## In short

Cheonje Guksu is a noodle and suyuk (boiled pork) restaurant on Saeori-ro in Tanhyeon-myeon, Paju, Gyeonggi, near Heyri. Three adults shared a single serving of suyuk, bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles), doenjang guksu (soybean-paste noodle soup) and janchi guksu (banquet noodles) for about 30,000 won, and the doenjang guksu broth was a proper hangover cure after a heavy night. With a side-dish self-bar and floor seating, Cheonje Guksu is an easygoing neighborhood lunch spot.

Today I went to a hidden gem in Tanhyeon-myeon, Paju. It's not the easiest place to find, but it's right in front of a bus stop and has a proper parking lot out front, so it's worth stopping by whenever you're passing through. Three adults went and stuffed ourselves for about ₩30,000, so the value was amazing too — taste, price, and atmosphere all in one place. Here's my review of Cheonje Guksu.

## Countryside-style exterior and the Chuseok closure notice at Cheonje Guksu

The exterior of Cheonje Guksu has that cozy, countryside-restaurant feel — not flashy, but you can just tell it's a good place to eat.

This is a photo of the entrance. Please check the Chuseok holiday closure notice before visiting — they said they'd be closed on the 22nd and 23rd.

## Homemade tofu and the side-dish self-bar

Looks like Cheonje Guksu grows its own soybeans and makes its own tofu. They really know how to use beans well — I saw a lot of people ordering kongguksu (cold soybean noodle soup) too. There's also a side-dish self-bar, so you don't have to feel awkward flagging down staff!

## Floor seating in the dining hall, still busy at 1:30 p.m.

Even past 1:30pm, the hall was pretty full of customers — I was surprised. Looked like a lot of locals, and quite a few people bringing their parents. Since you can sit on the floor, it also seems like a good spot to bring young babies!

## Cheonje Guksu menu and prices

The prices are so good, right? Janchi guksu for ₩7,000, bibim guksu for ₩9,000, doenjang guksu for ₩11,000, ureong gangdoenjang bap for ₩12,000, and kongguksu for ₩10,000. On top of that, the side menu prices are gentle too, so you can order a bunch of things without worrying about the bill. The kimchi is homemade rather than store-bought, which made it taste even better, and I was surprised again to see that most of the main ingredients are domestically sourced.

Doenjang peppers, kimchi, and tofu — the tofu had that real handmade, nutty flavor, and it was great to nibble on piece by piece while waiting for the food.

Just looking at the appetizing side dishes made me think the main dishes here had to be something else. The doenjang peppers went really well with the suyuk. If reading this makes you want to visit, don't skip the single-serving suyuk!

## Suyuk (boiled pork) at 8,000 won: no gamey smell, not chewy

Cheonje Guksu's single-serving suyuk is ₩8,000 and comes with a pretty generous portion. Topping a piece of pork with the radish salad and a little salted shrimp, it was seriously delicious. There was no gamey smell at all, the texture was tender rather than chewy, and the spicy-tangy seasoning on the vegetables added just the right kick — a perfect combination.

It paired well with the janchi doenjang guksu too, but the best combination by far was bibim guksu with suyuk. That pairing can't possibly taste bad. Everyone reading this should try it!

## Bibim guksu at 9,000 won: what most customers order

Cheonje Guksu's bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles) is ₩9,000, and it looks delicious just by looking at it. The seasoning overall isn't too sour or too strong. It was a little disappointing that there was no egg, but honestly, it was so tasty that I forgot to even miss the egg haha.

![A bowl of Cheonje Guksu's bibim guksu](https://img.superchart.com/images/paju-heyri-doenjang-guksu-hangover-lunch/paju-heyri-doenjang-guksu-hangover-lunch-17-f0e60-900.webp)

![Mixing the bibim guksu](https://img.superchart.com/images/paju-heyri-doenjang-guksu-hangover-lunch/paju-heyri-doenjang-guksu-hangover-lunch-19-104r7-900.webp)

Actually, most of the customers eating there were having bibim guksu. Given how hot it's been, you can barely keep it together for lunch in this weather. That's when I'd recommend something light like this.

## Doenjang guksu as a hangover cure, with pork and sweet pumpkin

What I had was the ₩11,000 doenjang guksu, which comes with meat and sweet pumpkin — the broth tasted totally new to me, yet somehow familiar at the same time??? I'd been looking for something to cure my hangover after drinking too much the night before, and this really did the job. The portion is generous and the broth is rich, but the seasoning itself isn't too strong, so you can enjoy it comfortably without any stomach discomfort.

![Doenjang guksu with meat and sweet pumpkin](https://img.superchart.com/images/paju-heyri-doenjang-guksu-hangover-lunch/paju-heyri-doenjang-guksu-hangover-lunch-20-1oo76-900.webp)

Eating it bite by bite along with the side dishes that come with it, I looked up and my bowl was suddenly empty. I think this can be considered Cheonje Guksu's signature dish.

A tip: if you want it spicier, chopping up one or two cheongyang chili peppers and adding them would make it even better, I think. But since I'm not a fan of spicy food, I didn't request that myself haha.

## Janchi guksu at 7,000 won: a huge portion

The basic janchi guksu is ₩7,000. This one also isn't seasoned too strongly, and I hear people enjoy the mild, subtle flavor of janchi guksu.

![A bowl of ₩7,000 janchi guksu](https://img.superchart.com/images/paju-heyri-doenjang-guksu-hangover-lunch/paju-heyri-doenjang-guksu-hangover-lunch-23-sdeh9-867.webp)

There's pepper on the side if you feel like it needs more seasoning, but I'd recommend trying it as is first. The portion is huge, so I felt really satisfied getting all that for ₩7,000.
