I've been wanting to pick up a new hobby lately, so this time I tried a wax carving one-day class at Munak in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul!

What I made this time was a ring. It was my first time trying wax carving, so at first I wasn't sure if I could actually shape it the way I wanted — but once I got started, it turned out to be way more fun than I expected, haha.

## Why the workshop is named Munak

Also, the name of the workshop, Munak, was kind of cute. Apparently it's a phonetic spelling of "munhak" (문학, literature). I was curious how they came up with a name like that, and hearing the story made me like it even more. Doesn't the name itself feel a little literary and sentimental, haha?

## Can a total beginner carve a wax ring at Munak?

Wax carving is the process of carving a block of wax by hand into the shape you want. I decided to make a ring at Munak this time. At first, looking at the wax block, I thought, "how is this ever going to become a ring?" haha, but as the teacher explained each step, the shape started coming together bit by bit.

Above all, the teacher was really kind. Since it was my first time, I got confused at certain points, but she patiently walked me through it each time, so I could work comfortably. And I ended up focusing way more than I expected.

Carve a little, check the shape, carve again... repeating that, at some point I realized I wasn't thinking about anything else at all. That kind of focus makes it a great hobby, honestly. I'm the type who, once I start making something, thinks "since I'm doing this, I might as well make it pretty!" — so I started getting more and more ambitious, haha.

## What makes wax carving appealing: freedom to shape any design

What made wax carving especially fun was how much freedom it allows. Instead of just recreating a set shape, you can carve whatever form you want, which kept making me want to try different things as I worked.

The process of making the ring was more fun than I expected, too. It started out as just a round piece of wax, and as I gradually shaped it, it actually started to look like a real ring. That process was oddly fascinating.

Watching something I carved with my own hands turn into an actual ring, piece by piece, was really satisfying to see come together. And once it was finished, I felt way more attached to it than at the start. A ring you just buy and a ring you make yourself really do feel different.

Honestly, I was a little surprised at how much fun wax carving turned out to be, since this was my first time trying it, haha. I figured, since it's a one-day class, I'd just try it once and that would be it. But once I actually did it, I found myself thinking, if they had a hobby course, I'd want to keep going, haha.

Because wax carving allows so much freedom, making one ring doesn't feel like the end — it makes you want to try making something else next. I kept thinking this would be fun to make, or I want to try that too... It feels like you could make anything, which makes me greedy for more, haha.

This would suit people like me who enjoy making things by hand, or anyone looking for a slightly different kind of hobby. If you enjoy the process of building something step by step, rather than just receiving a finished piece, you'll probably enjoy this even more.

## How much the Munak wax carving class costs

The price is normally ₩108,000, but it's currently discounted to ₩98,000 through September. I made a quilted-pattern ring this time, but if I go again, I'd love to try a different design. Wax carving felt a little unfamiliar to me at first, but after actually trying it, I get why some people learn it as a hobby!!

And personally, I really hope Munak opens a hobby course someday, haha. Just trying it once as a one-day class was already fun — I think it would be even more fun to keep learning and gradually make the things I actually want.

If you're looking for a one-day class that's a bit different from the usual in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, or if you want a ring you made yourself, Munak's wax carving class is worth trying. I was pretty satisfied just discovering wax carving as a new hobby through this experience, and I'm already curious what I'll make next, haha.
