## In short

Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch is a Chinese restaurant in Haeundae, Busan, on the 2nd floor above Subyeon Choego Pork Gukbap in the Haeundae The Sharp Adelisse commercial building. Visiting at sunset for two, the writer ordered jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles) topped with a poached egg, palbochae (mixed seafood and vegetable stir-fry) loaded with sea cucumber, abalone and shrimp, and a Tsingtao, praising the thick-cut meat in the noodles and the chewy seafood. Roomy enough for group gatherings yet relaxed enough for solo diners, it's a solid pick for Chinese food in Marine City.

## Finding Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch

A good spot for Chinese food in Marine City — I visited Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch, a Haeundae go-to. It's on the 2nd floor of the Haeundae The Sharp Adelisse commercial building. Just look for Suybeon Choego Pork Gukbap on the 1st floor and it's right above — easy to find.

The way up to the 2nd floor of Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch. Climb half a flight of stairs and there's an elevator. It's not that high up though, so I just took the stairs. From the entrance all the way to the elevator, everything is decorated with a 'kitchen' theme (bueokgan means kitchen).

## Inside the restaurant — room for groups and solo diners alike

The interior of Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch. Dark tones plus accent lighting give it an upscale feel.

The space is roomy, so it seems great for group gatherings too. When we were there, a big group had just finished up and left.

The interior at Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch is so pretty it almost feels like a café.

We came around sunset and caught a little glimpse of the ocean. I bet it looks even prettier in daylight.

## The menu — curious about the poached-egg jjajangmyeon

The menu at Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch. Unusually, they sell jjajangmyeon topped with a poached egg. Curious, I ordered the poached-egg jjajangmyeon plus palbochae. I'd considered yuringi too, but it wasn't on the menu. I got curious about the difference between yuringi and palbochae and asked ChatGPT — apparently yuringi is finely chopped ingredients, while palbochae uses whole ingredients (cut... bigger, I guess?). So aside from ingredient size, there's not much difference? Honestly I never could taste much difference between them either, hence the question. For drinks there's a range of gaoliang liquor and zero-sugar cola too.

The lighting combo looked pretty so I snapped a photo.

There were set menus too, all sorts of options prepared. But as we ate, we noticed plenty of people just ordering jjamppong or jjajangmyeon on their own, and even some solo diners. A place you can stop by for a simple meal without any pressure.

## Side dishes and the palbochae

The side dishes at Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch — the classic Chinese-restaurant jjachai and danmuji. Instead of plain water, they served something like jasmine tea, which paired nicely with the meal.

The palbochae at Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch. It was loaded with a variety of ingredients — squid, bell pepper, bok choy, sea cucumber, bamboo shoots, wood ear mushroom, abalone, shrimp, and more.

For me, palbochae beats yusanseul (finely diced vegetable stir-fry) — it has more chew and more flavor. The shrimp were big enough that we split them into a few pieces each.

And no Chinese meal is complete without a Tsingtao, so we ordered one~

## Poached-egg jjajangmyeon with big, hearty chunks of meat

The poached-egg jjajangmyeon at Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch. The cucumber wasn't the strongly-scented kind like garden cucumber — more like a zucchini, an aehobak-ish cucumber without much of that raw cucumber smell, just crisp, so it was delicious (though to be clear, I do like the strong-smelling kind too).

![Ganjajangmyeon topped with a poached egg and crisp cucumber garnish](https://img.superchart.com/images/marine-city-chinese-palbochae-sooran-jajang/marine-city-chinese-palbochae-sooran-jajang-14-q9lcp-1200.webp)

Overall the ganjajang sauce was tasty too. And the noodles were nice and thick, so the sauce clung well.

The poached egg, soft and cloud-like. I'd originally thought about dipping the noodles into the egg separately, but since we were sharing, we just mixed everything together at once. Maybe that's why the sauce turned out even softer?

Even though it's jjajangmyeon, the meat was cut into big, hearty chunks like this. Extra chew, extra flavor.

![Jjajang sauce showing large, hearty chunks of meat](https://img.superchart.com/images/marine-city-chinese-palbochae-sooran-jajang/marine-city-chinese-palbochae-sooran-jajang-16-i3o2d-966.webp)

Jjajang really does need meat in it. Usually the jjajangmyeon from Chinese restaurants has meat that's shredded to bits (?), which always left me a bit disappointed, but here you could actually taste and feel the meat, so I really enjoyed it. Recommending Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch as a Haeundae go-to, a Dongbaekseom-area favorite, and a Marine City must-visit~!
