## In short

Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho Main Branch is a restaurant specialising in pollock dishes in Doan-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon. Arriving just after the weekend lunch rush, the writer ordered the small spicy braised pollock in regular spiciness (30,000 won) with two bowls of rice, then wrapped the pollock, bean sprouts, dried radish greens and cheongyang chili in Wando rock laver (dolgim). The owner's own special sauce is what makes the dish, so Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho is worth recommending for a filling meal in Doan-dong.

> The sauce is the real main character

## What kind of restaurant is Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho in Doan-dong, Daejeon?

If you want spicy braised pollock (myeongtae jorim) to demolish a bowl of rice with, this is the place! Today I went looking for a good restaurant in Doan-dong, Daejeon, and ended up at Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho's Daejeon main branch.

I was looking for a place to have a hearty meal, and the menu ranged from spicy braised pollock to pork belly braised pollock to freshwater shrimp pollock stew — perfect if you love Korean food🖤

![Exterior and signboard of Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho Main Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock-03-jrsbe-900.webp)

As the name suggests, Myeongtaerang specializes in pollock dishes. The owner apparently spent years visiting famous pollock restaurants around the country to research and develop the current special sauce. Knowing the owner makes both the sauce and the food personally made me even more curious about the flagship spicy braised pollock.

Another menu item that caught my eye at Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho's Daejeon main branch was the seed hotteok nurungji (scorched rice)! Apparently it's a signature item first released on July 4, 2024, and the name alone tells you it's different from regular nurungji. I was curious how the spicy braised pollock sauce would pair with the seed hotteok nurungji.

## What is weekend lunch like at Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho?

Even though I arrived a bit past the weekend lunch rush, there were still plenty of customers, and what stood out was how many regulars there were. The customers skewed male, and rather than just eating and leaving, many tables were sitting in small groups sharing a drink or two🍶

Seeing drinks flowing naturally from weekend daytime gave me that real, tried-and-tested restaurant feeling. If local regulars come here to eat and drink together, doesn't that mean the menu has been thoroughly vetted?

## Menu and weekday lunch special prices at Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho

The signature dishes at this Doan-dong restaurant in Daejeon are spicy braised pollock, pork belly braised pollock, freshwater shrimp pollock stew, grilled mackerel, and one you can't skip — the seed hotteok nurungji🤎 It's a signature item, so I'd recommend ordering it alongside the braised pollock.

On weekdays, they also run a lunch special:

- Spicy braised pollock ₩12,000/person
- Pork belly braised pollock ₩16,000/person
- Freshwater shrimp pollock stew ₩11,000/person

If you visit on a weekday, the lunch special lets you enjoy the meal a bit more affordably. There were also sides like pork cutlet, udon noodles, ramen noodles, tofu and pollock roe, extra roe — nice options to pair with the braised pollock depending on your taste.

What I (Jjinyu) ordered today and the prices:

- Small spicy braised pollock, regular spiciness ₩30,000
- 2 bowls of rice ₩2,000

## Side dishes, the self-serve bar and Wando rock laver

First, the side dishes were laid out one by one. Usually when a lot of side dishes come out, there's at least one you barely touch, but here every single one was good. Most importantly, they paired really well with the main dish, the spicy braised pollock. Ready to eat🤍

![Full spread of side dishes at Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho](https://img.superchart.com/images/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock-11-85qmo-900.webp)

![Side dish plates served alongside the braised pollock](https://img.superchart.com/images/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock-12-12lu0-900.webp)

![Self-serve side dish bar at Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho](https://img.superchart.com/images/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock-13-8i5td-698.webp)

![Wando rock laver sold in the restaurant](https://img.superchart.com/images/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock-14-t6p9p-668.webp)

There was also a self-serve bar off to one side, so you could easily grab more of any side dish you ran out of. Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho apparently only uses dolgim (rock laver) produced in Wando, Jeollanam-do. They also sell the same laver used in-store separately, and quite a few customers were buying it to take home. Seeing that made me think again, 'this really is a place with a lot of regulars.' These small details gave off that genuine local-favorite feel of a Doan-dong restaurant.

## First look at the small spicy braised pollock, regular spiciness

Finally, the spicy braised pollock arrived🌶️🔥 Served on a big plate, it looked amazing — the glossy red sauce coated every bit of the pollock flesh, so the visuals alone were on point.

![Plate of glossy spicy braised pollock](https://img.superchart.com/images/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock-15-1pwii-1200.webp)

![Close-up of braised pollock loaded with sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock-16-1lc9n-900.webp)

Instead of being simmered bubbling at the table, it comes already deliciously braised, with the sauce clinging perfectly to the pollock. The rich, deep color of the sauce was so appetizing that I reached for rice the moment it arrived♥️ And a big plus — most of the large bones had already been removed!

![A deboned piece of pollock flesh](https://img.superchart.com/images/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock-17-1lfay-900.webp)

### How to eat the braised pollock: wrapping it in laver

Put a piece of pollock flesh on the laver!

![Pollock flesh placed on Wando rock laver](https://img.superchart.com/images/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock-19-4ckja-900.webp)

Dip bean sprouts or dried radish greens in the sauce and add them on top! Add one cheongyang chili!

![Braised pollock wrap topped with cheongyang chili](https://img.superchart.com/images/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-doan-braised-pollock-21-1lrkx-900.webp)

Ta-da! One bite, gone!

Here's how Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho, a Doan-dong restaurant in Daejeon, recommends eating the braised pollock — definitely try this: place a piece of pollock flesh on the Wando rock laver, lightly dip bean sprouts or dried radish greens in the special sauce and add them on, then top with a cheongyang chili and wrap it all up into a roll.

The moment I put it in my mouth, I understood exactly why they tell you to eat it this way🖤 The spicy special sauce blends perfectly with the pollock flesh, and the crunch of the bean sprouts, the savory taste of the dried radish greens, and the sharp kick of the cheongyang chili all come together to bring the flavor to life. The nutty, crispy taste of the rock laver especially went even better with the braised pollock than I expected.

## The real highlight: the owner's special sauce

Honestly, the real highlight was the special sauce. The owner of Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho apparently developed it after years of visiting famous pollock restaurants around the country to research — and after tasting it, I understood why they emphasize the sauce so much. It's not just spicy; it's rich in umami, and the more you coat the pollock in it, the more the flavor comes alive!

With braised pollock, the sauce is everything, and here the sauce itself was so good that I kept wanting to mix it into my rice. Wrapped in the laver, it was delicious; spooned over rice with pollock, also delicious. I really felt that while the pollock flesh here is good, this special sauce plays a major role in what makes it so good.

## Is Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho worth a visit?

Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho's Daejeon main branch in Doan-dong is a great spot to head for when you're craving spicy braised pollock. Their homemade special sauce really brings out the flavor of the braised pollock, and wrapping the pollock flesh, bean sprouts or dried radish greens, and cheongyang chili in laver was genuinely delicious.

From the side dishes to the main course, everything was satisfying, and seeing so many regulars even at weekend lunch confirmed the genuine local-favorite feel. Parking is available too, so I'd recommend it as a Doan-dong restaurant for a family meal out or a hearty meal. If you're curious about the spicy braised pollock and Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho's own special sauce, give it a visit☺️
