## In short

Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa One Grove Branch is an eel restaurant on the first floor of Building A at One Grove in Magok, Gangseo, Seoul. The writer ordered both the hitsumabushi and the lunch special hitsumabushi set, splitting them into plain, topped, and ochazuke portions and comparing the extra 2-piece umaki that only comes with the set. The wasabi-only style stood out as the most memorable way to eat it at Kikukawa.

I had a lunch planned in Magok One Grove, so I decided to try something a bit special this time. I'm usually a fan of eel, so I went to eat hitsumabushi (grilled eel rice bowl). The place I visited was Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa One Grove Branch.

I visited as part of a sponsored campaign this time, and ordered both the hitsumabushi and the lunch special hitsumabushi set to try them out myself.

## An easy spot to meet inside One Grove

Since it's located inside One Grove, it was convenient when I had a meal appointment there. Especially when making plans around Magok, you end up thinking not just about the restaurant itself but whether it's easy for everyone to meet nearby — and being able to handle the whole meal inside One Grove felt really convenient.

![Interior of Kikukawa in wood and green tones](https://img.superchart.com/images/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set-04-q7i3o-900.webp)

### What was the atmosphere like inside?

Walking in, I first took in the overall atmosphere — the place had a sleek, clean, upscale feel. The wood and green tones worked really well together. You might expect an eel restaurant to feel a bit heavy or old-fashioned, but Kikukawa had a totally different vibe, which made a strong first impression.

When you're having a meal on a date, it's not just about the food but also whether you can chat comfortably while eating, right? With that in mind, I paid attention to the atmosphere too — there are private rooms as well, so if you want a quiet meal or have an important gathering, it seems worth booking ahead.

## Ordering the hitsumabushi and the lunch special hitsumabushi set

![Kikukawa hitsumabushi menu board](https://img.superchart.com/images/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set-05-5kpro-900.webp)

After sitting down and looking over the menu, I ordered two items this time: the hitsumabushi and the lunch special hitsumabushi set.

![Table setting with hitsumabushi and lunch special set](https://img.superchart.com/images/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set-06-1r9yn-900.webp)

What's fun about hitsumabushi is that it's not just eel and rice eaten together — you can enjoy it in several different ways. Since I ordered both menu items together this time, I took a good look at the overall spread once the food arrived.

![Close-up of grilled eel over rice in hitsumabushi](https://img.superchart.com/images/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set-07-juatq-897.webp)

Even in photos, the eel on top looked pretty appetizing. The skin looked crisp and the flesh plump, so I wanted to dig in the moment it arrived.

## How to eat hitsumabushi — split it up like this

![How to eat hitsumabushi with the toppings laid out](https://img.superchart.com/images/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set-08-94h47-900.webp)

If you're trying hitsumabushi for the first time, you might wonder how to eat it. Usually you split it into quarters and enjoy it plain, then with toppings, then as ochazuke (rice with broth poured over), and finally however you liked best.

- 1/4 plain, just eel and rice
- 1/4 with the prepared toppings
- 1/4 as ochazuke, with broth added
- The last 1/4 however you liked best

I tried it split up in several different ways too.

![Eel and rice eaten plain in a small bowl](https://img.superchart.com/images/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set-10-1elbz-900.webp)

First I ate the eel and rice plain, then tried it with the prepared toppings. And at the end, I added broth to enjoy it ochazuke-style.

![A bowl of hitsumabushi topped with garnishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set-11-62wp0-900.webp)

![Eel rice bowl topped with wasabi](https://img.superchart.com/images/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set-12-1kn3j-900.webp)

![Eel ochazuke with broth poured over rice](https://img.superchart.com/images/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set-13-19pqj-900.webp)

Even with the same eel and rice, the feel changes depending on what you add, so it was more fun comparing different ways than sticking to just one. Among them, eating it with just a bit of wasabi stood out the most to me. I usually like ochazuke best, but at Kikukawa, adding just a touch of wasabi was actually the tastiest for me.

It's interesting how, even with the same hitsumabushi, the best-tasting point can differ a little from restaurant to restaurant.

## Lunch special hitsumabushi set — how is it different from the regular dish?

This time I also ordered the lunch special hitsumabushi set. When visiting during lunch hours, you naturally start paying attention to the set options as well as the à la carte menu.

Eating both together let me compare the differences between them. One difference between the hitsumabushi and the lunch special hitsumabushi set was that the set came with 2 pieces of umaki, an eel-filled rolled omelette.

![2 pieces of eel omelette umaki included in the lunch special set](https://img.superchart.com/images/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set-14-1gb7s-900.webp)

Having the soft, fluffy omelette alongside the eel made the whole spread feel a bit more substantial.

![Shared umaki and hitsumabushi set](https://img.superchart.com/images/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set-15-ovyai-900.webp)

I thought it would be a good idea for a group to order different dishes and share, especially with several people. We split the umaki pieces evenly between us.

## What stood out to me after eating it myself

What mattered most in this meal was, of course, the taste and texture of the eel. Eel can be a love-it-or-hate-it food depending on the level of seasoning or texture you prefer, so it's best to try it yourself and see if it suits your taste.

![Eel rice bowl with sauce and sansho pepper added](https://img.superchart.com/images/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set/one-grove-unagi-lunch-hitsumabushi-set-16-1rcc7-900.webp)

I had fun this time noticing the differences between the various ways of eating hitsumabushi. And when the seasoning felt a bit mild, I could add the sauce and sansho pepper provided on the side to suit my taste. I added a bit more sauce myself, letting it soak into the rice along with the eel, which gave it a whole different flavor I really enjoyed. Being able to eat it plain first and then adjust with sauce or sansho pepper to taste was another nice touch.

## Looking for eel in One Grove?

If you're looking for a place to eat in Magok One Grove and thinking about eel, this visit might be worth referencing. If you go with someone who loves eel, splitting the hitsumabushi different ways is fun, and if you're planning a lunch, the lunch special menu is worth checking out too. And when it comes to eating on a date, it's not just about the food but the time spent together that matters. Since you can enjoy the meal in a clean, stylish atmosphere, this could be a good reference if you're looking for a One Grove eel date spot.

This time I tried the hitsumabushi and the lunch special hitsumabushi set at Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa One Grove Branch. If you usually like eel or have been wanting to properly try hitsumabushi, splitting it up different ways is worth doing. For me too, this visit let me enjoy eel in a slightly different way than usual, making it a memorable lunch.

The road can be a bit confusing, so just make sure to find Building A!!
