## In short

Dambaek Jujeom is a Korean pub in an alley near Sangsu Station in Mapo, Seoul. Over dinner the writer ordered one serving of pork belly suyuk (steamed pork, 16,000 won) and one serving of pork jowl suyuk (18,000 won) to taste both side by side, then finished the meal by cooking kalguksu noodles in the soybean-paste broth hidden under the meat. Dambaek Jujeom works equally well for a date or a group when you want bossam and a drink around Sangsu or Hapjeong.

## Where is Dambaek Jujeom near Sangsu Station?

Dambaek Jujeom is a Korean-style bar (hoejumjib) tucked in an alley near Sangsu Station. You can spot the big sign right from the ground floor, then head up the stairs to the restaurant. There are so many hidden cafés and bars in the alleys between Sangsu and Hapjeong that it's genuinely fun to go hunting for them one by one haha. I heard there was a Korean pub with a nice atmosphere, so I went to check it out.

There's a little phrase about sincerity, honesty, and humility on the stairs going up, which made me trust the place even more haha.

## Seating and atmosphere inside Dambaek Jujeom

The inside of Dambaek Jujeom is pretty spacious and comfortable! There's a good variety of seating, from 2-person tables to 4-person tables hahaha.

There are also 6-person tables, so it looks like a good spot for year-end parties or birthday gatherings!

Besides soju and beer, they also have traditional Korean liquors!

## Dambaek Jujeom menu, prices and the lunch discount

Dambaek Jujeom also has a separate lunch menu where both the pork belly and pork jowl suyuk get a ₩2,000 discount. Sounds like a great place to visit for lunch too 👍🏻

We visited in the evening and ordered one pork belly suyuk (16,000) and one pork jowl suyuk (18,000). It was great that we could order them separately. Doesn't it feel like more of a win to have two dishes at once hoho. They also had a variety of side dishes and desserts, so it seemed like a good spot to order a bunch of things with a group! Since it's a Korean pub, the menu is mostly Korean-style dishes haha.

## Pork belly and pork jowl suyuk together: how did they taste?

The wrap vegetables and side dishes for the suyuk came out first. Side dishes really matter with suyuk, and I liked that none of them were too sweet. The salted shrimp next to the ssamjang paired really well too!

The main dish arrives!! Pork jowl on top, pork belly on the bottom. Underneath the meat is the kalguksu broth from the set menu, and simmering it lets you keep the meat warm for a long time. Suyuk isn't very good once it gets cold, right ㅠㅠ Everything's best before it cools down! But here you can keep it warm all the way until you eat the noodles. Try the chives at the bottom too as they cook along with everything else.

A delicious spread~~~~!!

Such an appetizing look! The portion is pretty generous too, so there's plenty to go around. The suyuk is moist and delicious~!

The radish salad and kimchi that came with it were also tasty, so I kept alternating between them to wrap the meat haha. The peppers had a bit of a kick too, which I liked even more haha. Wrapping a big bite of bossam (boiled pork wraps)~~~ so good

## Finishing with kalguksu noodles in the broth under the suyuk

When the dish first arrives, they also give you cabbage, scallions, mushrooms, and chives for the kalguksu. Why is this photo so out of focus... sorry about that 🥲 Once you've eaten some of the bossam, tell them you'd like the kalguksu and they'll bring the noodles over.

![Plate of cabbage, scallions, and mushrooms for the kalguksu](https://img.superchart.com/images/dambaek-jujeom-sangsu-pork-hotpot-kalguksu/dambaek-jujeom-sangsu-pork-hotpot-kalguksu-16-176ab-966.webp)

They lift the bossam off and move it to a plate, and then — ta-da — the broth appears underneath haha. It was pretty surprising the first time, kind of a plot twist lol. Since the broth reduces down a bit while you simmer it eating bossam, they bring you more broth too haha.

They add the vegetables and kalguksu noodles into that broth haha. A whole new dish begins~~ Let it bubble away! Hot soup as a drinking snack is just so good.

![Pot with vegetables and kalguksu noodles added to the broth](https://img.superchart.com/images/dambaek-jujeom-sangsu-pork-hotpot-kalguksu/dambaek-jujeom-sangsu-pork-hotpot-kalguksu-18-utz2k-966.webp)

![Soybean paste-based kalguksu simmering away](https://img.superchart.com/images/dambaek-jujeom-sangsu-pork-hotpot-kalguksu/dambaek-jujeom-sangsu-pork-hotpot-kalguksu-19-o67ch-966.webp)

Once the kalguksu noodles go in, the broth thickens up and pairs so well with the soybean paste base. Umami explosion!!! Eating it together with the bossam kimchi on the side is the best combo. Koreans really do need their carbs haha. The pairing of bossam and kalguksu was even better than I expected. Top marks for the set menu idea!

## Verdict: is Dambaek Jujeom worth it for bossam in Sangsu?

Since Dambaek Jujeom is a Korean-style pub, the interior has these little Korean touches scattered around, which made it feel perfect for a date too haha. It was a solid spot to drop by whenever you're craving bossam around Sangsu. The restroom is inside and clean! Next time I should go back for the spicy stir-fried octopus~! It seems like a great place for both dates and group gatherings around Sangsu or Hapjeong!
