## In short

Bapkkot Hansang is a course-style hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal) restaurant on Doum8-ro in Sejong, close to Sejong Arboretum and Sejong Lake Park. On a family outing with a child, the writer booked ahead, parked in the building's underground garage and ordered the Bapkkot Special for two, which came out course by course from salad and perilla cream noodles to vegetable pancake, herbal medicinal pork, tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties) and gangdoenjang (thick soybean paste stew). Bapkkot Hansang gets long waits, so a reservation means sitting down and eating right away.

Found a solid spot for when you want a proper full Korean spread after a trip to Sejong Arboretum or Sejong Lake Park. This time it was Bapkkot Hansang!

I've been going to Sejong pretty often lately and slowly checking off Sejong restaurants, and Bapkkot Hansang serves everything neatly, one course at a time, which makes it good for treating someone to a meal or for an important gathering. It's especially close to Sejong Arboretum and Sejong Lake Park, so it's a great spot to eat before or after a walk there. So if you're looking for restaurants near Sejong Arboretum or Sejong Lake Park, this one's worth keeping in mind. We booked ahead, and that turned out to be the right call.

## Parking and waits at Bapkkot Hansang: book ahead and walk straight in

Bapkkot Hansang has parking in the basement of the building, so it was easy to visit by car — we parked, went up to the 3rd floor, and could eat right away. But once we got in, quite a few people were already waiting. Guess that's what makes a Sejong restaurant a real one, haha.

Since we'd booked ahead, we didn't have to wait at all and got seated right away — if you're planning to go, I'd really recommend reserving. The signature menus are the Bapkkot Signature Set and the Bapkkot Special Set, and we ordered the Bapkkot Special for two. Each table has a tablet so you can browse the menu and order easily, and they were also running a promotion where you get a free tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) for leaving a Naver receipt review!

## What comes out, in what order, in the Bapkkot Special Course for two

The Bapkkot Special comes out course by course like a proper tasting menu, and it was fun watching the table fill up dish by dish from the start.

First came a salad with a refreshing dressing that really woke up the appetite.

Then came perilla cream noodles made with buckwheat noodles — I expected the perilla cream to be heavy, but it was nuttier and lighter than expected, and really tasty. The vegetable pancake also came out, and it was genuinely crispy! A pancake's got to be crispy, right, haha. The outside was fried crisp, so eating it warm was great.

### Herbal medicinal pork and tteokbokki

One of my personal favorites was the herbal medicinal pork (hanbang suyuk). The pork was soft, clean, with no gamey smell, so I kept reaching for it. Everything else served alongside was good too, and the tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) was surprisingly tasty, haha. Having tteokbokki in a Korean course felt a little unusual, but it was good, so I cleaned it up.

Japchae (glass noodle stir-fry) and tofu kimchi also came out, and the tofu kimchi was delicious too. And the kimchi — genuinely amazing, haha.

As the dishes kept coming one by one, at some point the table was completely full. It really filled up the whole spread, and there was fun in picking and choosing what to eat. More than anything, the food overall felt healthy and fresh rather than heavily seasoned, and having so many dishes laid out at once made it feel like a proper full Korean spread. There are plenty of good Sejong restaurants out there, but a place where you get to eat a little of many different things has its own kind of charm.

## Tteokgalbi and gangdoenjang: the dishes that worked best with a child

Next came the tteokgalbi and gangdoenjang (thick doenjang stew). The tteokgalbi came as two hefty patties, and it was genuinely delicious. My kid ate it up too, haha. When eating out with a kid, whether there's something they can actually eat matters a lot, and since the tteokgalbi was thick and soft, it worked well for us to share.

Then I mixed the gangdoenjang into my rice, and that combo was great too. Piling the seasonal namul (seasoned vegetable) side dishes served alongside onto the doenjang-mixed rice made a whole bowl disappear in no time, haha. The candied nuts and bangpung namul (glehnia root greens) in particular were amazing. The namul itself was fresh and seasoned just right, so mixing rice with the gangdoenjang and topping it with a different namul each time kept me eating. This is exactly the charm of Korean food, right, haha. I went looking for a restaurant near Sejong Arboretum and ended up here, and since every dish came out so neatly and in such variety, it was a meal I could enjoy slowly.

## Is Bapkkot Hansang a good place to take your parents?

Bapkkot Hansang is also worth searching for alongside restaurants near Sejong Lake Park, so it should be a good option for anyone taking a walk there or visiting Sejong Arboretum and looking for a place to eat afterward. It especially seemed like a good spot to bring parents. The food comes out course by course and the whole spread feels clean and neat, so it'd work well for treating someone to a meal. It made me think about bringing my parents here next time they come up to Daejeon.

Usually we just grab something simple when eating out with the kids, but every so often it's nice to have a full spread where every dish is properly plated like this. We had the Bapkkot Special for two, and with so many kinds of dishes we got to enjoy a bit of everything and ended up satisfyingly full. Best of all, having booked ahead meant we didn't have to wait to get in. Seeing how many people were waiting, it's clearly a popular spot, haha.

If you're searching for Sejong restaurants along with places near Sejong Arboretum or Sejong Lake Park, I'd recommend giving Bapkkot Hansang a try. It worked well for visiting with a kid, and it also seems like it'd suit a meal with parents, an important gathering, or treating someone to dinner. Next time I'd like to bring my parents and try the Bapkkot Signature Set too :) This is the kind of place that comes to mind when you want a proper Korean spread in Sejong.
