper meal at a good restaurant, and I found a great one at Deodo Gejang, a specialty spot for Jeju yellow crab jang (crab marinated in soy or spicy sauce) and assorted jang. From the moment the food was set down — a table absolutely packed — to the last bite, it was a fully satisfying meal. Deodo Gejang near Tongdosa in Yangsan is a Jeju yellow crab jang and assorted jang specialty restaurant with branches in Yangsan and Busan Haeundae. There's a large dedicated parking lot right in front of the restaurant, so parking is easy.

I visited on a weekend afternoon just after the lunch peak, but it was still busy. Since the restaurant runs with no break time, it's convenient to drop by any time of day.

Another great thing about Deodo Gejang is how neat and generous the side dishes are — every bit as good as the main assorted jang. There's a bubbling, savory crab doenjang (soybean paste) stew, grilled fish topped with a tangy sauce, beef bulgogi in a hot stone pot, and tidy servings of seasoned greens, seaweed, and cucumber salad — sides good enough to finish a whole bowl of rice on their own.

Wanting to try a variety of jang, we ordered the signature assorted jang nutrition pot rice set for two. When the huge brass bowl landed on the table, our jaws dropped — what a sight!

### Flower crab jang, yellow crab soy jang and spicy yellow crab jang

The crab was packed with meat and topped with a spicy pepper garnish, mouthwatering just to look at. Every bite was so full of meat it was deeply satisfying. Best of all, the soy sauce marinade wasn't too salty — clean-tasting enough that a whole bowl of rice disappeared in no time alongside it.

### Octopus jang, abalone jang and soy-marinated peeled shrimp jang

Chewy whole octopus, premium abalone, and plump peeled shrimp already cleaned for easy eating — all in one spread. Getting to enjoy so many varieties together was great.

The soy marinade wasn't too salty, with a subtle sweetness and deep savoriness that kept us coming back for more without getting tired of it. The spicy marinated crab was just as good, with the crab's natural sweetness meeting a spicy kick that really woke up the appetite.

## Crab-shell bibimbap, the real rice thief at Deodo Gejang

The real highlight of any crab jang has to be mixing rice into the shell, right? Scooping freshly cooked warm rice into a crab shell loaded with rich roe and mixing it all together — that's a true rice thief moment.

The chewy octopus, plump easy-to-eat shrimp, and abalone each kept their own distinct texture, which made picking through everything genuinely fun.

## Finishing with nutrition pot rice and nurungji tea

Instead of plain rice, you get a nutty pot rice with sweet pumpkin and beans, which you can scoop out and enjoy with the jang. At the end, they pour hot water into the pot to make a savory nurungji (scorched rice) tea. Sipping that warm tea makes for a comfortable, satisfying way to end the meal.

From the quality of the main seafood jang to every single side dish, you can feel the care put into this meal, which made the whole experience a pleasure. The restaurant is clean and the food lineup is excellent, so I'm already thinking of bringing my parents next time. Highly recommended as a hearty meal to bookend a trip to Tongdosa!
