## In short

Izawa Sangam is a gyukatsu restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, serving breaded beef cutlets and Japanese dishes. My husband and I had the gyukatsu double and cold soba for a late weekday lunch, and the tender meat with chilled noodles was an especially good pairing. Verdict: a place I’d happily revisit when I’m craving gyukatsu in Sangam.

Recently, my husband and I went to Izawa Sangam, a popular gyukatsu spot in Sangam, for a late weekday lunch.

> Izawa Sangam

I usually love gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet), so I go out for it from time to time, and Izawa Sangam was one of the most memorable places I’ve had it recently. The atmosphere was comfortable and unfussy too, so it seemed like a good option for dining alone or for an office-worker lunch in Sangam.

## Izawa Sangam location and parking

Izawa Sangam, a gyukatsu specialty restaurant that is great for lunch in Sangam, is located in Sangam-dong, making it a convenient spot for nearby office workers to visit for lunch.

There is no separate dedicated parking lot, so you’ll need to use a nearby public parking lot. Sangam-dong Public Parking Lot is close by, so if you’re driving, I recommend checking where to park before you go.

## A neat Japanese restaurant-style exterior

Izawa Sangam has a brown awning with its IZAWA name written alongside Japanese lettering, so it was easy to spot even from a distance. There were menu and gyukatsu notices by the entrance too, so I could quickly see what they sold before heading in.

## An interior suited to solo dining and a casual meal

It felt nice for dining alone or having a light meal as a pair. Inside was a compact, comfortable space centered around warm wood tones.

There are tables by the windows and counter-style seats in front of the kitchen, so it didn’t feel awkward to come alone for a meal. It had a casual atmosphere where you could comfortably drop in for a bite.

## What else is on the menu besides gyukatsu?

![Izawa Sangam gyukatsu menu guide](https://img.superchart.com/images/sangam-izawa-gyukatsu-naengmilmyeon/sangam-izawa-gyukatsu-naengmilmyeon-05-xuje9-900.webp)

Gyukatsu is the signature item. It is made by frying aged beef sirloin, then grilling it a little more at the table to your preference. Along with gyukatsu, there are various dishes including steak set meals, steak rice bowls, and basil ramen.

### What we ordered

- Gyukatsu double
- Cold soba

Since I love meat, I personally thought the gyukatsu double was a pretty good choice.

## A gyukatsu double served in two full rows

![Gyukatsu double set served with a tabletop grill](https://img.superchart.com/images/sangam-izawa-gyukatsu-naengmilmyeon/sangam-izawa-gyukatsu-naengmilmyeon-06-yvuvg-900.webp)

True to its name, the gyukatsu double came with a generous two rows of cutlets. It was served with rice, soup, cabbage salad, sauce, and accompaniments, plus a small grill for cooking the gyukatsu.

It had a thin, crisp coating on the outside and moist meat inside. Compared with gyukatsu I’ve had elsewhere, it seemed to arrive a little more cooked rather than very rare. It was cooked enough to eat as it was, but I tried grilling it just a little more on the tabletop grill.

The heat was neither too strong nor too weak, so I could slowly bring it to the doneness I wanted. The meat did not stick badly to the grill, either, making it easy to turn it over and cook it nicely. Since it already arrived suitably cooked, I only needed to sear the surface a little more before eating it right away.

What I liked most was the texture of the meat. Gyukatsu can sometimes be tough or have sinew that you notice while chewing, but the gyukatsu I had that day was tender, with no sinew to chew through. The contrast of the crisp coating and moist meat was lovely too, and it was personally one of the gyukatsu meals that has stayed with me lately.

### Add sauce and wasabi to suit your taste

It was good on its own, but the accompanying sauce and wasabi let me enjoy slightly different flavors. Personally, I liked placing the gyukatsu over rice with a little wasabi.

The wasabi balanced the rich, nutty flavor of the meat now and then, so even though it was a double portion, it never became overly heavy. The gyukatsu itself was not excessively seasoned, making it nice to pair with different accompaniments as you like.

## Cold soba that paired well with the gyukatsu

The cold soba I ordered with the gyukatsu was also a dish I liked more than expected. The noodles came divided into two portions, with chilled soba broth, wasabi, and radish.

The noodles were not packed into one stiff clump; they loosened nicely and softly when I picked them up with chopsticks. I dipped small portions into the soba broth and added radish and wasabi little by little to taste.

Rather than being overly salty or intense, the broth had a lightly sweet and refreshing taste. After a few pieces of warm, savory gyukatsu, a bite of cold soba cleared my palate, so the two dishes went together really well. If ordering gyukatsu alone feels like it might be a little lacking, I’d recommend cold soba as a side dish too.

## A gyukatsu lunch in Sangam I’d return for

Izawa Sangam was the gyukatsu spot my husband and I visited for a late weekday lunch. Above all, the gyukatsu meat was tender rather than tough, and adding refreshing cold soba along the way meant we could enjoy the meal without getting tired of it until the end.

With both counter seating and tables, it felt good for visiting as a pair, as well as for a solo meal or an office-worker lunch in Sangam. It’s somewhere I’d like to visit again when I’m craving gyukatsu in Sangam :)
